MPL 58th National Senior R6-7: Arjun Erigaisi and Gukesh share the lead 6.0/7

GM D Gukesh halted IM Koustav Chatterjee's fantastic run in the sixth round. He drew with GM Aravindh Chithambaram in Round 7 from a completely lost position on at least two different occasion. GM Arjun Erigaisi defeated GM Abhijeet Gupta and then drew with GM Aryan Chopra to maintain his lead. While Arjun Erigaisi is yet to show any weakness, Gukesh has already overcome a disaster. Ten players are in the chase at 5.5/7. They are - Lalith, Adhiban, Aryan, Aravindh, Mitrabha, Sayantan, Visakh, Deep, Pranav and Iniyan. Last three rounds to go. MPL 47th National Women R5: Maharashtra's Sakshi and Divya share the lead

Maharashtra's WGM Divya Deshmukh and WIM Sakshi Chitlange have emerged as the co-leaders at MPL 47th National Women Chess Championship 2022. Both Sakshi and Divya seized their advantage in the major piece endgame against WGM Mary Ann Gomes (PSPB) and WIM Priyanka Nutakki (AP) respectively. They will inevitably face each other in the sixth round. Top seed IM Vaishali (TN) was held to another draw. It was WIM Arpita Mukherjee (WB) this time. MPL 58th National Senior R5: Lalit, Abhijeet and Koustav score to join five-way lead

The clash of titans between GM D Gukesh (TN) and GM Arjun Erigaisi (TEL) ended in an exciting draw. GM Aryan Chopra (DEL) was unable to capitalize on his advantage against GM Lalit Rohit (PSPB). Five-time Commonwealth Gold medalist, GM Abhijeet Gupta (PSPB) beat IM Aditya Mittal (MAH). IM Koustav Chatterjee (WB) continues his dream run as he beat GM Karthikeyan Murali (PSPB). Thus Lalit, Abhijeet Gupta and Koustav Chatterjee joined the previous round leaders Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi. FIDE Council condemns Russia's military action in Ukraine

FIDE Council held an extraordinary meeting yesterday to address the current situation due to Russia's military invasion of Ukraine. Just like FIFA and UEFA had urgent executive committee meeting, FIDE also had one where it condemned the military action. Among other things, it was also announced that no official FIDE chess competitions and events will take place in Russia and Belarus. Sergey Karjakin and Sergey Shipov's public statements about support of unjustified military action is condemned by FIDE Council. Indian IM and doctor Anwesh Upadhyaya trapped in his apartment in Kyiv

Things are getting really tense for IM Anwesh Upadhyaya, an Indian IM and doctor, who is stuck in his apartment in Kyiv. The city is under siege from Russian army and a curfew has been imposed until Monday. It is too risky to venture out and Anwesh is stuck in his apartment. The former National Rapid champion of India was in Kyiv since nearly a decade to study medicine and now works at a local hospital as a resident doctor. He is hoping for things to improve so that he can make his way back to India.

Magnus Carlsen wins Airthings Masters 2022

Magnus Carlsen took the minimum number of games to win the second set of the Finals. Unlike the first season, the world champion started Meltwater Champions Chess Tour 2022 by winning Airthings Masters. After a draw in the first game, Carlsen won the next two games to win the Finals. Although Nepomniachtchi had a pleasant position in the second game, he just went all-in which did not work out. One cannot forget the world events which is going on currently certainly has affected Nepomniachtchi's performance in the Finals, but that does not take any credit away from the world no.1. MPL 47th National Women R3-4: Priyanka Nutakki halts Vaishali's momentum

WIM Priyanka Nutakki (AP) held the top seed IM Vaishali R (TN) to a draw in Round 4 of MPL 47th National Women Chess Championship 2022. Vaishali and Priyanka are joined by six more women in the lead 3.5/4. They are - WGM Mary Ann Gomes (PSPB), IM Soumya Swaminathan (PSPB), WGM Divya Deshmukh (MAH), WIM Arpita Mukherjee (WB), WGM Srija Seshadri (TN) and WIM Sakshi Chitlange (MAH). Soumya had a great escape against state mate WFM Srishti Pandey in the third round. Sakshi had a great day as she defeated WGM Nandhidhaa P V and drew with Soumya in Round 3 and 4 respectively. IM Koustav Chatterjee (WB) had a fantastic second day. He drew with the top seed B Adhiban (PSPB) in Round 3 and then he defeated former Asian Continental champion Sethuraman (PSPB) in Round 4. Arjun Erigaisi (TEL), D Gukesh (TN) and Aryan Chopra (DEL) emerged as the leaders 4.0/4 in MPL 58th National Senior Chess Championship 2022. Gukesh will face Arjun Erigaisi in Round 5 and Aryan Chopra will go against Lalit Rohit. Aditya Mittal, Aronyak Ghosh and Koustav are the only three IMs at 3.5/4 each. India bids for the Chess Olympiad 2022

The current situation in the world where Russia invading Ukraine has led to FIDE taking a decision to not host the World Chess Olympiad 2022 in Moscow. The Olympiad is the biggest chess spectacle in the world with more than 190 countries participating in it. With just 5 months to go it seemed difficult to organize the event. However, India has come forward and the All India Chess Federation has made a bid organize the Olympiad 2022 in the country. The total cost of hosting the event would be close to 75 crores (10 million USD). However, AICF is confident that this can be pulled off, with two cities already having shown interest to fund and host the event.

MPL 58th National Senior R1-2: Maharashtra's Suyog Wagh and Kashish Jain score big upsets

Maharashtra's FM Suyog Wagh and Kashish Jain Manoj scored big victories over Tamil Nadu's GM Iniyan P and GM Vishnu Prasanna in Round 2 of MPL 58th National Senior Chess Championship. Kerala State Senior champion Chandar Raju forced the top seed of the tournament, GM B Adhiban to fight for 4.5 hours to earn his first point of the event. Harshit Pawar (DEL) and Rahul Gurung (SIK) scored upset victories over two-time Tamil Nadu State Senior champion IM Pranav V and Asian Junior 2021 Gold medalist IM Raahul V S respectively in Round 1. Mrittika Mallick continues her momentum after winning her maiden West Bengal State title five days ago. She defeated IM Bhakti Kulkarni (Goa) in the first round of MPL 47th National Women Championship 2022. The 13-year-old girl drew with WGM Kiran Manisha Mohanty (ODI) in the second round. In Round 2, WFM Kotepalli Sai Nirupama (AP), Telangana State Senior champion Sarayu Velpula, WB State Junior champion WCM Bristy Mukherjee  defeated WIM Rakshitta Ravi (TN), WIM Savitha Shri B (TN), WIM Priyanka K (TN) each respectively. Airthings Masters Final 1: Four exciting draws

Ian Nepomniachtchi and Magnus Carlsen played some exciting chess in the Finals of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Airthings Masters. All four games ended in draws. However, out of them, three games felt like could have a decisive result. Carlsen was winning in all three of them, although Nepomniachtchi had his chance in the most exciting game of the day, the second one. One cannot shake the feeling that the worldly events are certainly affecting the players. It is evident from their games. A winner will certainly be decided today. Samyak Dharewa and Mrittika Mallick win West Bengal State Sub-Junior Boys and Girls 2022

12-year-old Samyak Dharewa scored an unbeaten 6.0/7 to become the first player from Darjeeling district to win West Bengal State Sub-Junior 2022 Boys. Three more players scored 6.0/7. They are - Snehil Raj Singh, Ankit Ray and Niladri Banerjee. They were placed second to fourth respectively according to tie-breaks. Mrittika Mallick of Hooghly district clinched her maiden State title. She scored 6.5/7 and finished a full point ahead of the competition. Arhashirsha Biswas and Debapriya Manna secured second and third place respectively scoring 5.5/7. Top three received, ₹4000 and a winner's trophy, ₹3000 and ₹2500 cash prize each respectively. Airthings Masters SF: Magnus Carlsen set to face Ian Nepomniachtchi in the Finals

Ian Nepomniachtchi will face Magnus Carlsen in the Finals of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Airthings Masters. Both Nepomniachtchi and Carlsen took the minimum number of games to eliminate Esipenko and Artemiev. They won their respective Semifinals 2.5-0.5. They will be facing each other in the Finals for the first time since their world championship clash last November. Of course, online rapid cannot be considered a rematch for the world championship because the format and stakes are very much different. Adhiban gets top billing in MPL 58th National Senior Chess Championship

MPL 58th National Senior Chess Championship will be the first National championship to take place since the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted regular schedule in early 2020. The most coveted National championship will take place at Ganges Club, Kanpur from 25th February to 3rd March 2022. The total prize fund has been increased by 50% since the last over-the-board National Senior championship which took place in December 2019. B Adhiban is the top seed of the tournament, Tata Steel 2022 Challenger winner Arjun Erigaisi will be the second and five-times Commonwealth Gold medalist Abhijeet Gupta will be the third seed.
