Nandan Buragohain wins 5th Kurukshetra Open 2018 in Dibrugarh, Assam

Nandan Buragohain of Assam became the champion of the 5th Kurukshetra Open FIDE Rated Tournament by scoring of 8.0/9 points. He remained unbeaten throughout the tournament and gained 40 Elo rating points. Souradib Deb of Tripura scored 7.5/9 points and took the 2nd position adding 73 elo rating points. For the third position there was a seven way tie with 7.0/9 points each which was secured by RK Bhogen Singh of Manipur with better tie-break score. A thrilling online match between DBCA and KCA ends in 8-8 draw

Students in any academy are often bored playing repeatedly against each other! So we thought why not make them compete against students of another academy! In the first of its kind match two of India's biggest and finest chess academies were pitted against each other in a unique exhibition online match. Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy from Kolkata and Kunte's Chess Academy from Pune. It was held on the Playchess server and the time control was 45 minutes + 10 seconds increment. The match was keenly contested and it ended in a thrilling 8.0-8.0 draw. We have a lot of videos, pictures, games and analysis from this online match.

Samriddhaa Ghosh wins 44th West Bengal State Women Chess Championship 2018

Samriddhaa Ghosh won 44th West Bengal State Women FIDE Rated Chess Championship 2018 by scoring 5.5/6. This tournament has been won by WFM Arpita Mukherjee from 2014-2017, however this year she was unable to defend her title as she was on national duty at Asian Youth 2018. The tournament was so close that there were five players at 4.5 points heading into sixth and final round. Samriddhaa was the top seed of the tournament and she remained undefeated. and the only draw was against the eventual runner-up of the tournament, Pallabi Roy who also scored 5.5/6. Mehendi Sil who gave a strong competition to the champion of the tournament, scored 5.0/6 and finished at third position. We all know that Jacob Aagaard is one of the world's most prolific author and trainer from Scotland. He is the only one to win all four major book of the year awards! And if you follow him on Facebook then you would know that he is a die hard fan of rock music and known to give free guitar lessons along with high quality chess training classes. Shocking news: B-group of Kolkata 2018 is cancelled, Venue for A group changed

It's a very rare occurrence in Indian chess that a tournament is cancelled. The 3rd Kolkata Grandmasters Open 2018 (14th-22nd May) consisted of both the A (above 2000 Elo) and the B group (Below 2000 Elo). The B-group has been called off because the Government turned down the grant appeal at the last moment. The venue for the A-group has also changed. We have a statement from the organizer GM Dibyendu Barua and Srenik Sett and also from the AICF Secretary Bharat Singh Chauhan.

On 6th April 2018, a unique chess event titled 'Chess 'n' mate 2018' took place between India's 2nd Grandmaster in history, GM Dibyendu Barua and former Women's World Chess Champion, 'Chess Queen', Alexandra Kosteniuk of Russia. They played three Blitz matches online, the third being a Fischer Random match to commemorate International Day of Peace for Development and Sport to spread the message of White Card campaign. 6-year-old Lakshana becomes the world under-7 schools champion

At the age of six, kids find it tough to accomplish the banal day to day tasks of life - like eating food without spilling it, tying your shoe laces, or getting dressed on your own! But here we have S. Lakshana, a six-year-old prodigy from Sivaganga district near Madhurai. She recently won the World Schools Championship in the under-7 girls section. IM Sagar Shah looked closely at two of her games and he was greatly impressed. At the age of six Lakshana is showing skills which players much above her age find it hard to grasp! We assure you that you are going to hear her name a lot in future, and hence we acquaint you with this phenomenal talent in this article. 

Clash of two of India's biggest chess academies - DBCA vs KCA

Dibyendu Barua is India's second grandmaster while Abhijit Kunte is India's fourth. Both of them have made the country proud on numerous occasions with their excellent chess skills. After they stopped playing actively (Abhijit Kunte still plays a lot though!) both Barua and Kunte decided to pass on their knowledge to students who were eager to improve. That's the reason why Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy (DBCA) and Kunte's Chess Academy (KCA) came into existence in Kolkata and Pune respectively. They are two of the biggest academies in India and today, on 30th April 2018, 16 players from each of the academy will face off against each other in a unique exhibition match!

Swara Lakshmi and Jagadish P bag titles at the Karnataka State under-15

For the third time in Karnataka, State Under 15 Open Chess Championship was held as a rated event and this year even the Girls category was FIDE rated! Swara Lakshmi and Jagadish P won the championship in girls and open category respectively. There was a four-way tie in the open category with 7.5/9 points each, which was won by the top seed Jagadish P with better buchholz score of 54.5. On the other hand Swara Lakshmi remained unbeaten throughout the 9 rounds to clinch her maiden title in the girls category. Mr. Nagendra Muralidhar who is the director of the Mysore Chess Centre sends us a detailed summary of what happened at the event.

How can you play against GMs and IMs on Playchess

Historically, ducats are trade coins which were used in Europe from the middle ages to the early 20th century. Modern ducats are used to pay on the playchess.com chess server: to bet on games, to pay for ChessBase products, to hire strong players for lessons, to play simuls, etc. It is an easy way to transact on the ChessBase and Playchess platform. Usually playing against a GM is very difficult but with Ducats, the chances of them playing are much higher. But one thing did not change over the centuries: the more ducats, the better!

Tarun and Trisha Kanyamarala continue their coverage of the World Schools 2018 that is currently taking place in Albania. Trisha is currently in the top position with 4.5/6 in the girls under-13 section. For Indians three players are doing really well. They are Kush Bhagat in the under-9 section, Lakshana Subramanian in the under-7 girls section and Nityata Jain in the under-15 girls section. We also have pictures of the event sent to us by Rekha Nahar.  Indians are having a tough time with the food and also being forced to change their rooms, but their morale is still very high! 

Marienbad Open – Playing Chess in a Fairytale Town

The Marienbad Open 2018 was held in the Czech Republic as a part of the Czech Tour. Father and son duo Prashant and Raahil Mullick visited the tournament. Raahil won quite a few rating points and Prashant brings you high quality reporting. Marienbad, known as Marienske Lazne, is a fairy tale town covered white with snow. The festival had eight events - two GM norm tournaments, three IM norm events, one open classical, one rapid and one blitz. A lot of Indians participated. 9-year-old chess prodigy caught in the visa battle to stay in the UK

Recently the British daily national newspaper based in London, England - The Times, carried the story of the 9-year-old chess prodigy Shreyas Royal, who started playing chess when he was just five years old and in less than a year became the world's youngest candidate master. The nine-year-old star is now revered among the chess community, which has singled him out as the “most promising player we’ve had for a generation”. Celebrated chess players have tipped him to be Britain’s first official world champion. But now he is caught up in a battle to stay in the UK after his father's work visa is set to expire. Alekhya and Sinthia win 30th West Bengal State FIDE Rated Under 11 Chess Championship 2018

For the first time in West Bengal, State Under 11 Chess Championship became a rated event. Alekhya Mukhopadhyay and Sinthia Sarkar won the championship in open and girls category respectively. Alekhya scored 7.0/8 and Sinthia scored 6.5/7 to win the title. There was a four-way tie in the open category for the champion, but Alekhya became champion in State age group for the very first time due to a better tie-break score. Ayush Bhattacherjee, Rachishnu Datta and Swarnoj Saha Talukdar also finished at 7.0/8 and they secured 2nd, 3rd and 4th position respectively. In the girls category, Sinthia won her third State age group title with a full point difference. She is the Silver medal winner in under-10 girls category in Commonwealth Chess Championships 2017.
