World Youth 2018: Divya Deshmukh and Sanskriti Goyal win bronze

The World Youth Championships 2018 came to an end with two medals for the Indian team. Divya Deshmukh from Maharashtra won the bronze in the girls under-14 section, while Sanskriti Goyal from Uttar Pradesh took home the bronze medal in girls under-16. When the final two rounds began nine Indian players had a chance for the medal but finally only two of them were able to finish in the top three. Places four to six were also given medals and the Indians who finished in this bracket were Aashna Makhija (6th in under-16 girls), L. Jyothsna (5th in under-14 girls), Tejaswini Sagar (4th in girls under-18) and Arpita Mukherjee (6th in girls under-18). In this report we analyze two important games of Divya and Sanskriti's final round and also tell you about a cheating accusation.

Sammed Shete wins the Pursue your Chess scholarship of Rs.50,000

A chess lover from Bangalore, who wishes to remain anonymous, instituted the Pursue your Chess Scholarship of Rs.50,000 for a deserving player who had made at least one of his/her norms (WIM/IM, GM/WGM). The winner of this scholarship is Sammed Shete from Kolhapur. Sammed is just 19 years old but has already seen great number of ups and downs in his life. His father passed away in November 2016 due to mouth cancer. The youngster lost a lot of money when his visa was recently rejected for an international trip. But Sammed has kept powering on and currently has an Elo of 2368 with one IM norm. This scholarship is sure to be useful for him in his chess career. In this article we tell you about the scholarship and also the story of Sammed's life until now.  

WWCh 2018 Round 1.2: Humpy advances, Bhakti gets eliminated

Humpy advanced to round 2 with ease by winning her game against Hayat Toubal while Bhakti only managed to draw against Natalija Pogonina, resulting in her exit from the tournament. There is a reason this knockout format of Women's World Championship is being abolished. It is because of the unpredictable nature, where half the players are eliminated after every round. Harika drew her game against Sopiko Khukhashvili and Padmini also drew against Zhansaya Abdumalik. Both Harika and Padmini will have to play tie-break matches. When you think about popularizing the game of chess, a lot of ideas can cross your mind. But no idea can be crazier than what Timur Gareyev did in collaboration with US Chess Federation. The American GM is well-known to have tastes which are different and off-the-beaten-path. Recently, a video was published of Timur Gareyev sky-diving. This is nothing new for Timur who has close 150 solo jumps to his credit. This time, however, he dived with a chess board which had position from a 18th century classical romantic game! WWCh 2018 Round 1.1: Humpy dominates, Bhakti loses to Pogonina

FIDE Women's World Championship Round 1 Game 1 commenced on 3rd November at Khanty Mansiysk, Russia. Four Indian women have qualified to this prestigious knock-out World Championship. Humpy won her game 1 with ease, Harika and Padmini drew, Bhakti lost her first game. Humpy would require just a draw in game 2 to advance to Round 2, Harika and Padmini need a win to advance. However a draw means that they have to play tie-breakers. Bhakti is in a must-win situation. A draw or loss means that she has to head home. We bring you games and photos from Khanty-Mansiysk. Who has the biggest fan following in the world of chess? Is it Magnus Carlsen? Is it Vishy Anand? Or perhaps Garry Kasparov? While many great chess players have thrilled people with their outstanding over the board play, there is one particular person from Croatia named Antonio Radic aka Agadmator who has the fastest growing fan base in the world of chess. At the time of writing this article, he has the biggest chess YouTube Channel in the world with 290,000 subscribers! Agadmator creates instructive YouTube content for his subscribers on a daily basis which is free of cost. Creating videos for his followers is his full-time profession. In this interview by IM Sagar Shah, we ask Agadmator on how he started making a living out of creating YouTube videos, what were the most memorable moments in the journey and his future plans. 

Debarshi wins 56th West Bengal State Open 2018

Debarshi Mukherjee scored 8.5/10 and won 56th West Bengal State Open Championship 2018. Thus qualifying for the upcoming National Open Senior Championship 2018. Defending champion Neelash Saha scored 7.5/10 and secured 2nd position. He drew with the eventual champion of the tournament in the last round. Gopal Chandra Biswas made a strong comeback in this tournament, scored 7.5/10 and secured 3rd position due to a better tie-break score. In this report, we bring you photos from the tournament. Isle of Man Masters: Wojtaszek takes the title after a thrilling Playoff

After nine rounds at the Isle of Man Masters, Arkadij Naiditsch and Radoslaw Wojtaszek were still tied for first. In the final game, Naiditsch had deployed some neat tactical tricks to force a move repetition. While none of their chasers managed to catch up despite their draw, the two leaders fought tooth and nail until Wojtaszek emerged as the winner after the Armaggedon game. Adhiban Baskaran defeated Michael Adams to climb up to 6.5/9 and become the top scoring Indian while Vishy Anand held Wang Hao to a comfortable draw. Round 9 report.

Victor Mikhalevski on India's 54th GM Arjun Erigaisi

When you see him in person Arjun Erigaisi comes across as a humble, soft spoken, well mannered young boy. He speaks so less that it is easy to just miss him even when he is around. But when the youngster sits on the board and plays his moves, it is absolutely impossible to miss him. Indian chess is blessed with an amazing talent in the form of 15-year-old from Telangana Arjun Erigaisi. Arjun became a GM at the age of 14 years, 11 months and 12 days, which is faster than even the current World Championship challenger Fabiano Caruana. The amazing thing is that Arjun achieved his 3 IM norms and 3 GM norms within a span of eight months from January to August 2018! How did he do it? We ask his coach GM Victor Mikhalevski.

World Youth 2018: Nine Indians with a chance for a medal with two rounds to go!

With two rounds to go for the World Youth Championships 2018 (under-14,16,18) things are heating up in Porto Carras, Greece. The Indians who are in top ten after nine rounds and have a theoretical chance of winning a medal are Sankalp Gupta, Rithvik Raja, Kushagra Mohan, Arpita Mukherjee, Tejaswini Sagar, Aashna Makhija, Divya Deshmukh, Sanskriti Goyal, and L. Jyothsna. Sanklap Gupta completed his final IM norm and is on the brink of becoming India's latest International Master. There are in all 36 medals at stake. How many we win will be decided by the outcomes in the last two rounds. A pictorial report. 

Isle of Man Masters: Naiditsch and Wojtaszek emerge as leaders

The eighth round of the Isle of Man Masters saw the pack of leaders trim down from seven to just two. Beating Hikaru Nakamura and Mickey Adams respectively, Arkadij Naiditsch and Radoslaw Wojtaszek sped past the field and have taken a half point lead going into the final round. Meanwhile, Vishy Anand drew against Vladislav Artemiev. This draw meant that Anand is out of contention for the title. All other Indians are also at a score of either 5.5 or lower and will not have any chance at the title. Nevertheless, Vidit Gujrathi treated his fans and all those watching with a brilliant attacking game against Svane Rasmus. Round 8 report.
