20th Delhi GM Open 2023 R5-6: Neelash and Viani crush Savchenko and Sethuraman

by Shahid Ahmed - 27/03/2023

The top seed of the tournament, GM Sethuraman S P made some simple mistakes and got squashed by IM Viani Antonio Dcunha in the sixth round of 20th Delhi Open 2023. The 50th National Junior Open champion, IM Neelash Saha scored a crushing victory over GM Boris Savchenko. GM Stupak Kirill blundered his knight in the final moments of a rook and minor piece endgame which seemed to have headed towards a draw for a long time. Thus, Aravindh, Neelash, Viani and GM Volodar Murzin are four leaders at a perfect 6/6. A total of 15 players are trailing them by a half point at 5.5/6 each. Out of them, Goutham Krishna H and Anup Shankar R, are the only two untitled players. Round 7 starts today at 10 a.m. IST. Photo: Aditya Sur Roy

A great day for Goutham Krishna

The 34th National Under-12 Open champion, Goutham Krishna H had a fantastic day. First he drew with strong GM from Azerbaijan, Azer Mirozev in the fifth round. Then he seized his opportunity in the sixth round when GM Stany G A made an inaccurate decision in time trouble.

Round 5: Goutham, Kishore and Samarateja shine against GMs

The 34th National Under-12 Open champion, Goutham Krishna H (1990) held GM Azer Mirzoev (AZE, 2437) to a draw. Kishore Kumar Jaganathan (1823) drew with his second consecutive Grandmaster of the event, GM Lalit Rohit (2544). Samarateja K (1571) shared the point with GM Saptarshi Roy (2370).

Round 6: Neelash, Viani and Goutham score big wins

The 50th National Junior Open champion, IM Neelash Saha, IM Viani Antonio Dcunha and Goutham Krishna H defeated GM Boris Savchenko, GM Sethuraman S P and GM Stany G A respectively.

Savchenko - Neelash

Position after 22.Kc3

IM Neelash Saha (2444) in his signature style launched an attack at the center of the board. His opponent, GM Boris Savchenko (2552) decided to run away with his king 22.Kc3 but he was unsuccessful. 22...Rxe3+! was the killer blow 23.fxe3 Rxe3+ 24.Kb4 Bxh5 25.Qd2 Qe7+ 26.Nc5 b6 and checkmate is inevitable.

Sethuraman - Viani

Position after 16.Ne5

It is quite difficult to fathom that GM Sethuraman S P (2639) allowed 16...Nb2 and blundered an exchange for almost no compensation. Perhaps he had a momentary blindspot or just wanted to sacrifice the exchange. 16...Nb2 17.Qc2 Nxd1 18.Rxd1 Nh5 19.h4 Nxf4 20.exf4 Bxe5 21.dxe5 Qc7 and Black won the game in another four moves.

Stany - Goutham

Position after 36.Rf7+

In a sharp position, White faltered 36.Rf7+ Kh6! 37.Rxb7 Nc1 38.Qf3 Qe1+ 39.Kh2 Ne2 and White resigned as the only way for White to stop the checkmate was to give up the queen.
