1st Bikaner GM Open R1: Swayham and Pritam score big upsets

by Shahid Ahmed - 02/10/2022

13-year-old Swayham P Das scored a big win over GM Laxman R R in 1st Bikaner GM Open 2022. Experience player, Pritam Singh also scored an upset victory over GM Duc Hoa Nguyen (VIE) in just 22 moves. Hriday Panchal had a good opportunity to hold GM Deepan Chakkravarthy to a draw. 12-year-old Nirnay Garg held veteran IM Anup Deshmukh to a draw. The tournament witnesses the participation of 75 players including 10 GMs, 7 IMs and 4 WIMs from 13 countries across the world including India in the Category A. The total prize fund of the tournament is ₹3000000, ₹2000000 in Category A and ₹1000000 in Category B. Round 2 starts today at 9:30 a.m. IST. Photo: Aditya Sur Roy

Almost a close tournament

The Category A has only 75 players taking part including 10 GMs, five rated above 2500, the tournament average rating being 2048. These all statistics are generally seen in a close tournament.

Hriday - Deepan: 0-1

Hriday Panchal (1970) had a good opportunity to draw with GM Deepan Chakkravarthy (2451).

Position after 55...Nxa5

The above position is a bishop vs knight endgame. However, that does not change the golden rule of pawn ending that king should be ahead of the pawn. Here also White needed to play 36.Kg4 to save the day, whereas 36.g4 enables Black to win.

Laxman - Swayham: 0-1

GM Laxman R R (2378) got a pleasant position in the middlegame. In fact, he had a decent advantage against Swayham P Das (1902).

Position after 38...exd5

39.exd5 maintains upper hand for White. However, 39.Nxd5 Ne5 hinders White's own progress. Black managed to equalize the position soon.

Position after 49.Ne3

While 49.Ne7 would have forced the exchange of a minor piece, 49.Ne3 completely turns things in Black's favor. The teenager had no trouble figuring out White's positional mistake and light square weakness on the kingside. Find out how Swayham seized his opportunity.

Pritam - Duc Hoa: 1-0

GM Duc Hoa Nguyen (VIE, 2360) played some bizarre moves early in the opening against Pritam Singh (1899). Perhaps the Grandmaster took his opponent lightly.

Position after 17...Rb6

17...Rd8 would have maintained some kind of semblance to the position. 17...Rb6 immediately ends the game after 18.Nd5. Black continued 18...Bd6 19.c5 Bxc5 20.Nxc7+ Kf8 21.Nxa8 and Black has zero compensation for the rook.
