28th Abu Dhabi Masters 2022 R8: Arjun Erigaisi vanquishes Hao, now India no.3 and World no.27

Arjun Erigaisi defeated the top seed Hao Wang (CHN) to regain his sole lead 6.5/8 at 28th Abu Dhabi Masters 2022. He will face Spain no.4 GM David Anton Guijarro in the final round. Nine players are trailing by a half point at 6/8 each. Nihal Sarin, Sethuraman S P and Aryan Chopra are the three Indians among them. IM Aditya Samant drew with Argentina no.1, GM Sandro Mareco. Ajay Krishna S who became an IM last year at the age of 22 years, outplayed GM Iniyan P. IM Shyam Nikhil vs GM Raunak Sadhwani is the sole All-Indian clash among top 20 boards in the final round. Pranesh conquers 33rd City of Cannes Summer Open 2022

IM Pranesh M scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win 33rd City of Cannes Summer Open 2022. He finished a half point ahead of the runner-up, Alexandre Bacrot (FRA). Pranesh defeated him in the fifth round. Three players scored 6/9. IM Pavel Govciyan (FRA) secured the third place according to tie-breaks. The 15-year-old winner drew with him in the seventh round. The total prize fund of the tournament was €3200. Top three prizes were €1200, €800 and €500 each along with a trophy each. 28th Abu Dhabi Masters 2022 R7: Aditya Samant outplays Australia no.2 Temur Kuybokarov

Arjun Erigaisi drew with Ray Robson (USA) to maintain his lead at 28th Abu Dhabi Masters 2022. Jorden van Foreest (NED), Nodirbek Yakubboev (UZB) and M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI) are the remaining three leaders 5.5/7. IM Aditya S Samant defeated Australia no.2 GM Temur Kuybokarov convincingly. He moved to 5/7 along with Harsha Bharathakoti, Nihal Sarin, Arjun Kalyan, Sethuraman S P, Aryan Chopra and CM Soham Kamotra. Soham defeated GM Leon Luke Mendonca to continue his fantastic unbeaten run. He is gaining a massive 138.8 Elo rating points so far. M.S Nawin wins the 13th Modern School Fide Rated Chess Tournament

M.S. Nawin clinched the 13th Modern School Fide-rated chess tournament, scoring a perfect 7/7. 3 players tied for second place with 6.5/7- Ashwin Sairam, Lukesh A, and Vignesh Kannan P. The tournament took place from 12th-15th August, with a 90+30 time control.  Nawin was the second-highest-rated player in the event, and he increased his rating by 32 points with this victory. It was a big day for Praggnanandhaa as he beat Magnus Carlsen in the final round of the FTX Crypto Cup 2022. Pragg played fascinating chess and won three games in a row to take home the match in the blitz tiebreaks. After the games ended, we waited for Pragg to arrive for the interview and he did not disappoint! At 3 a.m. he arrived and although he was quite tired, he patiently answered all the questions. Special thanks to Ayushi and Harshil for this interview- the people who made it possible to do interviews of the players right from the venue.

Vishnu Prasanna clinches Olympiad Curtain Raiser Rapid Rating Open with a perfect 9/9

Before 44th Chess Olympiad took place, on Sunday 24th July a one-day Olympiad Curtain Raiser Rapid Rating Open 2022 tournament took place. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for many players to play in the same hall and boards, also for the organizers to test everything before the biggest chess extravaganza was going to place. It goes without saying that the organizing team pulled off both events with huge success and shattering records in the process too. GM Vishnu Prasanna won the tournament with a perfect score 9/9. It is obvious that anything less than that would not have been enough for a championship. Subhayan Kundu scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to finish second. IM Ravi Teja S made 8/9 to secure third place. Arjun Erigaisi defeated Raunak Sadhwani to get back in the lead at 28th Abu Dhabi Masters 2022. Arjun has not only joined Ray Robson (USA) in the lead 5/6 but also climbed to India no.4 and World no.29 in the live ratings. 13 players including three Indians, Karthikeyan Murali, Nihal Sarin and Sethuraman S P are in pursuit at 4.5/6 each. Indonesia no.1 woman, IM Irene Sukandar is having a phenomenal run. She defeated GM Robert Hovhannisyan (ARM) and moved to 4.5/6. Pranav Venkatesh becomes India's 75th Grandmaster

Pranav Venkatesh earned his maiden GM-norm at Serbia Masters 2021. He also became an International Master at the very same event. Almost a year later, he scored his second norm at Vezerkepzo GM June in Budapest, Hungary. He also crossed 2500 in the live ratings in the process. Needing only his final GM-norm, after Svetozar Gligoric Memorial Masters, his father decided to take him to 5th Limpedea Cup 2022 where he won the event and scored his final GM-norm. He became India's 75th GM on 7th August, a little over week before India completed its 75th year of Independence. Raunak Sadhwani dominates 28th Abu Dhabi Chess Festival Blitz 2022

The recently concluded 44th Chess Olympiad Bronze medalist, GM Raunak Sadhwani continues his great form. He scored an unbeaten 10/11 to win 28th Abu Dhabi Chess Festival 2022 Blitz Open. The 16-year-old finished a full point ahead of the field and he also had a full point lead heading into the last round. A draw was enough to win the tournament, and that is exactly what he did against the second runner-up, GM Samvel Ter-Sahakyan (ARM). Raunak defeated the eventual runner-up, GM Adam Tukhaev (UKR) in the ninth round. The total prize fund of the Blitz Open was US$ 2700. Top 3 prizes were $1000, $700 and $500 each. Praggnanandhaa beats Magnus three times in-a-row, still Carlsen wins FTX Crypto Cup 2022

Praggnanandhaa did the unfathomable for many, beat the world champion in a Meltwater Champions Chess Tour final round that also a Major one. Sure, many people predicted and hoped for the 17-year-old's victory. Carlsen has won two Regular events in this season and this was his first Major event win. After two draws in the Rapid games, Carlsen won the third one and put Praggnanandhaa in a must-win situation. He not only won that but also won both Blitz tie-break games. Thus, the teenager won the final round of FTX Crypto Cup 2022, however, the world no.1 won the tournament as he was already ahead by two points. How did it so happen that the team surpassed all expectations and clinched the gold in the Chennai chess Olympiad? What was the role of Ivan Sokolov? How much time did he spend with the team? GM Ray Robson (USA) scored the sole win among the pack to emerge sole leader 4.5/5 at 28th Abu Dhabi Masters 2022. It was the sole decisive game among the top ten boards. GM Nihal Sarin defeated IM Artur Davtyan (ARM) to join the remaining pursuers at 4/5 each. Arjun Erigaisi and Raunak Sadhwani drew with Netherlands no.2  Jorden van Foreest and Egypt no.1 Bassem Amin respectively. Sandipan Chanda had a great opportunity in the endgame to beat the super solid Aryan Chopra. Olympiad Gold medalist, GM Shamsiddin Vokhidov's tough form continues as he made a narrow escape against IM Sammed Jaykumar Shete. Today is a rest day for the Classical tournament. Magnus Carlsen on the verge of winning the FTX Crypto Cup 2022

Magnus Carlsen and Praggnanandhaa both started Meltwater Champions Chess Tour FTX Crypto Cup Round 6 with a loss. They managed to force tie-breaks. Praggnanandhaa was completely winning the first Blitz tie-break game against Jan-Krzysztof Duda. However, missing a mate in one cost him the game. The Poland no.1 gave him no opportunity in the second game and scored a second straight win to claim the match. Meanwhile, Carlsen and Firouzja had their chances in the third game. The world champion won the first tie-break game and managed to draw the second to win the match. He will face Praggnanandhaa in the final round 7 which starts tonight at 9:30 p.m. IST. FIDE World Fischer Random Chess Championship is back with its second edition. The over-the-board final will take place in Reykjavik, Iceland, from 25th-30th October 2022. If you are wondering about an opportunity to play in the Qualifiers, fret not. Qualifiers will take place on lichess and chess.org. While anyone can play in the lichess qualifiers, chess.com qualifiers is only for FIDE titled players. There is no entry fee for any of the numerous qualifiers which started on lichess from 19th August 2022.
