Norway Chess R7: Rapport overcomes Karjakin, moves to World no.6

Exactly a week after entering the World top 10 in the live ratings list, Richard Rapport has moved up to World no.6 now. He roared his way to the top by defeating Karjakin in their Classical encounter in the seventh round of Norway Chess 2021. The tournament boasts the field of a world champion, his challenger to the world championship, a former world championship challenger and world's best junior. Rapport has showed his true strength, creative play can still topple the best the world has to offer and climb the ranks at the same time. FIDE Online Olympiad 2021 SF: USA eliminates India

India made a brilliant start at the Semifinals by winning the first duel 5-1 against the USA in the FIDE Online Olympiad 2021. No one could have fathomed that they would not be able to advance after such a great start, but that is sport. USA made a commendable comeback by winning the second duel 4-2, forcing tie-breaks which they won 1.5-4.5 with a huge margin. Anish Giri dominates Tolstoy Cup, performs at over 3000

Anish Giri started Tolstoy Cup scoring five consecutive victories on the first day against Gelfand, Alekseenko, Matlakov, Vitiugov and Abdusattorov. He finished day 1 at 5.0/5, with a massive 2.5 points lead over the competition. The Dutch no.1 finished the event with a score of 8.0/9 and 2.5 points ahead of others, maintaining the difference till the very end. He performed at 3003, gained 55.2 Elo rating points, moving from world no.35 to world no.8 in the live rapid ratings list. This was definitely one of the best performance of Giri's career so far, which he even tweeted after the event in his own humorous way by quoting a tweet by his compatriot and protégé Max Warmerdam. Norway Chess R6: Karjakin gets his revenge against Nepomniachtchi

Sergey Karjakin defeated the World Championship Challenger - Ian Nepomniachtchi in Armageddon in the sixth round of Norway Chess 2021. One could not ask for a better way to start a week than to beat the world champion on Sunday and then beat his challenger on Monday. Rapport and Carlsen won their Classical games against Tari and Firouzja respectively. The Hungarian extended his sole lead by three points from his nearest pursuant, Nepomniachtchi 9.5/18, closely followed by Carlsen 9.0/18 and Karjakin 8.5/18. FIDE Online Olympiad 2021 QF: India vanquishes Ukraine to advance to the Semifinals

India has made it to the Semifinals of FIDE Online Olympiad 2021 with a dominant show. India won the first duel but Ukraine made a comeback in the second one. However, in the tie-break, India showed who is the stronger team as they defeated Ukraine 5-1 without losing a single game. Adhiban solved the Shevchenko problem, Harika won all three of her games, Vaishali got her revenge and Nihal won as his opponent was having technical issues. Vidit and Humpy scored crucial draws. Praggnanandhaa obliterated his opponent in the second duel in what could arguably be the best game of the day. Norway Chess R5: Karjakin beats Carlsen in Classical first time since 2016

Sergey Karjakin defeated Magnus Carlsen for the first time since their World Championship match in 2016, in the exact same round as Duda ended the world champion's unbeaten streak last year in the very same event. Karjakin moved to the third place 7.0/15, a full point ahead Carlsen 6.0/15. Rapport suffered his first proper loss of the event against Nepomniachtchi in Armageddon, however he is still in the sole lead 9.5/15, followed by the current world championship challenger 8.5/15. Gukesh triumphs 4th Concello de Carballo Clasico

Starting out as the top seed of the event, GM D Gukesh scored 8.0/9, remained undefeated and won 4th Concello de Carballo Clasico in Carballo, Spain. This was Gukesh's first over-the-board triumph since he resumed playing otb tournaments back in July at FIDE World Cup. He also played a simul exhibition against 16 players of various age groups. His father, Dr. Rajini Kanth also had a great tournament. He was playing on fourth board in the final round, a win would have given him a tie for the fifth place. Leinier Dominguez clinches Champions Showdown 2021 Chess 9LX

Leinier Dominguez started the final day with a loss against Shankland in Champions Showdown 2021 Chess 9LX. He drew with Vachier-Lagrave next and defeated Aronian in the final round to finish clear first 6.0/9. So, Vachier-Lagrave and Shankland tied for the second place at 5.5/9 each respectively. Kasparov, who was having another fantastic day after beating Svidler and making a draw with Nakamura, losing to MVL in the last round cost him a podium finish. He still managed to finish fifth with 5.0/9 and once again showed the world that if you take out the opening theory, he can still go against the best the world has to offer. Norway Chess R4: Carlsen beats Nepomniachtchi in Armageddon

The most anticipated match between Carlsen and Nepomniachtchi saw the world champion prevail the challenger in Armageddon in the fourth round of Norway Chess 2021. This definitely gives the world no.1 a psychological edge. They will face each other one more time in the final round of this tournament before their world championship match in November. Rapport scored his second Classical victory of the event to increase his sole lead 8.5/12. Today is a rest day. FIDE Online Olympiad 2021 R7-9: India tops Pool B, advances to the Quarterfinals

India topped the Pool B by scoring 16.0/18 to advance to the Quarterfinals. They finished a full point ahead of Hungary 15.0/18. Team India started the day with emphatic victories over Hungary and Moldova. It was Slovenia who managed to hold India to a second draw in the group stage. Vidit and Praggnanandhaa won both of their games. Anand, Humpy and Nihal won a game each. Harikrishna, Bhakti and Savitha suffered a loss each respectively. Champions Showdown 2021 Chess 9LX seems to be the event where Kasparov is going to have a great comeback. After scoring a modest 1.0/3 on the first day, Kasparov wrecked through competition and scored 2.5/3 on the second day. His victims were Shankland and Aronian. The former world champion's only draw of the day was against previous day leader, Caruana who finished the day at sole second place 4.0/6. Leinier scored a hat-trick of wins to gain sole lead 4.5/6. Norway Chess R3: Rapport misses his chance against Carlsen

Richard Rapport's strategy almost worked against Carlsen in the third round of Norway Chess 2021. He wanted to play Armageddon with white pieces. After making a quick draw against King's Indian, the Hungarian opted for reverse King's Indian himself. However, he missed his opportunity and allowed the world champion to escape with a draw. Speaking of missed opportunities, Firouzja and Tari also missed their winning chances against Karjakin and Nepomniachtchi respectively in Armageddon. Team India dominated the second day to ascend to the top of Pool B with 11.0/12. Hungary is also with the same points, but the Indian team has better tie-breaks as they scored more game points. Shenzhen China was annihilated by India as they suffered a 1-5 loss in the fourth round. India defeated Azerbaijan 4-2 in the fifth round. Belarus lost to India by a minimum margin 2.5-3.5 in the sixth round. Nihal and Bhakti won both of their games today. Anand and Vaishali scored a valuable 1.5/2 and 2.0/3. Champions Showdown 2021 Chess 9LX returns to over-the-board after last year it had to be conducted online due to the unprecedented Covid-19 pandemic. Fabiano Caruana scored an unbeaten 2.5/3 on the first day to take the sole lead. Vachier-Lagrave, Mamedyarov and Shankland are at shared second place 2.0/3. So started the day with a beautiful combination against MVL, then he survived a massive scare against Kasparov in the following round. Mamedyarov was the only player to score a win against Kasparov so far in the third round. Norway Chess R2: Carlsen overcomes the Tari turmoil

Magnus Carlsen was in quite a bit of a pickle against his compatriot Aryan Tari in their Classical encounter of the second round at Norway Chess 2021. The world champion somehow managed to steer his ship through troubled waters and salvage a draw. Tari lost the Armageddon. Karjakin also escaped with a draw in the Classical game against Rapport. They drew the Armageddon too, which allowed Rapport to win the match and stay in the lead 4.5/6. Nepomniachtchi surprised Firouzja with King's Gambit in Armageddon.
