Chess Olympiad- A volunteer's perspective

31 days have passed since the Olympiad ended and it has been exactly 1 month since we (volunteers) officially ended our duties. Having only played chess as a mere time-pass for my whole life and watched it from afar as a spectator, never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I would get to see the masters of the game up close and be a part of the biggest event to be ever conducted in chess. How was it from a volunteer point of view? Let’s find out in this article.

Vidit Gujrathi and his visa troubles

Vidit Gujrathi is currently ranked no.5 in India with an Elo of 2710. The only classical tournaments that Vidit has played in 2022 are Tata Steel Masters, Prague Masters, FIDE Grand Prix and the Chess Olympiad. For a player of his rating it is quite important that he gets to play in more classical events so that he can work on his Elo. Currently for Vidit, it is not the tournament invitations that are causing an issue. He has an invitation from a strong tournament in the USA. However, his problem is that there is no appointment for the USA visa before July 2023. And the tournament starts from the 1st of November 2022. Get to know more about Vidit Gujrathi's visa issues.

Sakshi Chitlange Golden in BRICS Games 2022, Bronze for Mitrabha, Ilamparthi and Bhagyashree

National Women 2022 runner-up, WIM Sakshi Chitlange clinched the Gold for India in Above 19 Women section at BRICS Games 2022. She scored an unbeaten 5.5/6 and finished 1.5 points ahead of the field. GM Mitrabha Guha, Ilamparthi A R and 31st National Under-18 Girls champion, WFM Bhagyashree Patil won a Bronze medal each in Above 19 Men, Under-18 Men and Women section respectively. The entire event was held online on chess.com in a double round-robin format. The time control was 15 minutes + 5 seconds increment. Participants were from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The tournament was organized by Chinese Chess Association from 1st to 3rd September 2022.

MPL Indian Chess Tour 2022 leg 3 R1-4: Vidit and Aravindh in the lead

Vidit Gujrathi and Aravindh Chithambaram emerged as the coleaders after the first day of MPL Indian Chess Tour leg 3. Both of them won three games and drew one, finishing the day at 10/12 each. They are closely followed by Mitrabha Guha and Nihal Sarin at 8/12 each. Apart from these four, Leon Luke Mendonca has also made an unbeaten start. WGM Divya Deshmukh scored her sole win of the day against GM B Adhiban. The third leg of MPL Indian Chess Tour will conclude on 12th September 2022. Aravindh won the previous leg in June. Can he make it two in-a-row? Round 5 starts today at 3:30 p.m. IST.

Gowrichander wins Nagpur Below 1600 Rating Tournament 2022

Gowrichander U won Nagpur Below 1600 Rating tournament. Six players scored 8/9 each. Out of them, Gowrichander of Tamil Nadu won the tournament due to better tie-break score. Akshat Mahobiya and Saket Atul Kumar were placed second and third. They both remained undefeated. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹300000. Top three prizes were ₹51000 and a trophy, ₹30000 and ₹25000 each. The tournament was held between 14th and 16th August 2022 at Nagpur, Maharashtra. Sinquefield Cup 2022 R6: Wesley So ends Hans Niemann's unbeaten streak

Three games ended decisively in the sixth round of Sinquefield Cup 2022. Alireza Firouzja, Wesley So and Levon Aronian were the victors of the day. So picked up the fastest win of the event in 28 moves. Although, Ivan Sokolov was not impressed with the advisors of Firouzja. He felt that this was not his style. So maintained his sole lead 4/6. He ended Hans Niemann's undefeated streak. Aronian used his Olympiad preparation suggested by Robert Hess to beat the Najdorf specialist and reigning World Blitz champion, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave. Kushagra Mohan becomes the latest International Master of India

17-year-old CM Kushagra Mohan became the latest International Master of India on 25th August 2022. The Telangana boy scored his final IM-norm at 28th Abu Dhabi Masters, about 50 days after he scored his second IM-norm at Serbia Masters 2022 in July. He also crossed 2400 at the same event in Novi Sad, Serbia. His live rating is now 2426. The teenager is three GM-norms and 74 Elo rating points away from becoming India's next GM. The boy's quest for Grandmaster title continues at Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Trophy GM Open which starts in 11 days. Mithun Anand V wins 1st Cademic International Rating Open 2022

20th seeded Mithun Anand V and Goutham Krishna H scored an unbeaten 7.5/8 each. Mithun won the 1st Cademic International Rating Open on tie-breaks, the reigning National Under-12 Open champion, Goutham was placed second. Top seed of the event, Hrithickkesh Pr scored 7/8, edged past the remaining four at the same score, to secure third place. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹300000. Top three prizes were ₹40000, ₹30000 and ₹20000 along with a trophy each. Hans Niemann - "This is a targeted attack"

The Chess world was taken by storm when young Grandmaster Hans Niemann defeated Magnus Carlsen in the 3rd round of the Sinquefield Cup 2022. It was an extremely impressive performance due to 2 reasons: Hans beating Magnus with the Black pieces, and outplaying Magnus in the endgame! However, things took a different turn when the World Champion Magnus Carlsen withdrew from the tournament with a cryptic tweet. On the same day, a 15-minute security check was added before the rounds began. The whole chess world started speculating and rumors started spreading that Hans had cheated. After the 5th round game against GM Leinier Dominguez Perez, Hans Niemann spoke to Grandmaster Alejandro Ramirez in the post-game interview where he defended himself against rumors of cheating, his accent, and much more. ONGC Sports Scholarship Scheme 2022-23

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) has announced their sports scholarship scheme today. The scholarship is valid for any chess player between the age of 10 and 25 years. A total of six scholarships will be granted based on merit to both men and women in three different categories. Economically Weaker Section will be given a preference. Applications will only be accepted via online methods. Last date for submission of application is 21st September. Sayantan Das wins 1st Bella Italia Masters 2022, Diptayan third

IM Sayantan Das scored 7/9 to win 1st International Festival Bella Italia of Lignano Sabbiadoro Masters 2022. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Four players - IM Francesco Sonis (ITA), GM Diptayan Ghosh, GM Visakh N R and Aaron Deepak (USA) scored 6.5/9 each. They were placed second to fourth according to tie-breaks. Only Diptayan remained undefeated among the top ten finishers. WIM Mounika Akshaya was the sole woman among the top ten. She scored 5.5/9 to finish ninth. The top three prizes were €1500 and a trophy, €1000 and €600 each respectively. Sayantan's rating is now 2489 which means he is 11 points away from becoming India's next Grandmaster.

Sinquefield Cup 2022 R5: Hans Niemann tells his story

All four games of the fifth round ended in draws at Sinquefield Cup 2022. Then Hans Niemann told his entire story in a post-match interview of various rumored allegations, Carlsen's withdrawal tweet which had insinuations, what Nakamura said on his stream, chess.com rescinding their invitation to the Global Championship, why his accent changes during interviews, how he only adapted unfair means as a 12-year-old and afterwards never cheated in any online game. He also mentioned that he never cheated in any over-the-board games in his career, being ready to play the rest of the tournament in any condition he is required to ensure zero electronic transmission to him. The Westbridge Anand Chess Academy (WACA) began in January 2021 with 5 mentees - Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa, Nihal, Vaishali and Raunak. It was a phenomenal opportunity for the youngsters as they would get a chance to train with the legend Vishy Anand and his team (Gajewski, Yusupov, Chanda and Gelfand). Two more players were added later on - Arjun Erigaisi and Leon Mendonca. All of these youngsters have performed phenomenally well in the last 18 months. That's the reason why WACA has organized an event in Bangalore on the 7th of September 2022 at 7 p.m to celebrate the achievements of these youngsters. Shubhi Gupta impressive at 2nd Aparna Dutta Memorial Rating Open 2022

Top two seeds of the tournament - GM Neuris Delgado Ramirez (PAR) and GM Cristhian Camilo Rios (COL) scored 9.5/10 each. Neuris won 2nd Aparna Dutta Memorial Rating Open on tie-breaks, Cristhian was placed second. Reigning National Under-12 Girls and National Amateur U-2000 Women champion, 11th seeded Shubhi Gupta secured third position. She scored an impressive 8/10. Abhrojyoty Nath also scored the same, he was placed fourth. Six out of top ten finishers were below 14 years of age. Total prize fund of the tournament was ₹275000.
