29th of August 2020 is celebrated as the National Sports Day in India. On this day, the Indian team played out of their skins to beat Poland and reach the finals of the FIDE Online Olympiad 2020. It was not a straightforward victory for India as we lost the first match with a score of 4-2. However, in the second match we made a resounding comeback with 4.5-1.5 The match went into an Armageddon and it was the super-woman of Indian chess Koneru Humpy who came to the fore and delivered! India have not just qualified to the finals, they have also assured themselves of a silver medal. Now between the Indian team and the Gold medal lies the formidable Russia. Armenia withdraws as India moves into Semi-finals of Online Olympiad 2020; will face Poland

Team India advanced to the semi-finals of the FIDE Online Olympiad 2020 beating Armenia. But the way the match ended was quite unfortunate. India won the first match against Armenia with a score of 3.5-2.5. Pairings for the second match were made. It was at this point that Arrmenia made an appeal first to the arbiters, then to the appeals committee. Their appeal was turned down. At this point the Armenian team decided to withdraw from the tournament. India was given a win and we advance to the semi-finals. What exactly happened. Few days before his impressive performance at Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour Finals, Nakamura crossed 500K followers on twitch which means his reach to the general audience through the sport chess definitely increased by that much. Online Olympiad Day 3: India beats China, tops Pool A and is through to the Quarter-Finals

What a brilliant day it was for team India at the FIDE Online Olympiad 2020. We began trailing China with one point. Two Asian superpowers notched up one victory after another before they clashed against each other in the final round of the Group stage. A lot was at stake as the winner would get a direct berth in the Quarter finals and would save time and energy of playing in the pre quarter finals. The Chinese team with Ding Liren, Yu Yangyi, Hou Yifan and Ju Wenjun looked invincible, but the junior boards were the ones where their weakness lay. Praggnanandhaa and Divya rose up to the occasion to give India a resounding 4-2 victory over China and a direct berth in the Quarter-finals!

Online Olympiad Day one: Flawless show by Team India

The excitement was at its peak as India took on three teams - Zimbabwe, Vietnam and Uzbekistan on day one of the FIDE Online Olympiad 2020. A lot of people had taken leave from work to follow the games live and the online viewership of live commentary reached 30,000 concurrent viewers at one point! That shows how popular chess is becoming in this lockdown. And team India lived up to the expectations as we won all three matches and are now leading the group with 6.0/6 along with China and Germany. Carlsen wins Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour Finals

Carlsen-Nakamura finals will be epic - anyone could have guessed that but one thing very few could guess correctly would be how epic would it be or if it would go down to Armageddon. Carlsen won the Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour in a fantastic manner. The finals witnessed back and forth games and there were zero short draws. Both players knew that they would have to push their limits and drive things in a top gear, anything less will just not be enough. The entire chess universe was buzzing about this epic finals and the World champion surely had a successful tour in all stretch of the imagination - as a player, organizer and promoter of the game.
