AICF bags Best National Sports Federation of the year at FICCI India Sports Awards 2022

On Saturday 26th November 2022, All India Chess Federation (AICF) won National Sports Federation of the Year award by Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) at FICCI India Sports Awards 2022 in New Delhi. GM FST R B Ramesh was awarded Sports Coach of the Year - Male. Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) who showed a huge support towards chess, won the Best Educational Institute Promoting Sports award. Tata Steel Chess India 2022 gets bigger and stronger

Tata Steel Chess India is the strongest Rapid and Blitz tournament to take place in India. After the successful completion of 44th Chess Olympiad and Asian Continental Championship, the next big event starts tomorrow at National Library of India in Kolkata. For the first time in the history of the sport, both men and women's section will have equal prize fund of US$ 41500. The five-day Rapid and Blitz tournament will feature 22 of the world's best including India's top players. Newly crowned World Fischer Random champion, Hikaru Nakamura, India no.2 and World no.23 D Gukesh, reigning World Rapid champion - Nodirbek Abdusattorov, new Asian Continental champion, R Praggnanandhaa, defending Tata Steel 2021 Rapid winner, Arjun Erigaisi, Olympiad Gold medalists - Anna Muzychuk, Mariya Muzychuk, Anna Ushenina, Oliwia Kiolbasa, Bronze medalists - Koneru Humpy, Harika Dronavalli, Vaishali R and Bhakti Kulkarni will be some of the participants. Annirudhha Potawad conquers 2nd ChessBase India Club Tournament 2022

Annirudhha Potawad scored 7/7 to become the winner of 2nd ChessBase India Club Tournament 2022. He finished a full point ahead of the competition. Jeet Shah and Nitin M Pai scored 6/7 each. They were placed second and third respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹10000. The top three prizes were ₹5000, ₹3000 and ₹2000 along with a trophy each. Fourth to eighth won 1-month ChessBase Premium Account subscription and a 10% discount coupon which can be used on ChessBase India shop. Sharan Rao dominates 2nd SCMA Rapid Rating Open 2022

Top seed of the tournament FM Sharan Rao scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 2nd SCMA Rapid Rating Open 2022. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Kaustuv Kundu and Pranav K P scored 8/9 each. They were placed second and third according to tie-breaks. FM Prasanna S, Raam Hemanth and FM Preetham R Sharma scored 8/9 each. Prasanna won the Blitz Open due to better tie-breaks. Raam and Preetham were adjudged second and third. The total prize fund for the Rapid Rating was ₹200000 and ₹40000 for the Blitz Open. Harshavardhan clinches Gold at Asian Junior 2022, Rakshitta Ravi Silver in Girls

IM Harshavardhan G B drew his final round game as it was enough to become Asian Junior 2022 champion. He scored an unbeaten 7/9, finished a half point ahead of the field to clinch the Gold and score a GM-norm. For the second consecutive year, an Indian player has won the Asian Junior title. The reigning National Junior Girls (Under-19) 2022 champion, WIM Rakshitta Ravi bagged a Silver in Classical and Bronze in Blitz event. She scored 7/9 and 6/9 respectively. WFM Bhagyashree Patil won Gold in the Blitz event scoring 7/9. Even a last round loss did not deter her championship hopes. The defending champion, IM Raahul V S made 6/9 to finish sixth. China becomes World Team Champion 2022, S L Narayanan wins Bronze

India drew both Small final duels against Spain 2-2. They lost the tie-breaks 1-3 and Spain won the Bronze medal. Thus, India missed a medal and finished fourth for the third consecutive time. GM S L Narayanan's consistent performance earned him an individual Bronze medal on Board no.3. He performed at 2716. China defeated Uzbekistan 2.5-1.5 in both duels. They won the Gold medal by remaining undefeated throughout the tournament and without needing to play tie-breaks in the knockout stage. Uzbekistan had to settle for Silver. FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Championships 2022: Registration is open

The FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Championship 2022 will take place in Almaty, Kazakhstan from 25th to 31st December at the Baluan Sholak Sports Palace. The arena has hosted many international sports competitions as well as live concerts and various shows. Check out the details to find all info about registration. Total US$ 1 million prize fund will be given to prize winners, $700000 for the Open championships and $300000 in the Blitz championships. Apart from the Rating criteria, GM Arjun Erigaisi, GM Aravindh Chithambaram and WGM Divya Deshmukh are also eligible for Open and Women championships by virtue of winning the National Senior, National Rapid and Blitz and National Women championships earlier this year. World Team 2022 SF: Uzbekistan wins and eyes another Gold

India drew with Uzbekistan in the first duel of the Semifinal. The 44th Chess Olympiad Gold medalist team, Uzbekistan won the second duel by a minimum margin 2.5-1.5 to advance to the Finals. They will face China to battle for the Gold. GM S L Narayanan showcased his consistency once again as he defeated GM Shamsiddin Vokhidov on both occassions. GM Vidit Gujrathi and GM Nihal Sarin lost and drew a game each. On the fourth board, GM Sethuraman S P lost in the first duel and GM K Sasikiran drew in the second. P Shyam Nikhil clinches Commonwealth Chess Championship 2022

IM P Shyam Nikhil defeated the top seed GM Aravindh Chithambaram in the final round to win Commonwealth Chess Championship 2022. Shyam became the first IM in about 13 years to win Gold at this event. IM Enrique Paciencia (SGP) was the last IM to win the event in 2009. GM Mitrabha Guha drew with GM Visakh N R to finish second 7/9, a half point behind the champion. GM-elect IM Pranesh M edged past IM Vignesh N R to claim the Bronze. The legend WIM Bhagyashree Thipsay won the Senior (Above 60) category scoring 5/9. Asian Junior 2022 R8: Harshavardhan on the verge of winning Gold

IM Harshavardhan G B scored an emphatic victory over Eric Labog Jr. (PHI) in the penultimate round. He has increased his lead by a full point 6.5/8 in the Asian Junior Chess Championships 2022 Open. IM Neelash Saha and IM Utsab Chatterjee are among the pack of five players at 5.5/8 each. In the Girls section, both previous round leaders, WIM Rakshitta Ravi and WIM Ngoc Thuhy Duong (VIE) won their respective games to move to 6.5/8 each. Harshavardhan needs a draw in the final round to clinch the Gold, while Rakshitta must-win her last game and hope everything works out in her favor to clinch the Gold. World Team 2022 QF: India knocks out France in tie-breaks

India defeated France 2.5-1.5 in the Quarterfinal tie-breaks to advance to the Semifinals of World Team Chess Championship 2022. Vidit Gujrathi set the tone for the day as he defeated the reigning World Blitz champion, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave on top board in the first duel. S L Narayanan won against Laurent Fressinet convincingly, while Nihal Sarin and K Sasikiran drew their respective games. France retorted in the second duel with same score 1-3. Thus, tie-breaks was enforced where Vidit drew with MVL, Nihal and S L Narayanan scored key victories to ensure India advances to the next stage. Muthaiah Al triumphs at Tirumala Tirupati Rapid Rating Open 2022

Top seed of the tournament IM Muthaiah Al, Saranya Y and FM Karthik Rajaa scored 8/9 each. Muthaiah clinched Tirumala Tirupati Rapid Rating Open 2022 due to better tie-breaks. Saranya and Karthik were adjudged second and third. Both Muthaiah and Karthik remained undefeated. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹500000. The top three prizes were ₹35000, ₹21000 and ₹15000 each. A total of 226 players took part in this event. This was Muthaiah's first Rapid Rating Open triumph of the year, second overall. Earlier, he won Radnickichess GM Round Robin 2 and earned his maiden GM-norm in July this year.

Asian Junior 2022 R1-7: Harshavardhan and Rakshitta in the lead

IM Harshavardhan G B defeated IM Utsab Chatterjee to emerge sole leader at Asian Junior Chess Championship 2022 Open after round 7. WIM Rakshitta Ravi won against WFM Mitra Asgharzadeh (IRI) to join the lead with WIM Ngoc Thuy Duong Bach (VIE). Both are at 5.5/7 each. Three players are trailing Harshavardhan with a 5/7 score. WFM Bhagyashree Patil and IM Avinash Ramesh won Silver and Bronze medal in the Rapid event in Under-18 Girls and Open category respectively. World Team 2022 R5: Vidit and S L Narayanan propel India to the Quarterfinals

USA suffered a crushing defeat against India 1-3 in the fifth round of World Team Chess Championship 2022. Vidit Gujrathi and S L Narayanan scored emphatic victories over Hans Niemann and Varuzhan Akobian respectively. Both wins were scored with the black pieces. While Vidit launched a solid attack on the kingside, Narayanan showed his fantastic positional understanding. Nihal Sarin drew his game comfortably and Sethuraman S P escaped all difficulties to salvage a draw. India will face France in the Quarterfinals in a duel starting at 6:30 and 9:30 p.m. IST today. Mrittika Mallick is one of the most talented youngsters of Indian chess. She became the national under-14 champion in 2022. This allowed her to participate at the Asian Championships 2022 where she won two medals for India and also finished 4th at the World Youth Championships under-14.
