Abhijeet Gupta on the verge of winning 1st Bikaner GM Open 2022
GM Abhijeet Gupta defeated FM Ram Aravind L N to be one step closer to winning 1st Bikaner GM Open 2022. Playing with white pieces, Ram Aravind was determined to make the most out of his opportunity. It was evident that he was playing for a win. He created opportunities for himself but alas he made a positional mistake which allowed the well-experienced GM to get back in the game and claim the full point. This loss did not deter the teenager's norm chances. He earned his final IM-norm and now requires to fulfil the rating requirement to become India's next International Master. Abhijeet will face Boris Savchenko in the final round. A win makes him a clear champion, while a draw might also be enough to win via tie-breaks. Final round 10 starts today at 10 a.m. IST. Ram Aravind L N earns his final IM-norm
FM Ram Aravind L N brought his best against GM Abhijeet Gupta and fought valiantly for a full point. The 18-year-old showed how to take the game to his stronger opponent and played some fearless chess. Some days the result does not show the effort that has been put up. It was one of those days.
Ram Aravind - Abhijeet: 0-1
FM Ram Aravind L N (2218) gave his all against GM Abhijeet Gupta (2607). He made a thematic bishop sacrifice for a couple of pawns in the Sicilian Najdorf.
12.Bxe6 ideas generally work better when the bishop is at e7, so fxe6 Nxe6 has a threat on the g7-pawn. That was not the case here 12...fxe6 13.Nxe6 Nf6 14.Nxf8 Rxf8 15.Rxd6 White got a third pawn for the piece. After a few moves, White got a fourth pawn too and things were getting interesting until White made a positional mistake.
27.Re1 with the idea of pushing the e-pawn would have been a better choice for White than 27.Rd2 which allowed Ne3 and things started falling apart for White. This loss did not affect White's norm chances, so that is a good takeaway for him.
