MPL 58th National Senior R1-2: Maharashtra's Suyog Wagh and Kashish Jain score big upsets

Maharashtra's FM Suyog Wagh and Kashish Jain Manoj scored big victories over Tamil Nadu's GM Iniyan P and GM Vishnu Prasanna in Round 2 of MPL 58th National Senior Chess Championship. Kerala State Senior champion Chandar Raju forced the top seed of the tournament, GM B Adhiban to fight for 4.5 hours to earn his first point of the event. Harshit Pawar (DEL) and Rahul Gurung (SIK) scored upset victories over two-time Tamil Nadu State Senior champion IM Pranav V and Asian Junior 2021 Gold medalist IM Raahul V S respectively in Round 1. MPL 47th National Women R1-2: Mrittika Mallick stuns Bhakti Kulkarni

Mrittika Mallick continues her momentum after winning her maiden West Bengal State title five days ago. She defeated IM Bhakti Kulkarni (Goa) in the first round of MPL 47th National Women Championship 2022. The 13-year-old girl drew with WGM Kiran Manisha Mohanty (ODI) in the second round. In Round 2, WFM Kotepalli Sai Nirupama (AP), Telangana State Senior champion Sarayu Velpula, WB State Junior champion WCM Bristy Mukherjee  defeated WIM Rakshitta Ravi (TN), WIM Savitha Shri B (TN), WIM Priyanka K (TN) each respectively. Airthings Masters Final 1: Four exciting draws

Ian Nepomniachtchi and Magnus Carlsen played some exciting chess in the Finals of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Airthings Masters. All four games ended in draws. However, out of them, three games felt like could have a decisive result. Carlsen was winning in all three of them, although Nepomniachtchi had his chance in the most exciting game of the day, the second one. One cannot shake the feeling that the worldly events are certainly affecting the players. It is evident from their games. A winner will certainly be decided today. Samyak Dharewa and Mrittika Mallick win West Bengal State Sub-Junior Boys and Girls 2022

12-year-old Samyak Dharewa scored an unbeaten 6.0/7 to become the first player from Darjeeling district to win West Bengal State Sub-Junior 2022 Boys. Three more players scored 6.0/7. They are - Snehil Raj Singh, Ankit Ray and Niladri Banerjee. They were placed second to fourth respectively according to tie-breaks. Mrittika Mallick of Hooghly district clinched her maiden State title. She scored 6.5/7 and finished a full point ahead of the competition. Arhashirsha Biswas and Debapriya Manna secured second and third place respectively scoring 5.5/7. Top three received, ₹4000 and a winner's trophy, ₹3000 and ₹2500 cash prize each respectively. Airthings Masters SF: Magnus Carlsen set to face Ian Nepomniachtchi in the Finals

Ian Nepomniachtchi will face Magnus Carlsen in the Finals of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Airthings Masters. Both Nepomniachtchi and Carlsen took the minimum number of games to eliminate Esipenko and Artemiev. They won their respective Semifinals 2.5-0.5. They will be facing each other in the Finals for the first time since their world championship clash last November. Of course, online rapid cannot be considered a rematch for the world championship because the format and stakes are very much different. However, a clash of titans is sure to bring some excitement in the chess universe considering how clouded it is lately due to the worldly events. Finals start tonight at 10:30 p.m. IST. Adhiban gets top billing in MPL 58th National Senior Chess Championship

MPL 58th National Senior Chess Championship will be the first National championship to take place since the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted regular schedule in early 2020. The most coveted National championship will take place at Ganges Club, Kanpur from 25th February to 3rd March 2022. The total prize fund has been increased by 50% since the last over-the-board National Senior championship which took place in December 2019. B Adhiban is the top seed of the tournament, Tata Steel 2022 Challenger winner Arjun Erigaisi will be the second and five-times Commonwealth Gold medalist Abhijeet Gupta will be the third seed. 35th Cannes Chess Festival R1-4: Nihal scores with a brilliant display of attack

Nihal Sarin made an unbeaten start at 35th Cannes Chess Festival 2022. After starting the tournament with a win, he drew the next two games. It was a theoretical draw in the second round against FM Joseph Girel. FM Phileas Mathieu thwarted all attemps by Nihal for a breakthrough in the third round. The 17-year-old managed to get back to his winning ways in round 4 as he scored a very nice victory with a brilliant display of attack against WIM Andreaa Navrotescu. Airthings Masters QF: Vladislav Artemiev eliminates Ding Liren

Ian Nepomniachtchi, Magnus Carlsen and Andrey Esipenko - all three of them won their Quarterfinal matches convincingly. They defeated Vincent Keymer, Liem Quang Le and Eric Hansen respectively to advance to the Semifinals of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Airthings Masters. Ding Liren was on the brink of eliminating Vladislav Artemiev as he was 1.5-0.5 in their match. However, in a completely winning position, a crucial blunder in the third game cost the world no.3 dearly. It affected him in the following game as Artemiev won the fourth game, thus winning the match and saving himself from the elimination. Airthings Masters R13-15: Nepomniachtchi tops the Prelims

Eric Hansen brought an end to Ian Nepomniachtchi's 11-game unbeaten streak. The popular streamer beat the former world championship challenger in round 14 of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Airthings Masters. Alexandra Kosteniuk ended her 13-game losing streak by defeating Hansen in Round 14. The win is certainly a nice one for her, as the Canada no.3 defeated both Carlsen and Nepomniachtchi in this event. Praggnanandhaa defeated Vladislav Artemiev in the final round of the Prelims to end the event with a score 19.0/45. Aronian, Giri, Abdusattorov, Mamedyarov, Niemann and Kosteniuk are the remaining seven who were unable to advance to the Knockout stage. Quarterfinals start tonight at 10:30 p.m. IST. In the year 2019, he became National champion in all three formats - Classical, Rapid and Blitz. Aravindh is a very quiet person who generally keeps to himself. He only played seven otb tournaments last year including the FIDE World Cup 2021. In the year 2020, he was part of the Gold medal winning Indian team at the first FIDE Online Olympiad. Airthings Masters R9-12: Carlsen is down with Covid, still climbs to second spot

Ian Nepomniachtchi increased his unbeaten streak to eleven games at Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Airthings Masters. He defeated Kosteniuk, Niemann, Praggnanandhaa and drew with Artemiev and Liem on the second day to maintain his sole lead 27.0/36. Praggnanandhaa started the day with a draw against Abdusattorov, then he defeated Esipenko, lost to Nepomniachtchi and finished the day with a win over Kosteniuk. He moved to 12th position with 15.0/36. The 16-year-old prodigy needs to finish in top eight in the Prelims to advance to the Knockout stage. Round 13 starts tonight at 10:30 p.m. IST. Lalit Rohit wins First Saturday GM February 2022

GM Lalit Rohit is on a roll. He won his third tournament of the year 2022 and fourth consecutive Classical tournament since he won Thailand Chess Festival on 22nd December, last year. Then he won Vergani Cup 2022 and Marienbad Open in January 2022. After winning tournaments in Thailand, Italy and Czech Republic, India's 26th GM travelled to Hungary in Budapest where he won First Saturday GM February 2022 with an unbeaten 6.0/9. GM David Berczes (HUN) also scored the same, however Lalit clinched the championship due to better tie-breaks. He now has an unbeaten score of 27.0/36 in a total of four tournaments. Airthings Masters R5-8: Praggnanandhaa beats Magnus Carlsen for the very first time

Until yesterday, Vishy Anand and Pentala Harikrishna were the only two Indians ever to beat Magnus Carlsen in a tournament game. Praggnanandhaa changed that fact in the eighth round of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Airthings Masters. The 16-year-old boy from Chennai, scored an important victory over the world champion as the latter made a tactical error in the endgame. The prodigy ended the day the exact way he started his day, by winning his game. He scored 7.0/12 on Day 2, taking his overall score to 8.0/24. Nepomniachtchi has taken the lead 19.0/24, followed Ding Liren and Eric Hansen at 15.0/24 each. Carlsen's score is 13.0/24. Round 9 starts tonight at 10:30 p.m. IST.

Japan no.1 Tran Thanh Tu wins Western Tokyo Chess Championship 2022

Top two seeds CM Tran Thanh Tu and IM Shinya Kojima scored an unbeaten 3.5/4 at Western Tokyo Chess Championship 2022. However, Tu edged past Kojima on tie-breaks to clinch the championship. Kojima had to settle for the second place. Five players scored 3.0/4. Enju Sakai secured the third place due to better tie-breaks. Two of the strongest Japanese players played against each other in the final round and they secured the top two places. This was the first time Tachikawa Chess Club hosted a qualifier for the Japanese Championships. Airthings Masters R1-4: Ding Liren takes sole lead 10.0/12

World no.3 Ding Liren might have missed his second consecutive opportunity to qualify for the Candidates, the fire inside him still burns bright. He scored three wins and a draw to take sole lead 10.0/12 after round 4 of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Airthings Masters. He is closely followed by Nepomniachtchi who scored a hat-trick of wins after starting the day with a loss against Aronian. The World Championship 2021 Challenger defeated Carlsen for the first time since March 2021 in the fourth round, handing him his second consecutive defeat of the day.
