ChessBase India YouTube Membership update for June 2021

ChessBase India's YouTube Membership program under the HelpChess Foundation has been working well thanks to the support of the people following the channel. In the month of June we have had 443 members with the total amount coming to Rs.77,383. All of this sum has been given to Pranav V. the current Tamil Nadu State Champion, who is just 14 years old. And Pranav has made excellent use of the funds by travelling to Serbia and achieving his final IM norm, maiden GM norm, and his IM title! A big thanks to all the people who contributed! Together we are truly powering chess in India!

The final amount comes to Rs.77,383 after the 30% YouTube deductions. This entire amount will be used to fund the Serbian trip of 14-year-old Pranav V., the current Tamil Nadu State Champion. We interviewed Pranav when he won the Tamil Nadu state championship with a score of 9.0/9 and his father Venkatesh made an appeal for the members of the chess community to come forward and support his son Pranav.

When the GoFundMe link was put in the above video, a lot of people came forward and contributed to support Pranav. From Rs.17,376 the total amount rose to Rs.179,641. Venkatesh used these funds for Pranav's chess and also for planning his chess tournaments. However, the Covid situation made it extremely difficult for Venkatesh to plan the events. There was tension with regards to travelling and although he saw many youngsters travelling to Serbia, he wasn't sure about taking the travelling risks. Finally, he decided to bite the bullet and plan Pranav's trip of three events to Serbia.

As there was a need for more funds for the trip, we decided to use the June funds of the ChessBase India YouTube memberships for this purpose. We requested the viewers of our YouTube channel to support this cause and a massive 443 of them came forward bringing the final amount to Rs.77383. Meanwhile, Venkatesh started planning the trip. He booked his flights to Belgrade via Abu Dhabi and everything was in place. But just a couple of days before he was about to leave, the news broke that Indians will not be allowed to travel via Abu Dhabi and Qatar due to Covid-19 reasons. The entire money that was spent on the tickets was in danger of being lost. But where there is a will there is way. Venkatesh figured out a way to have his flights shifted with a halt in Amsterdam.

The road to reaching Belgrade was tough, but once that was achieved Pranav was in sublime form at the Serbia Open 2021. Pranav went to the tournament with a rating of 2366 and two IM norms. He not only gained close to 70 Elo points surpassing the rating barrier of 2400, but also achieved his IM title in the process. To add the cherry on top of the cake, he also scored his 1st GM norm with one round to spare.

It feels great that the aim which we set out to achieve with three events - of Pranav becoming an IM, has been achieved in just one. But that means that we can aim higher now, and in the remaining two tournaments, we hope the young lad will continue his form and who knows, he may even achieve his GM title!

An update about the May fund

Karthik is being trained by N. Ramaraju for five days a week from Monday to Friday and this has been going on from 27th May!

An update about the April Fund

The details of the April Fund have been mentioned in our previous article on the memberships along with the names of all the donors. We had received Rs.34,588. During the Super Heroes Cup in December 2020, we had received Rs.15,000 from a donor who doesn't wish to reveal his identity. Adding this Rs.15,000 to the April Fund of YouTube memberships, we have a total sum of Rs.49.588. All of this amount will be utilized to support and upcoming young talent - WIM Savitha Shri.

WIM Savitha Shri with a rating of 2281 is born in 2007. She is just 14 years old and is one of the biggest talents in the country. Her father, Baskar, who tries extremely hard to keep his daughter's chess career going was in need of funds. We have decided to sponsor her training with a GM to the tune of Rs.50,000.

GM Shyam Sundar, who has already begun training Savitha, is an accomplished trainer and a strong grandmaster. Until now nine sessions have been completed.
