Lalit Rohit wins First Saturday GM February 2022

GM Lalit Rohit is on a roll. He won his third tournament of the year 2022 and fourth consecutive Classical tournament since he won Thailand Chess Festival on 22nd December, last year. Then he won Vergani Cup 2022 and Marienbad Open in January 2022. After winning tournaments in Thailand, Italy and Czech Republic, India's 26th GM travelled to Hungary in Budapest where he won First Saturday GM February 2022 with an unbeaten 6.0/9. GM David Berczes (HUN) also scored the same, however Lalit clinched the championship due to better tie-breaks. He now has an unbeaten score of 27.0/36 in a total of four tournaments. Airthings Masters R5-8: Praggnanandhaa beats Magnus Carlsen for the very first time

Until yesterday, Vishy Anand and Pentala Harikrishna were the only two Indians ever to beat Magnus Carlsen in a tournament game. Praggnanandhaa changed that fact in the eighth round of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Airthings Masters. The 16-year-old boy from Chennai, scored an important victory over the world champion as the latter made a tactical error in the endgame. The prodigy ended the day the exact way he started his day, by winning his game. He scored 7.0/12 on Day 2, taking his overall score to 8.0/24. Nepomniachtchi has taken the lead 19.0/24, followed Ding Liren and Eric Hansen at 15.0/24 each. Carlsen's score is 13.0/24. Round 9 starts tonight at 10:30 p.m. IST.

Japan no.1 Tran Thanh Tu wins Western Tokyo Chess Championship 2022

Top two seeds CM Tran Thanh Tu and IM Shinya Kojima scored an unbeaten 3.5/4 at Western Tokyo Chess Championship 2022. However, Tu edged past Kojima on tie-breaks to clinch the championship. Kojima had to settle for the second place. Five players scored 3.0/4. Enju Sakai secured the third place due to better tie-breaks. Two of the strongest Japanese players played against each other in the final round and they secured the top two places. This was the first time Tachikawa Chess Club hosted a qualifier for the Japanese Championships. Airthings Masters R1-4: Ding Liren takes sole lead 10.0/12

World no.3 Ding Liren might have missed his second consecutive opportunity to qualify for the Candidates, the fire inside him still burns bright. He scored three wins and a draw to take sole lead 10.0/12 after round 4 of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Airthings Masters. He is closely followed by Nepomniachtchi who scored a hat-trick of wins after starting the day with a loss against Aronian. The World Championship 2021 Challenger defeated Carlsen for the first time since March 2021 in the fourth round, handing him his second consecutive defeat of the day. Praggnanandhaa set to clash with Carlsen and world's best at Airthings Masters

Praggnanandhaa is quite familar with Meltwater Champions Chess Tour. Last year, he earned his way into the New in Chess Classic by winning the Polgar Challenge. In this season, Pragg once again earned his way into the entire Tour as a regular participant by winning the Julius Baer Challengers Chess Tour 2021. Andrey Esipenko, Hans Niemann, Vincent Keymer, World Rapid champions - Nodirbek Abdusattorov and Alexandra Kosteniuk will make their Tour debut. They will fight against the returning players - Magnus Carlsen, Ding Liren, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Anish Giri, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Jan-Krzysztof Duda, Liem Quang Le, Vladislav Artemiev and Eric Hansen. Vladislav Bakhmatsky wins 38th Cappelle la Grande Open, Nihal Sarin second

Nihal Sarin drew his last two games against the eventual champion IM Vladislav Bakhmatsky (UKR) and GM Martin Petrov (BUL). The draws in the first two rounds affected his tie-breaks. It was later recovered a lot by scoring five consecutive victories. Nihal tried too hard in the last round which almost cost him the game, but he somehow managed to split the point. Thus he managed to secure the second position and his opponent, Petrov was placed third according to the tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was €12000. Utsab Chatterjee and Samriddhaa Ghosh are West Bengal State Senior 2022 champions

Top seed of the tournament, Utsab Chatterjee scored an unbeaten 7.0/8 to win West Bengal State Senior Open 2022. Arpan Das also finished with the same score 7.0/8. Utsab edged past Arpan due to better tie-breaks. Three players scored 6.5/8. They are - Arindam Mukherjee, Bishal Basak and Agnivo Chakraborty. They were placed third to fifth respectively according to tie-breaks. Samriddhaa Ghosh clinched the championship in the Women's category. She scored 6.0/8 and won her career's second State Women's title. Top three received, ₹12000 and a winner's trophy, ₹9000 and ₹7000 cash prize each respectively. Invincible Nakamura wins FIDE Berlin GP 2022, his first Classical tournament in over 27 months

Hikaru Nakamura was the odds-on favorite going into the tie-breaks of FIDE Berlin GP 2022 Finals. The last time he lost a conventional Rapid game in an over-the-board tournament was against Alexei Shirov at World Rapid 2019 on 26th December 2019 in Round 4. If you are wondering how Nakamura fared in his last otb event - he remained undefeated at World Rapid 2021 for 13 rounds. As Nakamura said in the post-match interview, playing Classical chess after more than two years keeps things fresh. He is at a much happier place, being not concerned about the result allows him to play chess and not get into boring draws. 38th Cappelle la Grande Open R6-7: Nihal Sarin joins the lead 6.0/7

When Nihal Sarin picks up the pace, you know he has hopped on the bullet train. On the fifth day of 38th Cappelle la Grande Open, Nihal demolished GM Daniel Dardha (BEL) and IM Anatole Vlachos (GRE). Both victories were convincing ones. While the Belgian was unable to assess the intensity of Nihal's attack correctly, the Greek just sacrificed his pawns and imploded in the Dutch defense. For the first time in this event, Nihal is in the lead with IM Vladislav Bakhmatsky (UKR). The second game was a relatively shorter compared to the first one but an exciting one nevertheless. The FIDE Berlin GP 2022 winner will be decided in tie-breaks. When Aronian is here to excite the audience and themselves, Nakamura is there to play some interesting chess, one can certainly anticipate some more fantastic chess to finish the Berlin GP. Both players are not so concerned about results as much as playing a good game. Make no mistake about the stakes though. Apart from the first prize of €24000, the winner will also get 13 GP points which will allow him to be one step closer to earning the final Candidates 2022 spot. 38th Cappelle la Grande Open R1-5: Nihal's incredible king walk

Nihal Sarin had a relatively slow start at 38th Cappelle la Grande International Open. Even for the world-class players in any sport, it takes a bit of time to overcome jet lag and get themselves adjusted to a new setting and environment. He drew the first two rounds, and then he won the next three games. The hat-trick win was against IM Piotr Nguyen (POL) in Round 5 where Nihal made an incredible king walk in the endgame to earn himself a victory. Nihal is now just a half point behind the leaders - GM Daniel Dardha (BEL), IM Vladislav Bakhmatsky (UKR) and IM Jakub Kosakowski (POL) 4.5/5. The first game of the FIDE Berlin GP 2022 Finals between Hikaru Nakamura and Levon Aronian was an exciting one. It had all the action, dram and tension. Ziaur Rahman wins Al Mahmud Memorial Probashi Rating 2022, Arpan Das second

Second seeded, Bangladesh's legendary GM Ziaur Rahman scored an unbeaten 8.0/9 and finished a full point ahead of the competition to win Al Mahmud Memorial Probashi Rating. Five players scored 7.0/9. Arpan Das secured second position according to tie-breaks. GM Abdullah Al Rakib, IM Abu Sufian Shakil, CM Nayem Haque and Anata Choudhury were placed third to sixth according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was Tk 331000 (approx. ₹2.91 lacs). The winner received Tk 75500, Tk 50000 for the Runner-up and Tk 30000 was awarded for the second runner-up. Berlin GP: Undefeated Aronian and Nakamura advance to the Finals

Levon Aronian and Hikaru Nakamura continues their unbeaten streak at FIDE Berlin GP to advance to the Finals. Both of them have played fantastic in the event so far. While Aronian had a relatively smooth ride to the Finals, the Speed King, Nakamura almost was on the brink of elimination against Esipenko. The finalists drew their respective games against Leinier Dominguez Perez and Richard Rapport with ease. It will be interesting to see which of the two player's undefeated streak comes to an end at the Finals. Who do you think will win the Berlin GP - Aronian or Nakamura? Today is a rest day.
