FTX Crypto Cup 2022 R5: Duda beats Carlsen four times in four hours

Lately, the world champion's biggest nemesis has been Jan-Krzysztof Duda. The Poland no.1 ended Carlsen's 125-game unbeaten streak in October 2020 in Norway. He also eliminated the world no.1 from the FIDE World Cup 2021 in the Semifinals. In the fifth round of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour FTX Crypto Cup, Duda started with two wins and put Carlsen in a tough situation. The world champion won the next two games to force tie-breaks. The Pole once again won consecutive Blitz tie-break games to beat Carlsen. World Blitz 2013 winner, Liem got his revenge against Praggnanandhaa by winning the match in the exact fashion he lost at Oslo Esports Cup, 2.5-0.5. Gukesh continues his meteoric rise, now World no.18

When 44th Chess Olympiad ended, GM D Gukesh won a Gold on Board no.1 ahead of Nodirbek Abdusattorov and Magnus Carlsen. He also won a team Bronze for the India 2 team. His world ranking at that time was 24 in live ratings. A week later, Gukesh started playing for Turkish Airlines Sports Club (THY) in Turkish Isbank Chess Super League. The 16-year-old won his first three games against GM Aryan Gholami, GM Andrey Esipenko and Turkey no.3 GM Vahap Sanal. All three were strong opponents, the Gukesh juggernaut continues. His live rating is now 2735.9 and currently he is World no.18. He is facing GM Mikhail Kobalia in Round 4. Photo: Official site

28th Abu Dhabi Masters 2022 R2-3: Arjun Erigaisi emerges sole leader

Arjun Erigaisi outplayed Serbia no.1 Aleksandar Indjic to emerge sole leader at 28th Abu Dhabi Masters 2022. 26 players including 11 Indians are in pursuit at 2.5/3 each. IM Aditya Samant first drew with GM Nihal Sarin in Round 2 and then he defeated GM Abhijeet Gupta in the third round, after the latter made a simple miscalculation. IM Sammed Shete defeated GM Robert Hovhannisyan (ARM) with a masterful play in the endgame. He drew the next game against GM Sethuraman S P. Among the women, WIM Rucha Pujari and WIM Sakshi Chitlange picked up emphatic wins over IM Dushyant Sharma and IM Vardaan Nagpal respectively. FTX Crypto Cup 2022 R4: Praggnanandhaa scores a crushing victory over Aronian

Praggnanandhaa had beaten Aronian only once earlier this year. That changed yesterday when the 17-year-old defeated the two-time FIDE World Cup winner in consecutive games to win the match. The Armenian, now representing USA, had his chance in the second game which he was unable to capitalize on. He trapped his own queen in the first ten moves of the third game. The much experienced artist was unable to get a foothold in the fourth game and lost it too. Magnus Carlsen also had the exact score as Praggnanandhaa en route his victory over Liem Quang Le. 28th Abu Dhabi Masters 2022 R1: Sanket Chakravarty stuns Aditya Mittal

Abu Dhabi Chess Festival is finally back in its original form of Classical tournament. Last year in December, the 27th edition was a shortened one due to the Covid-19 pandemic. For the first time since 2019, the 28th Abu Dhabi Masters witnesses the participation of 148 players including 73 Indians making it almost 50% players are Indians. Arjun Erigaisi is the highest rated Indian in the field. 24 players are rated above 2600. 43 GMs, 35 IMs, 7 WGMs and 3 WIMs are taking part. The average rating of the tournament is 2396. That should give you an idea about the strength of the tournament. Sanket Chakravarty scored the biggest upset of the first round as he defeated IM Aditya Mittal. Praggnanandhaa started the third round with a loss against Hans Niemann. He beat USA's top junior in the second game, drew the next and won the fourth game again. Thus, he won the match 1.5-2.5 and scored 3 points again. The 17-year-old currently shares the lead with the world champion Magnus Carlsen who defeated Levon Aronian with the same score. Meltwater Champions Chess Tour FTX Crypto Cup 2022 witnessed the first Armageddon between Alireza Firouzja and Anish Giri. The Dutch no.1 missed his chances twice in two Rapid games, both with the black pieces, eventually his luck ran out as he could not draw the Armageddon to win the match. Team India won double Bronze at Open and Women section of 44th Chess Olympiad. That's not all. A total of seven individual medals - 2 Gold, 1 Silver and 4 Bronze medals were won. Praggnanandhaa lost to Anish Giri in the final round of Oslo Esports Cup earlier this year. The wunderkind did not forget it, as that loss cost him a podium finish. After missing a golden opportunity in the third game of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour FTX Crypto Cup, the 17-year-old made sure he does not let another opportunity slip by in the fourth game. The world no.9's twitter jibe backfired as he went down against the in-form Praggnanandhaa. USA's top junior surprised the world champion in their very first game. Magnus Carlsen then won the next three games, including a game starting with 1.a3 to show he is still the man to beat. Harsha Bharathakoti dominates 24th HZ University of Applied Sciences Open 2022

GM Harsha Bharathakoti started 24th HZ University of Applied Sciences Open with three consecutive wins. He lost the fourth round game to FM Shreyas Royal (ENG). The 21-year-old did not let that loss deter him. He went on to win the next five games to finish a full point ahead of the field 8/9. Seven players scored 7/9. Former World Champion GM Ruslan Ponomariov (UKR) and IM Liam Vrolijk (NED) was placed second and third according to tie-breaks. Top three prizes were €2000, €1300 and €800 each. Harsha becomes the second Indian after K Sasikiran (2004 and 2010) to win this event which has been won by the likes of Ivan Sokolov, Rustam Kasimdzhanov, Michal Krasenkow, Fabiano Caruana, Baadur Jobava and Loek van Wely among others. Praggnanandhaa had not defeated Alireza Firouzja in any format until yesterday. The recently turned 17-year-old started his Meltwater Champions Chess Tour FTX Crypto Cup 2022 with a resounding victory over the former world no.2. The current world no.4 struck back immediately in the second game. However, he faltered in the next and Praggnanandhaa took the lead. The fourth game ended in a draw, which meant Praggnanandhaa won the match. Jan-Krzysztof Duda, Magnus Carlsen and Levon Aronian were the other three victors of the round. India's last GM Pranav V. achieved the grandmaster title on 8th of August 2022. With that the country got its 75th GM in the 75th year of its independence. Aronyak Ghosh wins 46th Ciutat de Badalona Open 2022, Anuj Shrivatri second

IM Aronyak and IM Anuj Shrivatri both scored 7/9 each at 46th Ciutat de Badalona Memorial M Castella Open 2022. Aronyak edged past Anuj due to better second tie-break score. They faced each other in the sixth round which ended in a draw. Four players scored 6.5/9 each. They are - IM Dylan Isidro Berdayes Ason (CUB), Saurabh Anand, Ritvik Krishnan and IM Filemon Cruz (PER). They secured third to sixth place according to tie-breaks. The second Major event of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour 2022 season is FTX Crypto Cup. It will be completely an in-person esports event. All eight players will be playing from Miami, Florida in USA. Praggnanandhaa will be battling against Magnus Carlsen, Levon Aronian, Jan-Krzysztof Duda and Wildcard entrants Alireza Firoujza, Anish Giri, Liem Quang Le and Hans Niemann. Each match of the round-robin tournament will comprise four games. Vantika Agrawal scores her second IM-norm at 44th Chess Olympiad 2022

A lot of Indian women performed well at the 44th Chess Olympiad 2022. Yet, WGM Vantika Agrawal was the sole Indian to score an IM-norm. It was her second IM-norm. She also crossed 2400 in the live ratings in the process. She scored her maiden IM-norm at FIDE Grand Swiss 2021, a little over two months after becoming India's 21st WGM. She scored both IM-norms at two major events, Olympiad is certainly the biggest one. She had a very good opportunity to beat WGM Zuzana Borosova (SVK) in the final round. A win could have earned her an individual medal, team finishing fourth etc. It was not meant to be. Valentin Baidetskyi wins 35th Schwarzacher Open 2022, Praveen Kumar third

IM Praveen Kumar C started the 35th Schwarzacher Open 2022 with 0.5/2. He won the next four games and then drew with the second seed GM Robert Zelcic (CRO). He defeated the top seed GM Mladen Palac (CRO) in the penultimate round. A draw in the last round against IM Valentin Baidetskyi (UKR) and GM Alexandre Dgebuadze's (BEL) win ensured all three of them end the event with the same score 6.5/9. Baidetskyi, Dgebuadze and Praveen were placed first, second and third according to tie-breaks. Top three prizes were €2500, €1500 and €100 each.
