Berlin GP: Undefeated Aronian and Nakamura advance to the Finals

Levon Aronian and Hikaru Nakamura continues their unbeaten streak at FIDE Berlin GP to advance to the Finals. Both of them have played fantastic in the event so far. While Aronian had a relatively smooth ride to the Finals, the Speed King, Nakamura almost was on the brink of elimination against Esipenko. The finalists drew their respective games against Leinier Dominguez Perez and Richard Rapport with ease. It will be interesting to see which of the two player's undefeated streak comes to an end at the Finals. Who do you think will win the Berlin GP - Aronian or Nakamura? Today is a rest day. In a few years from now India's 73rd GM Bharath Subramaniyam will be a world class GM. How can we be so sure? Well, that's because the boy became an IM at the age of 11 years and 8 months and a GM at 14 years and 2 months. In his journey from IM to GM, he had 16 months without playing a single event! But it's not only his ratings and titles which convince us of a bright future. It's his playing style, his ability to engage in bold calculations throwing cautions to the wind. Bharath's support team is beautifully made up with a lot of people happily contributing to the youngster's success story and a firm support of the family. Berlin GP: Aronian and Nakamura move closer to the Finals

Levon Aronian and Hikaru Nakamura defeated Leinier Dominguez Perez and Richard Rapport respectively to win the first game in the FIDE Berlin GP Semifinals. Both of them are still undefeated in the event so far. It is very likely they will face each other in the Finals unless Leinier and Rapport win their must-win games today. Nakamura showed his sharp play against Rapport to make things messy in the endgame, which was quite complex for a human to defend precisely. Chess Tournament in a Café in Galleria Market, Gurgaon

Chess tournament at a cafe/restaurant is quite a common practice in the European countries. However, it is not so common here in India. Pranav Arora has taken it upon himself to change that notion. He launched a cafe named Tiny Tuscan in Gurgaon as he craved for Panini which had a dearth in the Indian market. His love for chess got rekindled during the Covid-19 pandemic, and he wanted to do something on his own to contribute to the ever-growing chess community. Berlin GP: Rapport and Leinier win tie-breaks to reach Semifinals

Richard Rapport and Leinier Dominguez Perez defeated Radoslaw Wojtaszek and Wesley So each respectively to advance to the FIDE Berlin GP Semifinals. The Hungary no.1 will face Hikaru Nakamura and Leinier will be up against the man in-form, Levon Aronian. Rapport started the tie-break with a win against Wojtaszek after the latter faltered when he was low on time. So despite beating Leinier in their Classical encounter with the black pieces, he was unable to repeat the same in rapid tie-breaks. WIM Mounika Akshaya wins the King's Gambit Scholarship of Rs.120,000

Mounika Akshaya Bommini is 18 years old and recently became India's latest WIM. She had been very ambitious about her chess in the pandemic and had planned several European trips. This had eaten up her parent's savings and it was becoming increasingly difficult to continuing her training to get better at chess. Prabodh Prakash, a software developer from Bangalore, who has fallen in love with chess and follows ChessBase India regularly put up a scholarship of Rs.1,20,000 (Rs.10,000 per month). He named it the King's Gambit Scholarship! This has been awarded to Akshaya so that she can continue her training and make India proud in the years to come.

Berlin GP R6: Nakamura makes a great escape against Esipenko

Hikaru Nakamura became the second Semifinalist of FIDE Berlin GP 2022. The Speed King made a Houdini like escape as top Russian teenager Andrey Esipenko missed several opportunities to win the game and secure a spot for himself in the knockout stage. Radoslaw Wojtaszek drew with Grigoriy Oparin after having a promising position. He will now have to play against Richard Rapport to determine the Pool B winner. Leinier Dominguez defeated Alexei Shirov and Pentala Harikrishna holding Wesley So to a draw means, there will be an All-American tie-breaks between Leinier and So to determine Pool D winner. Guwahati, Delhi and Gujarat to host three GM Open tournaments in March 2022

Over-the-board chess tournament is resuming in India, starting with National Senior Open and Women 2022 later this month. If you wish to play strong GM tournaments and worry about travel uncertainties outside the country, fret not. There will be three consecutive GM Open tournaments at Guwahati, Delhi and Ahmedabad. It starts from 13th March, immediately after the conclusion of National Junior. So even if you are playing in any of the four confirmed National championships, you can make plans for the three strong events which has a very good prize fund too. Berlin GP R5: Aronian storms into the Semifinals, Nakamura blazes Grischuk

Levon Aronian is in a great form at Berlin GP. He beat Vincent Keymer with some fantastic play in Round 5. The two-time FIDE World Cup winner is now USA no.1 and World no.4 in the live ratings. Hikaru Nakamura also scored a brilliant victory over Alexander Grischuk. The Speed King decided to not play in the Title Tuesday tournament on his rest day to save his energy for the GP which matters more in greater scale of things as mentioned by him in the post-match interview. He will face Esipenko today to decide who secures a place in Semifinal from Pool A. Vidit drew with Dubov and Harikrishna lost his game against Leinier. Berlin GP R4: Vidit and Harikrishna still in the hunt

Both Vidit Gujrathi and Pentala Harikrishna drew their respective games against Levon Aronian and Alexei Shirov in Round 4 of FIDE Berlin GP 2022. They are now at 2.0/4 each. Aronian and So lead Pool C and D 3.0/4 each. Shirov arrived 14 minutes late to his game as he mistook it to be a rest day. A minute late would have cost him the game instead of €500 from his prize money as mentioned in the tournament regulations. Praggnanandhaa on his debut at Tata Steel Chess 2022 Masters

16-year-old R Praggnanandhaa won the Julius Baer Challengers Chess Tour in October last year. It earned him a regular spot at the second season of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour which starts from 19th February. Before that, Praggnanandhaa had a stellar debut at the FIDE World Cup 2021 back in July. He eliminated Gabriel Sargissian and Michal Krasenkow in Round 2 and 3 respectively, before getting eliminated by Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in Round 4. MVL went on to become World Blitz champion later in 2021. Berlin GP R3: Vidit Gujrathi decimates Daniil Dubov

Vidit Gujrathi beat Daniil Dubov in Round 3 of FIDE Berlin GP 2022. This is Vidit's second consecutive win against Dubov and third over-the-board victory against the former world rapid champion. In fact, Vidit has won all three otb tournament encounters against him. Aronian's win against Keymer made things more challenging for Vidit. He must beat Aronian to keep his Semifinal hopes alive, while a loss against him today will virtually put an end to it. Harikrishna drew his third consecutive game 1.5/3. Suyog Wagh wins Orbis 2 IM Round Robin and scores his maiden IM-norm

We often read about young players scoring norms, achieving titles, creating and breaking records. It is also true that one can do well and achieve their goals step by step even after becoming an adult. 21-year-old FM Suyog Wagh scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win IM Round Robin "Orbis-2 2022", finish 1.5 points ahead of the competition to earn his maiden IM-norm at Paracin, Serbia. The Ahmednagar, Maharashtra lad is a former Commonwealth Under-20 Gold medalist, Maharashtra State Rapid and Blitz 2019 champion. After barely missing out on two consecutive previous occasion, the reigning Maharashtra State Amateur champion has finally found his breakthrough.

Vidit Gujrathi and Pentala Harikrishna drew their second round games against Vincent Keymer and Wesley So respectively. Leinier Dominguez Perez arguably scored the most exciting win of the round against Alexei Shirov. Hikaru Nakamura defeated Andrey Esipenko in his own typical style. Richard Rapport bounced back from his first round defeat to win against Vladimir Fedoseev by tapping on to his creative side. Harikrishna drew with So.
