Mayank Chakraborty and Mrittika Mallick are the MPL 33rd National Under-17 Open and Girls Chess Champions

CM Mayank Chakraborty (ASM) and Mrittika Mallick (WB) scored an unbeaten 10/11 and 9.5/11 each to win MPL 33rd National Under-17 Open and Girls Chess Championship 2022 respectively. Both of them finished a full point ahead of the competition. Ajay Santhosh Parvathareddy (UP) scored sole 9/11 to finish second. Vignesh Advaith Vemula (TEL) edged past Madhavan R Munjanattu (KER) on tie-breaks to finish third 8.5/11. Mayank defeated Ajay and drew against Vignesh. In the Girls event, Sarayu Velpula (TEL) and the reigning National Amateur Below-200 Women champion, scored 8.5/11. They were placed second and third respectively according to tie-breaks. Mrittika drew against both of them.

Mayank wins Under-17 Open for the second consecutive year

CM Mayank Chakraborty gained sole lead after the sixth round 6/6. He never lost it for the rest of the tournament and finished a full point ahead of the field. He won it for the second consecutive year and he is just 13-years-old. He still has three more opportunities left. Mrittika Mallick was trailing by a half point heading into the ninth round 7/8. Sarayu Velpula was held to a draw by Rajanya Datta and Mrittika defeatd Marium Fatima. Thus, both of them shared the lead 7.5/9. Two crucial wins in the last two rounds, allowed Mrittika to win the tournament and finish a full point ahead of the field, same as Mayank did.

Total prize fund of the tournament was ₹450000 in each section. Top three prizes were ₹90000, ₹70000 and ₹58000 along with a trophy each.

Open: CM Mayank Chakraborty 10/11

CM Mayank Chakraborty (ASM, 2025) started with six consecutive wins including a victory over the eventual runner-up, Ajay Santhosh Parvathareddy (UP, 1925) in the fifth round. He also defeated the Commonwealth 2022 Under-14 Gold and Under-20 Bronze medalist, CM Gaurang Bagwe (MAH, 2067) in the sixth round. After a draw against the eventual second runner-up, Vignesh Advaith Vemula (TEL, 2004) in the seventh round, Mayank was up against the reigning National Sub-Junior Open champion, Aswath S (TN, 2162).

Mayank got a better position out of the Scotch Opening against Aswath. 22...Reb8 was a positional mistake. 23.a4 to prepare capturing the a6-pawn Qe7 24.Rxb8 Rxb8 25.Qxa6 Qe8 26.Qa7 Qd8 27.Bh4 Ra8 28.Bxd8 Rxa7 29.g4 g6 30.gxf5 forcing the g-file to open only helps White gxf5 31.Ra1 Bc5+ 32.Kg2 Be3 33.Kf3 Bd2 34.a5 Bxc3 White can most certainly afford giving up the double c3-pawn. 35.Rg1+ Kf7 36.Bf6 d4 37.a6 Bb4 38.Rg7+ Ke8 39.Rh7 Bf8 40.Kf2 Bc8 41.Be2 and Black resigned.

Girls: Mrittika Mallick 9.5/11

Mrittika Mallick (WB, 1948) started with five consecutive wins before making three consecutive draws including against the remaining podium finishers Sarayu Velpula (TEL, 1835) and Rajanya Datta (WB, 1556). Mrittika finished the tournament with a hat-trick of wins which allowed her to finish a full point ahead of the field.

Black's position was already lost. 32...f6 only accelerated it. Mrittika found the excellent 33.Rxf6! exf6 34.e7 Nf7 35.e8Q+ Rxe8 36.Qxe8+ Qf8 37.Nxf6+ Kg7 38.Qxf8+ Kxf8 39.Nxh7+ Kg7 40.Ng5 Nxg5 41.hxg5 White is ahead by two pawns in the resultant rook endgame. She had no trouble converting her advantage into a win. This important victory put Mrittika back in the sole lead 8.5/10.

Mrittika Mallick scored 9.5/11, remained undefeated and finished a full point ahead of the field

A total of 150 players in the Open and 95 players in the Girls event tournament took part from 24 states and union territories across the country. It was organized by District Chess Association Jalandhar at DAV Institute of Engineering and Technology, Kabir Nagar in Jalandhar, Punjab from 1st to 9th May 2023. The eleven-round Swiss league tournament had a time control of 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment from move no.1.
