Sethuraman is the top seed at MPL 59th National Senior Chess Championship 2022

MPL 59th National Senior Chess Championship starts today in New Delhi. For the first time since 2018, it will be a full-fledged event, which means there will be 13 rounds instead of 11 like the last two rated editions. The time control is also back to 90 minutes for 40 moves followed by 30 minutes + 30 seconds increment from move no.1. The total prize fund remains unchanged from the previous edition which took place in March this year. Sethuraman S P is the top seed of the tournament, The captain of India at the World Teams 2022, Vaibhav Suri will be the second seed and five-times Commonwealth Gold medalist Abhijeet Gupta will be the third seed. Kirill Alekseenko inches away from clinching Chessable Sunway Sitges Open 2022

Kirill Alekseenko drew with the top seed Yangyi Yu (CHN) to maintain his sole lead 8/9 at Chessable Sunway Sitges Open 2022. He is now a half point ahead of the competition. Hans Niemann (USA) is the only player who is in the chase 7.5/9. Alekseenko needs a draw in the final round to win the tournament without needing a Playoff. However, a loss would make Hans the winner. Seven players are at 7/9. B Adhiban is the sole Indian among them. He will face M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI) in the final round. Bristy Mukherjee wins Tata Steel Chess Festival 2022 Women Rapid

WCM Bristy Mukherjee and Alka Das scored an unbeaten 6/7 each at the Tata Steel Chess Festival 2022 All India Women Rapid. They were placed first and second according to tie-breaks. This was the first time a Women's only Rapid event took place at the Tata Steel Chess Festival, with an equal prize fund as the Rapid Rating Open event of ₹100000. Top three prizes were ₹20000 + trophy, ₹15000 and ₹10000 each respectively. Three players - WIM Arpita Mukherjee, WIM Chandreyee Hajra and Raima Bhattacharjee scored 5.5/7 each. Chessable Sunway Sitges Open R8: Andrey Esipenko grinds a Knight endgame for 66 moves

GM Andrey Esipenko grinded a relatively equal Knight endgame for 66 moves against IM Aditya Samant. Obviously this is something straight out of the world champion Carlsen's wheelhouse. It is well-known that Esipenko became the first teenager to beat Carlsen and caused him a lot of trouble at the World Cup 2021. Thus, Esipenko certainly has assimilated the Viking's endgame grinding skills. GM Kirill Alekseenko drew with GM M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI) to maintain his sole lead 7.5/8 by a full point at Chessable Sunway Sitges Open 2022. 8th Gashimov Memorial 2022: Abdusattorov wins the Rapid section

D Gukesh had a winless final day of the Rapid at 8th Vugar Gashimov Memorial 2022. He drew with Hao Wang (CHN) and the Rapid section winner, Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB), lost to Sam Shankland (USA). The reigning World Rapid champion, Abdusattorov won the Rapid convincingly 14/18, finishing two points ahead of Francisco Vallejo Pons (ESP) and Rauf Mamedov (AZE) 12/18 each. Having a two point lead, heading into Blitz event will certainly give the 44th Olympiad Gold medalist a huge boost. Today is a rest day. A total of 18 round of Blitz will be played on Blitz on Thursday and Friday. Blitz Round 1 starts tomorrow 22nd December 2022 from 3 p.m. local time, 4:30 p.m. IST.

Raja Rithvik decimates 9th Chessable Sunway Sitges Blitz 18/12, Adhiban third

India's 70th GM Raja Rithvik R completely dominated the field at 9th Chessable Sunway Sitges Blitz 18/12. He scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 and finished a staggering 1.5 points ahead of the field. He performed at 2746 and gained a massive 77.2 Elo rating points. Four players - GM Jorden van Foreest (NED), GM B Adhiban, GM Lance Henderson De La Fuente (AND) and GM Gawain Jones (ENG) scored 7/9 each. They were placed second to fifth according to tie-breaks. The top three prizes were €350, €250 and €150 along with three months Chessable Pro Membership. The first-ever Khelo Chess India event at The Sanskaar Valley School

The Head of Hindi ChessBase India, FI Niklesh Jain held a chess workshop at The Sanskaar Valley school in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. This was the first 'Khelo Chess India' event held on Saturday 17th December to promote chess among school children and increase general awareness of the sport. First children were taught about the advantages and benefits of learning and playing chess, then Niklesh played a blindfold match against Samarath Raghuwanshi. The blindfold match was shown on a live board where spectators were able to follow the game. Finally, he played ten simultaneous exhibition matches against the school children. 8th Gashimov Memorial 2022 Rapid R4-6: Gukesh does a 116-move draw against Shakh

D Gukesh started the second day with a victory over Aydin Suleymanli (AZE) at 8th Vugar Gashimov Memorial 2022 Rapid. The latter's unfettered attack did not pay off. In the following round, Gukesh provided stiff resistance against the World Rapid 2013 champion, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. The game ended in a draw after 116-move long grueling battle. It certainly drained both players. The 16-year-old lost his third game of the day against the new World Junior champion, Abdulla Gadimbayli which also went for 82 moves. GM Aravindh Chithambaram defeated GM Andrey Esipenko to move to 6/7 at Chessable Sunway Sitges Open 2022 Group A. He is now at shared second position with GM M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI). They are at a full point behind the sole leader, GM Kirill Alekseenko 7/7. Aravindh outplayed Esipenko in queen, rook and knight vs queen, rook and bishop endgame. GM Karthikeyan Murali, GM Abhimanyu Puranik and GM Adhiban B are at 5.5/7 each. IM Aditya S Samant drew with Bulgaria no.2 GM Ivan Cheparinov to cross 2500 in the live ratings, 2502.3 to be exact. Sambit Panda becomes the latest International Master of India

18-year-old Sambit Panda became the latest International Master of India on the second week of December 2022. The teenager from Bhubaneswar crossed 2400 in the live ratings, just a week after India got its latest IM in the form of Jubin Jimmy. He fulfilled the rating criteria at Torino International Open - Master in Torino, Italy, nine months after scoring his first IM-norm at MPL 58th National Senior Championship. The second IM-norm was earned at 22nd Dubai Open in September first week. A little less than two months later, he secured his final IM-norm at Asian Continental Chess Championship 2022. D Gukesh won his first round game against Richard Rapport (ROU) at 8th Vugar Gashimov Memorial 2022 Rapid. It was exciting batttle against the creative genius Rapport whose king was vulnerable when he made the final mistake.Then he lost his next two games against Rauf Mamedov (AZE) and Francisco Vallejo Pons (ESP). Rauf outplayed Gukesh positionally. In the game against the Spain no.1, Gukesh got a couple of opportunities to save the game in the rook endgame. However, he missed them all. IM Aronyak Ghosh, Subhayan Kundu and FM Aditya Vikram paul scored 7.5/9 at the Tata Steel Chess Festival 2022 All India Blitz Open. They secured first, second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. Only Aronyak remained undefeated among them. He also won his third consecutive Tata Steel Chess Festival event. Rapid Open and Rapid Rating in 2019 and 2021 respectively and now Blitz Open. A total of 155 players including 5 IMs and two WIMs took part in this nine-round tournament with a time control of 3 minutes + 2 seconds increment each. The total prize fund was ₹39000. GM D Gukesh will participate in his second consecutive super tournament of the year. After a shared third place finish at the Tata Steel Chess India 2022 Rapid, he had a forgettable Blitz event. He would certainly like to do better in his first tournament in Azerbaijan.
