Who we are

chessbase.in is operated by ChessBase India 64 Squares Pvt Ltd. This policy explains what this website collects, why, and what you can do about it.

Questions, corrections and deletion requests: chessbaseindia@gmail.com.

This policy covers this website. The ChessBase India mobile app is covered by its own policy: chessbase.in/app-privacy-policy

At a glance: what we access, collect, store and use

Google sign-in (only if you comment or submit an event): we access and store your name, email address, profile picture and Google account identifier, and use them to keep you signed in, to show your name on your comments and to let moderators contact you about submissions.

Comments and events you submit: we store what you write or enter, and publish it as described below.

Usage data: Google Analytics collects your IP address, the pages you open, your device and browser through cookies; we use it only in aggregate. Our servers log IP addresses briefly for security.

YouTube API Services: we access and store only public information about videos on our own YouTube channel and on playlists we choose (titles, dates, durations, view counts, thumbnails, live-stream times), and use it to list those videos on the site. We do not access, collect, store or use any YouTube or Google account data of yours, and no API data relating to you as a user. Details are in the YouTube API Services section below.

We do not sell any of it or use it for advertising.

What you give us

Reading the site needs no account. You are asked to sign in only to comment on an article or to submit an event to the chess calendar.

Signing in uses Google. When you sign in we receive and store your name, email address, profile picture and the account identifier Google gives us. We never receive your Google password.

Comments are handled by Coral, which we run at comments.chessbase.in. Your name and comment are published with the article; your email address is not.

When you submit an event we store what you enter on the form — the event details, the organiser's name and email address, registration and website links and, if you attach one, a PDF brochure. The organiser's email address, the links and the brochure are published on the event page once the event is approved. The name and email on your own account are visible only to our moderators.

What is collected automatically

We use Google Analytics through Google Tag Manager to count visits and see which pages are read. It sets cookies and records your IP address, the pages you open, and your device and browser. We use it in aggregate; we do not try to identify you from it.

Signing in sets one session cookie on chessbase.in. It lasts seven days and is removed when you sign out. Our servers keep ordinary request logs, which include IP addresses, for a short period for security and debugging.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser. The site stays readable without them; staying signed in does not.

YouTube API Services

This site uses YouTube API Services to show videos from the ChessBase India YouTube channel, and from the YouTube playlists we list on our live event pages. By using those parts of the site you agree to be bound by the YouTube Terms of Service, which you can read here: www.youtube.com/t/terms

Google's Privacy Policy explains how Google handles data collected through its services, including YouTube: policies.google.com/privacy

What we request through the API is limited to public information about those videos: video identifiers, titles, publication dates, durations, view counts and thumbnail URLs, and for a live stream its scheduled and actual start times. We store that information on our servers so the site does not call the API on every visit.

We do not ask you to connect a YouTube or Google account for this, we request no permission on your YouTube account, and we neither collect nor store nor share any YouTube user data belonging to you. Nothing we fetch from the API is personal data about our visitors.

Pages on this site may embed the YouTube player, and clicking through takes you to YouTube. When the player loads, YouTube may set its own cookies and collect data about you under Google's Privacy Policy, which we do not control.

The stored video lists are refreshed regularly, and at least every 25 days. A refresh replaces a list, so a video that leaves the channel's recent uploads or an event's playlist is deleted from our servers with it. Between events the list of live streams is emptied, and we keep no copies of the video files themselves.

You can see which applications have access to your Google account, and remove any of them, on Google's permissions page: myaccount.google.com/permissions. Because this site asks for no permission on your YouTube account, you will not find one to revoke there for it; signing out of this site ends the session it does use. To ask what we hold or to have it deleted, write to chessbaseindia@gmail.com.

How we use what we hold

To keep you signed in, to publish your comments and approved events, to review submissions before they are published, to answer you when you write to us, to keep the site secure, and to understand which articles are read.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for advertising.

Who else sees it

Google, for sign-in and analytics. Coral, for comments. Bunny CDN, which serves our images and uploaded brochures. Our hosting and database providers, which store the site's data on our behalf.

Our online shop runs on Shopify; once you are on the shop, Shopify's own policies apply. Articles link to other websites, which we do not control.

We also disclose information when the law requires it.

Keeping and deleting your data

We keep your account, comments and submitted events for as long as your account exists.

Write to chessbaseindia@gmail.com to get a copy of what we hold about you, to correct it, or to have your account and the data tied to it deleted. We will act on the request within 30 days. Deleting your account removes your name, email address and profile picture from our records; published events you submitted are removed from the calendar, and comments are removed from Coral.

Unattached brochure uploads are deleted automatically within 24 hours, and brochures removed from an event within seven days.

Security

Traffic to this site is encrypted, sign-in is handled by Google, and access to our systems is limited to the people who need it. No site can promise perfect security, but we take it seriously and we will tell you if something goes wrong that affects you.

Children

This site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information. If you believe a child has given us personal information, write to us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

We will post any change on this page and update the date at the top. Please look here from time to time.
