It was last time in 1990 between Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov when the world championship was a battle between the highest ranked chess players. Caruana's rating is now just 2 points lesser then Carlsen in the live rating list and that makes it the first match in chess history where both the contenders are above the magical 2800 elo rating. This is the strongest match ever. In this article Srikanth Govindaseshan, an experienced former chess player and a current chess trainer of top players, takes us through the preview of the match from the perspective of the challenger.

Who has the biggest fan following in the world of chess? Is it Magnus Carlsen? Is it Vishy Anand? Or perhaps Garry Kasparov? While many great chess players have thrilled people with their outstanding over the board play, there is one particular person from Croatia named Antonio Radic aka Agadmator who has the fastest growing fan base in the world of chess. At the time of writing this article, he has the biggest chess YouTube Channel in the world with 290,000 subscribers! Agadmator creates instructive YouTube content for his subscribers on a daily basis which is free of cost. Creating videos for his followers is his full-time profession. In this interview by IM Sagar Shah, we ask Agadmator on how he started making a living out of creating YouTube videos, what were the most memorable moments in the journey and his future plans. 

Debarshi wins 56th West Bengal State Open 2018

Debarshi Mukherjee scored 8.5/10 and won 56th West Bengal State Open Championship 2018. Thus qualifying for the upcoming National Open Senior Championship 2018. Defending champion Neelash Saha scored 7.5/10 and secured 2nd position. He drew with the eventual champion of the tournament in the last round. Gopal Chandra Biswas made a strong comeback in this tournament, scored 7.5/10 and secured 3rd position due to a better tie-break score. In this report, we bring you photos from the tournament. Isle of Man Masters: Wojtaszek takes the title after a thrilling Playoff

After nine rounds at the Isle of Man Masters, Arkadij Naiditsch and Radoslaw Wojtaszek were still tied for first. In the final game, Naiditsch had deployed some neat tactical tricks to force a move repetition. While none of their chasers managed to catch up despite their draw, the two leaders fought tooth and nail until Wojtaszek emerged as the winner after the Armaggedon game. Adhiban Baskaran defeated Michael Adams to climb up to 6.5/9 and become the top scoring Indian while Vishy Anand held Wang Hao to a comfortable draw. Round 9 report.

Victor Mikhalevski on India's 54th GM Arjun Erigaisi

When you see him in person Arjun Erigaisi comes across as a humble, soft spoken, well mannered young boy. He speaks so less that it is easy to just miss him even when he is around. But when the youngster sits on the board and plays his moves, it is absolutely impossible to miss him. Indian chess is blessed with an amazing talent in the form of 15-year-old from Telangana Arjun Erigaisi. Arjun became a GM at the age of 14 years, 11 months and 12 days, which is faster than even the current World Championship challenger Fabiano Caruana. The amazing thing is that Arjun achieved his 3 IM norms and 3 GM norms within a span of eight months from January to August 2018! How did he do it? We ask his coach GM Victor Mikhalevski.

World Youth 2018: Nine Indians with a chance for a medal with two rounds to go!

With two rounds to go for the World Youth Championships 2018 (under-14,16,18) things are heating up in Porto Carras, Greece. The Indians who are in top ten after nine rounds and have a theoretical chance of winning a medal are Sankalp Gupta, Rithvik Raja, Kushagra Mohan, Arpita Mukherjee, Tejaswini Sagar, Aashna Makhija, Divya Deshmukh, Sanskriti Goyal, and L. Jyothsna. Sanklap Gupta completed his final IM norm and is on the brink of becoming India's latest International Master. There are in all 36 medals at stake. How many we win will be decided by the outcomes in the last two rounds. A pictorial report. 

Isle of Man Masters: Naiditsch and Wojtaszek emerge as leaders

The eighth round of the Isle of Man Masters saw the pack of leaders trim down from seven to just two. Beating Hikaru Nakamura and Mickey Adams respectively, Arkadij Naiditsch and Radoslaw Wojtaszek sped past the field and have taken a half point lead going into the final round. Meanwhile, Vishy Anand drew against Vladislav Artemiev. This draw meant that Anand is out of contention for the title. All other Indians are also at a score of either 5.5 or lower and will not have any chance at the title. Nevertheless, Vidit Gujrathi treated his fans and all those watching with a brilliant attacking game against Svane Rasmus. Round 8 report.

Thailand Chess introduces the brand new Pattaya Open 2018

When someone speaks about Thai chess, the first thing that comes to your mind is the Bangkok Open. The tournament visited by players like Nigel Short, Jan Gustaffson and many other world class players has become an annual destination for chess fans all over the world. But for the growth of chess in Thailand, just one event is not enough. That's the reason why former Thai national player Jarunpol Sajjapronthep and his wife Phuttarak Khampliw decided to organize the Pattaya Open from 20th to 31st of October 2018. What started as just plan for one tournament turned into an entire festival with youth and senior tournaments as well as an amateur section. In the first part of this report by Peter Long brings you the youth events and also an interview with the organizer.   

Isle of Man Masters: Abhijeet Gupta suffers his second straight defeat

GM Abhijeet Gupta lost his second game in a row against English GM Michael Adams. Once again, Gupta's opponent joined the tournament leaders having defeated him. On board  5, SP Sethuraman and Viswanathan Anand played a sedate draw in a Symmetrical English. The top board draw between MVL and Naiditsch also played a short draw but this came only after some sparkling tactics in the middle game. In the meanwhile, R Praggnanandhaa played in a Tal-like manner to bring down IM Ravi Teja in just 32 moves in a Caro-Kann defence. We have a pictorial report.

World Youth 2018: Can India win a medal?

The World Championships for under-14, 16 and 18 are being held in Greece from the 20th to the 30th of October 2018. 25 Indians have participated in this event. Seven rounds have been completed and the Indian players who are in top ten places are Sankalp Gupta, Kushagra Mohan, Tejaswini Sagar and L. Jyothsna. There are a few players like Divya Deshmukh and Mrudul Dehankar who have a good chance for a podium finish if they play well in the last four rounds. Indian chess faces a grave problem in such youth tournaments that the best players of the country do not participate in the World Youth Championships. Hence, the chances of us winning medals is significantly reduced. In this article we try to touch upon this problem and hope that a solution is found. 

ACL Challengers League 2018 begins

ACL Challengers League 2018 started on 20th October 2018 with 15 teams from various states across the country. 25 games were played in Round 1 between. In the unrated section, the first round winners are, Bangalore Chess Academy-1, Maestro Chess Academy Attackers, City Chess Club Bhuj and Maestro Chess Academy Strikers. Among the rated, the victorious teams are, d'pawn Chess Academy, Intermezzo and Royal Knight Chess Academy. Best game of round 1 winner's name is also announced. Isle of Man Masters: Nakamura beats Abhijeet Gupta to take shared first

Top seeds have begun gathering around the top spots after the sixth round of the Isle of Man Masters. While Wang Hao and Jeffery Xiong concluded their faceoff in a fighting draw, Hikaru Nakamura, Radoslaw Wojtaszek and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave won their games to join in on shared first. Nakamura defeated Abhijeet Gupta on the second board, thereby bringing the Indian GM off the top spot on the leaderboard. Meanwhile, Vishy Anand climbed up to the shared second place after his win over Daniel Fridman. On board 6, Adhiban effortlessly held Aronian to a draw with the white pieces while D Gukesh also scored a major upset defeating former Women's World Champion, Alexandra Kostenuik. Round 6 report.

Kavitha JE bags the Homepreneur Award 2018

Former U-10, U-12, U-15 and U-18 National Champion, Asian Sub-Junior Bronze medalist and Asian Junior Silver medalist WFM J.E.Kavitha wins the Homepreneur Award 2018. The Award is a unique initiative introduced by "Brand Avatar" to provide platform to recognize and celebrate the women who have chosen to pursue their passion through entrepreneurship from home. This year the total number of registrants were 6500 and out of which 150 were shortlisted and interviewed by an eminent jury. In this article we try to dig in and learn about Kavitha's experience in being a part of this initiative and in the end winning the prestigious award.
