Sarayu Velpula gets the YouTube Membership fund for the month of January 2022

by Sagar Shah - 26/05/2022

Sarayu Velpula is an example of how a tremendous talent's progress can be slowed down because of lack of funds. Born in 2006, the young girl from Warangal, Telangana is currently rated around 1900. However, her talent is massive and this is attested by the fact that she has won two national titles (under-11 and 13) and beaten many top Indian juniors like Divya Deshmukh, R. Vaishali, Varshini, Savitha Shri, Rakshitta and many more. In order to help her speed up her progress and give her more opportunities, Sarayu gets the January 2022 YouTube fund of Rs.55,853. We also have two donors who combined have contributed Rs.15,502 additionally, which brings the amount to Rs.71,355.

ChessBase India runs a YouTube channel which is frequented by millions of people. We have a membership program where all the money is spent to help one talented chess player in need of these funds each month. We began this initiative in December 2020 and towards the end of the article you will find all the links of the previous months where the YouTube membership funds have been utilized to help talents. The memberships on the channel are divided into 5 tiers:

The total amount comes to Rs.55,853 after YouTube's 30% deduction. All of this amount will go to Sarayu Velpula, the young talent from Telangana.

Sarayu Velpula, the two time National Champion

Sarayu Velpula winning the National under-13 title at Vizag in 2019

I like to call Sarayu - the girl who is always smiling. Meet her at any tournament and she will greet you with warmth and laughter. The youngster from Warangal, Telangana learnt chess from her father Sampath. Her father is a farmer and also a RMP doctor. Sarayu's mother Rajitha is a home-maker and she has a younger sister Sharanya. Taking care of the entire family and Sarayu's chess career has not been an easy task financially for Sampath. In spite of all the difficulties, Sarayu's love for chess has shone through. She has two national titles under her belt (under-11 and under-13) and she has beaten very strong players who have gone on to become the best in Indian chess like Vaishali, Divya, Savitha, Rakshitta and many others. Sarayu had also taken a break from her academics to fully focus on chess. Once when I interviewed her and asked her about her other hobbies apart from chess, all I could hear was silence for the next few seconds! The girl breathes, eats and lives chess!

Sarayu's family - sister Sharanya, mother Rajitha and father Sampath

Sarayu's first trainers were Sampath Bollam and V. Varun. They built up a strong foundation in her. Apart from building a strong foundation for her, they infused within her the love of the game. Now she is being trained by IM Ravi Teja and IM CRG Krishna. Speaking to them about Sarayu, IM CRG Krishna says, "Sarayu is an original talent. She has a natural instinct and intuition for the game. One of the few players I have seen who has a natural aggressive style of play. I feel if guided well and supported well financially, she can be a WGM in no time." IM Ravi Teja adds, "These days, it's very important that you play abroad events frequently to get your consistency going. This involves a lot of money. I always feel exposure is important for a chess player's career. If you play with the same players again and again, it doesn't help your career." CRG Krishna, Vinay Kumar Matta and Ravi Teja, on behalf of Project Knowledge Chess Academy have been working with Sarayu for the past 2-3 years. They don't charge any fees from her. "We just want her to achieve great heights," says CRG.

IM CRG Krishna, IM Ravi Teja and FM Vinay Kumar Matta with their Project Knowledge Chess Academy are ensuring that Sarayu remains on top of her game

Sarayu (left) drew her game against GM P. Karthikeyan at the ongoing KIIT GM International 2022. She is on 3.0/5 until now and gaining 70 Elo points!

Born in 2006, Sarayu is 15 years old. Her current LIVE rating is 1915. But she is highly under-rated. Check out some of her games from the past years and you will see why we have so much faith in her. In the games below you will find her wins against some of the best rising talents of Indian chess:

Nandini Srikar and her family contribute

Nandini Srikar is a very well-known singer and performer. Some of her songs in Bollywood have been critically acclaimed like Jo Bheji Thi Duaa from Shanghai and Bhare Naina from Ra One. A year or so ago, she started developing keen interest in chess. Nandini and her husband Brig. K.Srikar started following ChessBase India in order to learn more about the game. On one of the recent livestreams when I was speaking about Sarayu and other talents who are in need of funds, Nandini decided to chip in! "I enjoy playing chess and learning about it", says Nandini. "It's too late for me to pursue chess professionally, but I am in awe of the youngsters like Sarayu who are following their passion. And I would like to help them." Nandini and her family decided to contribute Rs.25,000. Half of this amount - Rs.12,500, will go to Sarayu and the remaining half of Rs.12,500 will go to the player whom we support with the February fund. A big thanks to Nandini and her entire family for their thoughtful gesture of supporting upcoming chess talents of the country.

The Srikar family: Daughter Nishika, Nandini, Brigadier Srikar and son-in-law Pushkal Kapoor
Feel the powerful and soothing voice of Nandini

We also received a contribution of Rs.3,002 from Mr. Ajit Kumar Sharma from Rajasthan. While making the contribution he had mentioned that this amount should go to the beneficiary for the month of January. With Ajit and Nandini's contribution the total amount that will be given to Sarayu is Rs.55,853+ Rs.15,502 = Rs.71,355. This amount will be used by her to plan tournaments outside India, which will help her to grow as a player.

A big thanks to all our members for contributing regularly and helping to power chess in India. The dreams of these youngsters receive wings because of the money you spend and we are very grateful for your support. It's by these small gestures by each one of you that India is slowly and steadily becoming a super power in the world of chess!
