1st Bikaner GM Open R7: Abhijeet Gupta is on a roll

by Shahid Ahmed - 07/10/2022

Abhijeet Gupta continues his momentum at 1st Bikaner GM Open 2022. He defeated GM Duc Hoa Nguyen (VIE) in seventh round. The Vietnamese GM blundered in time trouble in the endgame where he initially had the upper hand. Abhijeet moves to 6.5/7. IM Arash Tahbaz (IRI) defeated GM Michal Krasenkow (POL) to remain in the hunt 6/7. Ten players are at 5/7. IM Anuj Shrivatri, FM Ram Aravind L N and Dhananjay S are the only three Indians among them. Ram Aravind had a great opportunity against the top seed, GM Levan Pantsulaia (GEO). He was unable to make the most out of it. Round 8 starts today at 2:30 p.m. IST. Photo: Aditya Sur Roy

14-year-old Arnav beats Neverov

IM Nitin S suffered his second consecutive loss of the event. It was against Dhananjay S in the seventh round. CM Aaditya Dhingra drew with IM Rajesh Vav. 14-year-old Arnav Maheshwari defeated GM Valeriy Neverov (UKR).

Abhijeet - Duc Hoa: 1-0

GM Duc Hoa Nguyen (VIE, 2360) was better for the significant part of double rook and knight endgame against GM Abhijeet Gupta (2607).

Position after 35.Rb8

Black has an extra pawn on the kingside, a5 will also fall soon. Black's pieces are much better placed overall than White's. Black should not lose this endgame, right? Well, Black did. 35...f5 would have been the right way to continue here, playing on his advantage. Instead, he went for a passive 35...Nc7?!

Position after 42.g4

White posed a simple question with 42.g4. Black should have exchanged the pawns 42...hxg4 43.Nxg4 Rfc5 and there is no checkmate threat. Maximum White can force a draw by perpetual check, which Black should be okay with. In time trouble, Duc blundered 42...Rf4?? 43.gxh5 Kf6 44.Ng4+ and suddenly White has a powerful passed pawn on h5 which Black cannot stop.

Ram Aravind - Pantsulaia: 0.5-0.5

FM Ram Aravind L N (2218) launched a very nice attack on his opponent GM Levan Pantsulaia's (2609) kingside.

Position after 21...fxg5

The game continued 22.Bg7 Rxf4 23.Rhf1 e5 24.Qg2 g4 25.Rxf4 exf4 26.Qf1 d5 and White's attack dwindled. 22.fxg5 immediately is not a good idea as e5 blocks the bishop's pawn and opens his own. 22.Rhf1 would have kept things going instead.

Savchenko - Deepan: 1-0

GM Deepan Chakkravarthy (2451) suffered a heartbreaking loss against GM Boris Savchenko (2550).

Position after 30.Bc7

30.Bc7 is nothing but a scare tactic as Black can easily take it. 30...Qxc7 31.Qxe8 c3 Black is completely winning now.

Position after 35.Be6

35.Be6 is a desperado, a final attempt by White to stir up trouble. 35...fxe6 36.Qxg6+ now Black needed to play Qg7 37.Qxe6+ Kh7 and White no longer has much to go on. Instead, Black played 36...Bg7 37.Qxe6+ and things fell part quickly after Kh8.
