12th Norway Chess R9: Ding Liren massacres Hikaru Nakamura in Armageddon

For the second consecutive round, all games of the penultimate round of 12th Norway Chess 2024 were decided in Armageddon. Not only the games were decided in Armageddon but also had clear victors means there was no decision based on clock or a draw by black. Alireza Firouzja (FRA) missed his opportunity to win against Magnus Carlsen (NOR) in Armageddon. The world champion, Ding Liren (CHN) completely decimated Hikaru Nakamura (USA) in Armageddon. Aronyak Ghosh convincingly clinches 12th Late Bharatbai Halkude Memorial Rapid Rating Open 2024

IM Aronyak Ghosh scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 12th Late Bharatbai Halkude Memorial Rapid Rating Open 2024 part of LBHM Chess Festival 2024. Aronyak finished a half point ahead of the rest. Seven players - FM Suyog Wagh, CM Snehal Bhosale, IM Abhishek Kelkar, Arvind Iyer, GM P Karthikeyan, GM Saptarshi RoyChowdhury and IM Neelash Saha scored 8/9 each. They were placed second to eighth according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the entire festival was ₹3024234, for Rapid Rating tournament it was ₹401001. The top three prizes were ₹51001, ₹30000 and ₹20000 along with a trophy each respectively. This is Aronyak's third rating tournament triumph of the year.

Aakash and Vaishnavi are Tamil Nadu State Under-15 Open and Girls 2024 Champions

Aakash G and Vaishnavi S K became Tamil Nadu State Under-15 Open and Girls 2024 Champions. Both of them scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 each and finished a half point ahead of the rest. S Haridev and Ananya Raman scored 8/9 each, remained undefeated and secure runner-up in Open and Girls tournaments respectively. Arul Prakash N and Nivedita V C secured third place in their categories scoring 7.5/9 each. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹60000, ₹30000 for each event. The top three prizes were ₹7000 + trophy, ₹5000 and ₹3500 each. The five-day rating tournament was organized by Pudukottai District Chess Association at Chendhuran College of Engineering and Technology in Pudukottai, Tamil Nadu from 15th to 19th May 2024. Vidit Gujrathi set to face world's best at Uzchess Cup Masters 2024 starting today

World no.24 and India no.5 Vidit Gujrathi will play his first tournament after FIDE Candidates 2024 at Uzchess Cup Masters 2024. He will be the sole Indian in the strong lineup comprising - Alexander Grischuk, Yangyi Yu (CHN), Richard Rapport (ROU), Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB), Parham Maghsoodloo (IRI), Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (AZE), Nodirbek Yakubboev (UZB), Javokhir Sindarov (UZB) and Alexey Sarana (SRB). Abhijeet Gupta will be taking part in the Challengers section. The tournament will take place from 5th to 15th June at Tashkent, Uzbekistan. World Junior 2024 R4: Jose Gabriel Cardoso Cardoso and Narmin Abdinova make a perfect start

GM Jose Gabriel Cardoso Cardoso (COL) and Narmin Abdinova (AZE) have emerged sole leaders at FIDE World Junior 2024 Open and Girls. They are the only two players with a perfect score 4/4 after Round 4. IM Mayank Chakraborty missed a small window of opportunity to go for a win against GM Kazybek Nogerbek (KAZ). The game ended in a draw. IM Ilamparthi A R scored another great win against FM Simon Rybka (SVK). Both Mayank and Ilamparthi are at 3.5/4 each. The Asian Junior 2023 Silver medalist, IM Aswath S handed the top seed, GM Abhimanyu Mishra (USA) his second loss of the event. WIM Sofiia Hryzlova (SUI) held the top seed of the Girls, IM Divya Deshmukh to a draw. Narmin defeated FM Liya Kurmangaliyeva (KAZ) to gain sole lead. Neelash Saha wins a double for the second consecutive year at LBHM Chess Festival 2024

IM Neelash Saha, GM Diptayan Ghosh, IM Aronyak Ghosh and IM Ratnakaran K scored 8/9 each at 10th LBHM Rating Open 2024 part of Late Bharatbai Halkude Memorial LBHM Chess Festival 2024. Neelash won the tournament due to better tie-break score. The remaining three were placed second to fourth respectively. Neelash drew against both runners-up, Diptayan an Aronyak in ninth and seventh round respectively. The total prize fund of the entire festival was ₹3024234, for Classical Rating tournament it was ₹1299111. The top three prizes were ₹150000, ₹100111 and ₹50000 along with a trophy each respectively. Neelash also won the 13th LBHM Blitz Rating Open 2024. Both him and Aronyak scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 each. They secured top two places. IM Ratnakaran K scored 8/9 to secure third place. These are Neelash's fifth and sixth tournament triumph of the year, five of them were rated.

World Junior 2024 R3: Mayank Chakraborty pumells Pranav Anand, scores a hat-trick

IM Mayank Chakraborty defeated the highest rated Indian in the field, GM Pranav Anand in Round 3 of FIDE World Junior 2024 Open. The former World Under-16 Open champion, Pranav misjudged the propensity of Mayank's attack on his kingside. IM Ayush Sharma displayed his creative and aggressive style to upstage GM Shawn Rodrigue-Lemieux (CAN). IM Ilamparthi A R quite possibly played the most exciting game of the round. His devastating attack rendered his opponent, FM Zhangir Bizhigitov's (KAZ) two queens ineffective. Harshit Pawar continues his great run by moving his score to 2.5/3. In the Girls section, top seed IM Divya Deshmukh outplayed WIM Tejaswini G. WFM Rindhiya V showed staunch defense and eventually won against WIM Martyna Wikar (POL). Anna Muzychuk (UKR) drew against Vaishali in the Classical game of Round 8 at Norway Chess Women 2024. Vaishali mentioned in the Confession booth that she went all out in Jobava London as she suffered two consecutive Classical losses before this. Vaishali won the back and forth Armageddon on time. The position on the board was equal in a double rook endgame. Reigning Women's World Champion, Wenjun Ju (CHN) scored three points as she defeated Pia Cramling (SWE) in the Classical. Wenjun is the new sole leader 14.5/24, closely followed by Anna 13/24 and then Vaishali 11.5/24. Tingjie Lei (CHN) scored her first Classical victory of the event against Koneru Humpy. 12th Norway Chess R8: Magnus Carlsen bests Praggnanandhaa in Armageddon, increases his sole lead

All three games of Round 8 were decided in Armageddon. Magnus Carlsen (NOR) found a precise finish in a knight vs bishop and three pawns endgame in Armageddon. Praggnanandhaa made one mistake in time trouble. That was enough for the endgame expert to seize his advantage and win the game and match. Hikaru Nakamura (USA) missed his opportunity against Alireza Firouzja (FRA) in the Classical battle. A mistake in Armageddon cost him the game. Magnus increased his sole lead to 14.5/24, Nakamura is at a full point behind 13.5/24, followed by Praggnanandhaa at 12/24. Fabiano Caruana (USA) won Armageddon against Ding Liren (CHN). Dakshita Kumawat scored the biggest upset of FIDE World Junior 2024 Round 2. She found a nice tactic after her opponent WGM Rakshitta Ravi incorrectly pushed a pawn and limited her own bishop's movement. WFM Bhagyashree Patil drew a back and forth game against third seeded WGM Beloslava Krasteva (BUL). Both had their fair share of chances, Bhagyashree having more than her opponent. In the Open section, IM Ayush Sharma missed a very good chance to seize his advantage against IM Rudik Makarian. Mukund Hemant Agarwal made a nice save against IM Ilamparthi A R. Anna Muzychuk (UKR) defeated the reigning Women's World Champion - Wenjun Ju (CHN) to emerge sole leader at Norway Chess Women 2024. Wenjun opted for the Berlin Defence in Ruy Lopez to draw the Classical game. Anna understanding Wenjun's intention, opted to avoid Ruy Lopez, played fast and accurately. Eventually Wenjun ran out of time in an equal rook and knight endgame. The former World Rapid and Blitz Women's champion, Anna reminded everyone why she won those events. Anna handed Wenjun her first Armageddon and match loss of the event. Koneru Humpy scored her first Classical victory of the tournament against Vaishali. 12th Norway Chess R7: Hikaru Nakamura wins an absolute thrilling Armageddon against Magnus Carlsen

Hikaru Nakamura (USA) and Magnus Carlsen (NOR) had quite possibly the most exciting Armageddon of 12th Norway Chess 2024. After a 20-move draw in the Classical, they had an absolute thriller of Armageddon. Nakamura mentioned playing the Sämisch variation in the Nimzo-Indian over a decade ago (exactly on the same day). He lost that game from a winning position. The world no.1 predicted it on the previous night while discussing with his second, GM Peter Heine Nielsen (DEN). Nakamura got himself a winning position in Armageddon by spotting a beautiful tactic. However, towards the end he fumbled and the game headed towards a draw. He managed to win the game on time. R Praggnanandhaa and Alireza Firouzja defeated Ding Liren (CHN) and Fabiano Caruana (USA) respectively in Armageddon. Magnus is still leading 13/21, followed by Nakamura 12.5/21 and Praggnanandhaa 11/21. Round 8 starts today from 5 p.m. CET, 8:30 p.m. IST.

Arjun Erigaisi squashes an IM in 14 moves, now World no.4

Arjun Erigaisi is in phenomenal form. He won the first four games for his team Metz Fischer at French Top 16 Club Championship 2024. He defeated GM Pentala Harikrishna (Asnieres - le Grand Echiquier), GM Vitaly Kunin (Marseille-Echecs), GM Alvar Alonso Rosell (Club 608 - Paris) and IM Loic Travadon (Cergy-Pontoise Echecs) in the first four rounds. Harshit Pawar stunned the top seed of the tournament - GM Abhimanyu Mishra (USA) in the very first round of FIDE World Junior 2024. Harshit landed himself in a worse position out of the opening. However, he did not give up, continued the fight and soon world's youngest GM found himself in deep trouble. Harshit had no trouble seizing and converting his advantage into a full point. Nandish V S, Daksh Goyal and Sri Charan Sandipagu defeated IM IM Artiom Stribuk, IM Ekin Baris Ozenir (TUR) and IM L M S T De Silva (SRI) respectively. In the Girls event, Anupam M Sreekumar made the top seed IM Divya Deshmukh earn her first full point. Wenjun Ju (CHN) defeated Vaishali in the Classical game to become one of the leaders at Norway Chess Women 2024. Vaishali made a few incorrect decisions in the endgame against the reigning Women's World Champion. First she needed to trade the queens before going into the minor piece endgame. Delaying the exchange only made things difficult for her to defend. Later, she missed few chances to salvage a draw. Anna Muzychuk (UKR) defeated Tingjie Lei (CHN) in the Armageddon to join the lead with Wenjun 10.5/18. The leaders will face each other in Round 7. Vaishali is just a half point behind at 10/18.
