Chess Artistry Adventure Part II - Deeper Into the Jungle

Judit Polgar's Global Chess Festival is being held in Budapest, Hungary, on the 8th of October this year. Among other things, the current edition of the annual gala is hosting a study composing cum exhibition event called Chess Artistry Adventure. The artful program in memory of the late Pal Benko has received fourteen original studies from some of the best composers in the world. In an article we published last month, four of these were explained in detail. Today, as it were, we venture deeper into the forest and tackle some more from the rest of them. What follows is some high-class chess, with difficulty ranging from the guilefully complex to the tortuously analytical—nothing remotely facile, nothing for the faint-hearted!

World Youth U16 Olympiad 2022 R6: India squashes Mongolia

Mongolia got crushed by India 1-3 in the sixth round of FIDE World Youth Under-16 Olympiad 2022. GM Pranav V, IM Pranesh M and Mrittika Mallick - all three of them scored emphatic victories over their respective opponents. Rohit S suffered the sole loss. Turkiye-Red maintains their sole lead with a perfect 12/12. Four teams - India, Iran, Uzbekistan-1 and Azerbaijan-1 are currently sharing second place 9/12. India will face Uzbekistan-1 in the seventh round. FM Harshad will be replacing S Rohit, while Uzbekistan-1 makes one change. Round 7 starts today at 3 p.m. local time, 4:30 p.m. IST. 1st Bikaner GM Open R8: Can Ram Aravind stop Abhijeet Gupta?

Abhijeet Gupta maintains his sole lead by playing a quiet draw against GM Tsegmed Batchuluun (MGL) in the eighth round of 1st Bikaner GM Open 2022. Apart from Abhijeet, FM Ram Aravind L N is having a great tournament. He defeated his second GM of the event, Duc Hoa Nguyen (VIE) to move to 6/8. The teenager was very close to beating the top seed of the tournament, GM Levan Pantsulaia (GEO) too in the previous round. IM Arash Tahbaz (IRI) is the sole player at 6.5/8, followed by Dhananjay S and GM Raset Ziatdinov (USA) at 6/8 each. Five Indian juniors will feature in Magnus Chess Academy Challenge starting today

The second leg of Challengers Chess Tour 2022 starts today with Magnus Chess Academy Challenge. 15-players including five Indians - GM Pranav Venkatesh, GM Bharath Subramaniyam H, WIM Sahithi Varshini, Ilamparthi A R and WIM Vishwa Vasnawala will take part. The Total prize fund for each tournament is US$10,000. A total of 14 rounds of Blitz games will be played in two days. Andrey Esipenko won the previous leg. The total prize fund for the entire season is $30000 + wildcard for Champions Chess Tour 2023 and a $10000 match against the previous season winner, GM Praggnanandhaa in Tel Aviv, Israel. European Club Cup 2022 R4: Vishy Anand saves the day for CSU ASE Superbet

Vishy Anand scored an important win for his team CSU ASE Superbet in the fourth round of European Chess Club Cup 2022. The maestro scored a fantastic victory over Shakhriyar Mamedyarov to ensure his team draws with Schachclub Viernheim 1934 e.V. Magnus Carlsen defeated Pentala Harikrishna, still his team Offerspill Chess Club lost to Novy Bor Chess Club 2.5-3.5. Vidit Gujrathi registered his fourth consecutive victory to become India no.4 in the live ratings. Novy Bor will face Superbet in the fifth round which means it will be Harikrishna vs Anand. They will face each other for the first time in a rated game since November 2019 at Tata Steel India Rapid and Blitz. Round 5 starts today at 2 p.m. local time, 5:30 p.m. IST. World Youth U16 Olympiad 2022 R5: Iran draws with India

India drew with Iran 2-2 in the fifth round of FIDE World Youth Under-16 Olympiad 2022. GM Pranav V made a big save against IM Bardiya Daneshvar. IM Pranesh M scored a crushing victory over FM Reza Mahdavi. FM Harshad S lost and Tanisha S Boramanikar drew her game. India will face Mongolia in the sixth round. Mongolia has four members only, so they will have to play with the same order. Mrittika Mallick and Rohit S will be replacing Harshad and Tanisha. Turkiye-Red has gained sole lead with a perfect 10/10. They are followed by Kazakhstan and Cuba at 8/10 each. India is currently tied at fourth place with seven teams at 7/10 each. 1st Bikaner GM Open R7: Abhijeet Gupta is on a roll

Abhijeet Gupta continues his momentum at 1st Bikaner GM Open 2022. He defeated GM Duc Hoa Nguyen (VIE) in seventh round. The Vietnamese GM blundered in time trouble in the endgame where he initially had the upper hand. Abhijeet moves to 6.5/7. IM Arash Tahbaz (IRI) defeated GM Michal Krasenkow (POL) to remain in the hunt 6/7. Ten players are at 5/7. IM Anuj Shrivatri, FM Ram Aravind L N and Dhananjay S are the only three Indians among them. Ram Aravind had a great opportunity against the top seed, GM Levan Pantsulaia (GEO). Sharan Rao wins 24th Grand Hotel Adriatico Open 2022

FM Sharan Rao scored an unbeaten 6.5/8 to win 24th Grand Hotel Adriatico Open 2022. He finished a half point ahead of the field. IM Miragha Aghayev (ITA) scored sole 6/8 to finish second. Four players finished at 5.5/8. Out of them, FM Antonio Loiacono (ITA) was placed third according to tie-breaks. He gained 27 Elo rating points in the process and won €500 along with a trophy as his first prize. This is Sharan's second overall, first Classical tournament victory of the year. He gained 17.8 Elo rating points at 26th HIT Open after this, taking his peak rating to 2350. Dinesh Kumar Jaganathan clinches 1st Bikaner International GM Category B Below 2000 Rating

Dinesh Kumar Jaganathan scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 1st Bikaner GM Category B Below 2000 Rating Tournament. He finished a full point ahead of the field. Six players scored 7.5/9 each. His elder brother, Kishore Kumar Jaganathan was placed second on tie-breaks, Ajay Virwani was adjudged third. The total prize fund for Category B was ₹1000000. Top three prizes were ₹100000, ₹75000 and ₹65000 along with a trophy each.. A total of 299 players participated from various states across India along with Bangladesh and Nepal. D Gukesh continues his winning streak in Mayrhofen, Austria. He defeated IM Ahmad Ahmadzada in third round of European Chess Club Cup 2022. Vidit Gujrathi and Arjun Erigaisi also won, Vishy Anand, P Harikrishna and Nihal Sarin drew their respective games. The three teams in which the six Indians are playing - CSU ASE Superbet, Novy Bor Chess Club and TAJFUN - SK Ljubljana are among the leaders with a perfect score 6/6. Things will start heating up in the fourth round as Anand vs Mamedyarov, Fedorchuk vs Gukesh, Carlsen vs Harikrishna, Vidit vs Tari, Korobov vs Arjun and Pouya vs Nihal are on the cards in Round 4. India made a strong comeback by defeating Uzbekistan-2 in the fourth round of FIDE World Youth Under-16 Olympiad 2022. GM Pranav V, FM Harshad S and Tanisha S Boramanikar scored the wins, while IM Pranesh M was held to a draw. India will face the biggest challenge of the event so far, the top seed Iran in the fifth round. There are no changes in the Indian team, however Iran has made one change. 1st Bikaner GM Open R6: Abhijeet Gupta endures an epic battle against Levan Pantsulaia

The game between the top two seeds of 1st Bikaner GM Open 2022 was an epic one. GM Levan Pantsulaia and GM Abhijeet Gupta were facing each other for the first time since 2015. The previous four encounters were tied at 2-2, where both sides had a win over the other. The sixth round game could have gone either player's way, yet it ended in a draw, nevertheless it was a long but an exciting encounter. Both of them left everything board and did not hold back one bit. Abhijeet maintains his sole lead 5.5/6. GM Duc Hoa Nguyen (VIE) and IM Arash Tahbaz (IRI) are in the chase at 5/6 each. Novendra Priasmoro wins 17th IGB Dato Arthur Tan Open 2022, Deepan second and Karthik third

Indonesia's top GM Novendra Priasmoro scored 7.5/9 to successfully retain his Dato Arthur Tan Malaysian Open Chess Championship 2022 in the 17th edition. Despite starting the tournament with a loss, he scored an impressive 7.5 points in the remaining eight games, finished a half point ahead of the competition to become champion. GM Deepan Chakkravarthy scored sole 7/9 to finish second. GM Karthik Venkataraman and Malaysian prodigy Yu Tian Poh scored 7/9 each. Karthik was placed second due to better tie-breaks. D Gukesh played like Zlatan Ibrahimović does in a football match. In the second round, the 16-year-old just brutally destroyed his opponent, GM Zoltan Varga. SK Dunajska Streda lost to his team, CSU ASE Superbet 0.5-5.5. Vishy Anand was rested and the new Romania no.1, Richard Rapport played in his stead. Pentala Harikrishna, Arjun Erigaisi and Nihal Sarin drew their respective games. Vidit Gujrathi won a prolonged encounter which he should have much before.  The legend, Anand will return to the board once again in the third round as he will battle against GM Rauf Mamedov. GM Abhijeet Gupta extended his sole lead by a full point at 1st Bikaner GM Open 2022. He defeated his coleader, IM Tahbaz Arash (IRI) comfortably in the fifth round. Six players are trailing the leader at 4/5 each. Indrajeet Mahindrakar scored a big win over GM Valeriy Neverov (UKR). Former National Junior champion and IM-elect FM Aradhya Garg, FM Ram Aravind L N and Arhan Chethan Anand drew with GM Deepan Chakkravarthy, IM Anuj Shrivatri and IM Ratnakaran K respectively.
