13th KIIT GM Open R9: Amonatov on the verge of a triumph

GM Farrukh Amonatov (TJK) scored another victory in the penultimate round. He defeated IM Mihail Nikitenko to extend his lead by a full point 8/9. The top seed is now just a draw away from winning 13th KIIT International Chess Festival 2022. Six players are at 7/9 including IM Ameya Audi who will face Amonatov in the final round. KIIT's very own Nilsu Pattnaik and Daksh Goyal beat IM P Saravana Krishnan and IM P Konguvel, FM Ram Aravind L N and Ankit Ray drew with GM Ziaur Rahman (BAN) and IM Asyl Abdyjapar (KGZ) respectively. Leon Luke Mendonca triumphs at Hamburg Chess Club GM Invitational 2022

GM Leon Luke Mendonca scored an unbeaten 7/9 to win Hamburg Chess Club GM Invitational 2022. He remained undefeated and finished a half point ahead of the field. This is Leon's second tournament of the year. Just like the previous event at Bangaladesh Premier League, Leon once again remained unbeaten. The 16-year-old gained 11.3 Elo rating points, taking his live rating to 2562.3. The reason behind Leon taking part in less events is because he was preparing for his tenth grade board exams for over nine months. Laxman R R wins DKCA All India Rapid Rating Open 2022

GM Laxman R R who is known as the 'Speed King' of India for having the habit of winning plenty of tournaments all over the country, mainly in the faster formats. He won his first Rating tournament of the year, overall his third triumph of 2022. Four players - GM Laxman, IM Nitin S, IM Ratnakaran K and IM Himal Gusain scored 8.0/9 each. Laxman won the event due to better tie-break score. The remaining three were placed second to fourth respectively according to tie-breaks. Except Nitin, the remaining three remained undefeated. GM Farrukh Amonatov (TJK) scored an emphatic victory over GM Boris Savchenko. The top seed of 13th KIIT International Chess Festival is now the sole leader 7/8. Four players - GM Aleksej Aleksandrov, GM Azer Mirzoev (AZE), GM Stupak Kirill and IM Mihail Nikitenko are trailing by a half point. GM Luka Paichadze (GEO) went wrong in the opening against Nikitenko. WIM Arpita Mukherjee and IM P Saravana Krishnan drew with GM Alexei Fedorov and GM Laxman R R respectively. IM Nitin S made a short work of WGM Kiran Manish Mohanty in 22 moves. Ding Liren clinches Chessable Masters 2022, Praggnanandhaa delivers stupendous performance

Praggnanandhaa needed to win the second set of the Finals to keep his chances. He managed to do that without losing a single game. The only loss he faced was in the second Blitz tie-break game. He was completely winning the first one. The 16-year-old not only shined and impressed the entire chess universe but also ensured that he is ready to face the challenge against the very best of the world. He is the only player in this event who managed to beat Ding Liren twice. The scoreboard may show that he finished as the runner-up, however, the real winner by making the most out of his opportunity is certainly Praggnanandhaa. Top seed and Tajikistan no.1 GM Farrukh Amonatov is in a four-way lead along with Boris Savchenko, Aleksej Aleksandrov and Azer Mirzoev at the conclusion of the seventh round of 13th KIIT International Chess Festival 2022. Six players are trailing by a half point. Out of them, the only Indian player is WIM Arpita Mukherjee. She is undefeated so far and currently on a three-game winning streak. Praloy Sahoo, Shiva Pavan Teja Sharma U and Rajanya Datta defeated IM Asyl Abdyjapar (KGZ), IM P Konguvel and IM Manish Anto Cristiano F respectively in the seventh round. Bhoopnath wins 13th KIIT International Chess Festival 2022 Category 'B' Below 1900

Both Bhoopnath and newly crowned National Amateur Under-1700 Open champion, Kushal O scored an unbeaten 8.5/10. They faced each other in the final round and the game was drawn. Bhoopnath clinched the first place at 13th KIIT International Chess Festival Category B (Below 1900) due to better tie-breaks, Kushal had to settle for second place. Krishna Karthik N was adjuged third out of four players who finished with a score of 8/10. Total prize fund for Category B was ₹600000. Chessable Masters 2022 F1: Ding Liren gains advantage

Ding Liren won the first game at the Chessable Masters Finals. How did Praggnanandhaa react? He immediately struck back in the second game to level the score. Until that loss, Ding Liren suffered only one loss against Mamedyarov out of 24 games he had played in this event. The 16-year-old lost the third game and drew the fourth, thus the World no.2 won the first set of Finals. Now, Praggnanandhaa must win the second set of the Finals to force tie-breaks, irrespective of the set score. Can Praggnanandhaa win the second set and force tie-breaks? IM Nitin S is the only Indian player with a perfect score 4/4 at 13th KIIT International Chess Festival 2022. The remaining four are - GM Farrukh Amonatov (TJK), GM Aleksej Aleksandrov, GM Stupak Kirill and IM Shota Azaladze (GEO). Nitin won an exciting game against IM Mihail Nikitenko in the fourth round. IM Ameya Audi got himself very close to beating GM Boris Savchenko. Double IM-norm holder, FM Aaryan Varshney made an impressive draw against GM Luka Paichadze (GEO). Abhijeet Gupta has made a fantastic start at 5th Sharjah Masters 2022. He won all four of his games to gain sole lead 4/4. Three out of four wins were against strong 2600+ - Shant Sargsyan, Raunak Sadhwani and Misratdin Iskandarov (AZE). Only three players - Salem Saleh (UAE), Bogdan-Daniel Deac (ROU) and Mustafa Yilmaz (TUR) are trailing by a half point at 3.5/5. Earlier this year, when Praggnanandhaa faced Giri in the first round of Tata Steel Chess 2022, it was the Dutch no.1 who came up with a novelty. A little over five months later, the 16-year-old set the tone of the day when he scored an emphatic victory in the second game with his own novelty. Giri levelled the score in the fourth game to force tie-breaks. The wunderkind once again showed his tenacity by winning the first tie-break and making a draw in the next one. Vishy Anand played fantastic chess at Superbet Rapid and Blitz 2022. Despite starting the final day with two losses and a draw, he persevered and scored 4 points in the next six games to finish with 23.5/36. Levon Aronian also scored the same. However, Jan-Krzysztof Duda once again scored an important last round victory to win the tournament 24/36. Duda has all the momentum on his side heading into the Candidates 2022 with two important tournament victories. He has shown strong nerves since his FIDE World Cup 2021 triumph. Chessable Masters 2022 QF: Praggnanandhaa eliminates Wei Yi, set to clash with Giri in the Semifinal

Praggnanandhaa became the first Indian to advance to a MCCT event Semifinal. He beat Wei Yi convincingly 1.5-2.5 in the Quarterfinals to set up a clash with Anish Giri. Both Giri and Carlsen took the minimum number of games to win their Quarterfinal matches. Giri is yet to lose a single game in this event. Both Pragg and Ding Liren lost a game each in the Quarterfinals. Pragg is playing at a different level since Oslo Esports Cup and he seems to be in a very good place to end Giri's unbeaten streak. Former National Under-13 Girls, current Telangana State Under-19 Girls and State Women champion, Sarayu Velpula held GM Karthikeyan P to a draw. The second round of 13th KIIT International Chess Festival also saw the seeded players score victories comfortably. Newly crowned National Amateur U-2300 champion, Koustav Chakraborty made things exciting against IM Mihail Nikitenko.
