14-year-old Arvind Iyer is the winner of Surya Trophy Rapid Rating Open 2023
14-year-old Arvind Iyer scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win Surya Trophy Rapid Rating Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field. The teenager had a half point lead going into the final round. He drew with the eventual runner-up Maulik Raval to become a clear champion. Apart from Maulik, Shaikh Sohil, Ankit Chudasama and Shailesh Rawal also scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed third to fifth respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹100000. The top three prizes were ₹11000, ₹9000 and ₹7000 along with a trophy each. Arvind's first rating tournament triumph
The 14-year-old teenager from Kalyan, Maharashtra, has won a few tournaments. However, this is his rating open tournament victory. Four players - Arvind Iyer, Maulik Raval, Shailesh Rawal and Ajay Virwani remained undefeated among the top ten finishers.
A total of 193 players participated in this two-day nine-round Swiss league Rapid Rating tournament. The tournament was organized by Divyam Foundation on 18th to 19th February 2023 at Hotel Surya in Vadodara, Gujarat. The time control for the event was 20 minutes + 10 seconds increment.
