World Chess Championship to have title sponsor for the first time next year

Generally when we think about a magnum opus event of a particular sport, a title sponsor is almost always associated with it. Be it FIFA, ICC, F1 or any other sporting event, the association of Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Redbull, Samsung, Adidas, Reebok, Puma, Castrol and various other brand with such sporting events have almost become synonymous to the sports fans and followers. FIDE for the first time is open to the idea of having a title sponsor for next year's World Championship. If the last nine months of the online chess boom has taught us anything, then a title sponsorship for FIDE World Championship is definitely going to be a right step in the forward direction. Harikrishna will star in the Champions Chess Tour Airthings Masters

Pentala Harikrishna played a pivotal role in Team India's historic Gold medal victory in FIDE Online Olympiad 2020 few months ago. He had a fantastic performance in Biel Masters and he also beat the World Champion in Saint Louis Blitz. The first Major of the 2020-21 Champions Chess Tour is the Airthings Masters with a prize fund of US$ 200,000. Former World Rapid Champion Dubov and Harikrishna are the wild card entrants of the tournament. Skilling Open winner Wesley So will be back in action along with Carlsen, Nakamura, Aronian, Nepomniachtchi, Grischuk, Giri, Radjabov and Anton. Grischuk and Anton won the public vote to join this event. Ivan Cheparinov wins VII Sunway Sitges Open with 8.0/10

Ivan Cheparinov won his last round game comfortably, scored sole 8.0/10 and finished a half point ahead of the competition to win VII Sunway Sitges International Open. He won a beautiful trophy and €5000 for his efforts. Jules Moussard and Jaime Santos Latasa finished with 7.5/10 each and they were placed second and third respectively. IM Leon Mendonca's quest to become India's latest GM is still on as he missed scoring his final norm. He scored 7.0/10, finished overall 10th and won Best Under-16 prize. Souhardo Basak scored his final IM-norm and now he just needs to touch 2400 to become India's latest IM. Nihal, Rakshitta and Gukesh win Gold in FIDE Online World Youth Rapid

Nihal Sarin, Gukesh and Rakshitta all three won their Finals against Shant, Murzin and Song to clinch Gold in Under-18 Open, Under-14 Open and Under-16 Girls respectively in FIDE Online World Youth Rapid. Nihal had to play both Semi-Finals and Finals on the same day as his original Semi-Final was disqualified from the event on the previous day. Mrinmoy Rajkhowa won Bronze as he beat Andy Woodward in the third-fourth place match. Both Nihal and Rakshitta only took two games to finish their opponents in the Final, while Gukesh beat Murzin in the Armageddon to secure the Gold in the long list of their accolades. Sunway Sitges Open R9: Leon Mendonca beats Nino Batsiashvili

Ivan Cheparinov, Jules Moussard and Jaime Santos Latasa will battle for the championship in the final round as they lead the tournament with 7.0/9 in VII Sunway Chess International Open. Cheparinov and Moussard made a draw to retain their lead, while Latasa beat the defending champion Korobov to join the leaders. IM Leon Mendonca beat GM Nino Batsiashvili and Souhardo Basak beat IM Yovanna Gatineau in the penultimate round. The Westbridge Anand Chess Academy will train 5 of India's biggest chess talents

Vishy Anand has ruled the no.1 spot in Indian chess for over 3 decades now. The five-time World Champion is now 51 years old and is still very much one of the best in the world with a classical Elo of 2753. But Anand also wants to ensure that there are youngsters in Indian chess who rise quickly to the top of the world rankings in the years to come. It is with this objective in mind that the Westbridge Anand Chess Academy has been created. Nihal Sarin, Praggnanandhaa, Raunak Sadhwani, Gukesh and Vaishali are the five youngsters who receive a fellowship and will be personally mentored by Vishy Anand.  

Gukesh and Rakshitta advance to the Finals of FIDE Online World Youth Rapid

Gukesh and Rakshitta secured their place in the Finals of FIDE Online World Youth Rapid Championships in Under-14 Open and Under-16 Girls category respectively. Gukesh will face IM Volodar Murzin of Russia and Rakshitta will face WIM Yuxin Song of China in the Finals. Mrinmoy Rajkhowa lost the Armageddon due to technicalities as he did not know that the final position was not a draw, despite having a decisive advantage for the majority of the game. Cheparinov and Moussard are the only two players among the leaders to have won the game and maintain their lead with 6.5/8 in VII Sunway Sitges Open. They will now face each other in the penultimate round. Korobov was held to a draw by Checa. Leon turned around a difficult position to a favorable endgame and win it. He will now face his GM of the event Nino Batsiashvili in Round 9. Souhardo beat IM Garriga and he will go against IM Yovann Gatineau. Four out of twelve Indian players have advanced to the Semi-Finals of FIDE Online World Cadets and Youth Rapid Championships. They are - Nihal, Gukesh, Rakshitta and Mrinmoy. Nihal beat Just Wang by 1.5-0.5, Gukesh beat Pranav 2-1, Rakshitta beat Hernandez 2-1 and Mrinmoy was the only Indian to beat his opponent Ryo Chen by 2-0. They all have advanced in the Semi-Finals in Under-18 Open, Under-14 Open, Under-16 Girls and Under-10 Open respectively. India's medal hopes lie in these four players. Sunway Sitges Open R7: Korobov is back at the top

Top two boards ending up in hard fought draws allowed the defending champion and top seed of the tournament Anton Korobov to catch up with the leaders with 5.5/7. Korobov along with four overnight leaders Jaime, Cheparinov, Niemann and Moussard are now joined by Checa, Fier and Nevednichy at the top spot with an eight-way lead. With three rounds to go, the tournament is still wide open, anyone can win. IM Leon salvaged a draw against FM Marc Sancho, Souhardo beat Alex Morales and Shubham drew with Antonio Sole in Round 7. 12 out 16 Indian players advance to the Quarter-Finals of FIDE Online World Cadets and Youth Rapid Championships. Nihal, Iniyan, Priyanka Nutakki, Jyothsna, Rakshitta, Gukesh, Pranav V, Aditya, Savitha, Anupam, Mrinmoy and Shreya Hipparagi are the twelve players who have advanced to the Quarter-Finals. Only Gukesh and Pranav will face each other in the Under-14 Open which means only one Indian player will advance to the next stage in that group. Jules Moussard beat overnight leader Vojtech Plat to join the four-way lead along with Ivan Cheparinov, Jaime Santos Latasa and Hans Niemann with 5.0/6 at the conclusion of the sixth round in VII Sunway Sitges International Open. Leon beat compatriot Souhardo to take his score to 4.0/6. He will now face FM Marc Carbonell Sancho in the seventh round. GM-elect IM Hans Niemann wins the second night of blitz tournament. 10 things that made the Super Juniors Cup 2020 special

The Super Juniors Cup 2020 was held from the 6th to the 10th of December 2020. 32 of the most talented youngsters of Indian chess took part in it. The total prize disbursed at the end of the event was a massive Rs.567,224. GM Nihal Sarin won the tournament and went back home richer by Rs.135,494. This was one of the biggest events ever to be held online in Indian chess. IM Sagar Shah takes you through the 10 things that made the Super Juniors Cup 2020 special.
