4th Athens of the East R1-8: Srihari L R and Nitin in a four-way lead

IM Srihari L R, IM Nitin S, IM Uurtsaikh Agibileg (MGL) and IM Semetei Tologon Tegin (KGZ) are sharing the lead 7.5/8 at 4th Athens of the East GM Tournament 2024. Agibileg drew with Srihari on the top board. Thus allowing two more players to catch up. Nitin defeated IM Raahul V S and Semetei won against GM Duc Hoa Nguyen (VIE) to move to the top. Nithin Babu held the top seed and India's highest rated IM Aronyak Ghosh to a draw. The total cash prize fund in the festival is ₹4400000 + two cars, six bikes and 100 cycles, for Category A (>2000) it is ₹2000000. The top three prizes were ₹300000, ₹200000 and ₹150000 each. Six in pursuit at 6/8

International Masters Srihari L R, Nitin S of India, Uurtsaikh Agibileg (MGL) and Semetei Tologon Tegin (KGZ) share the lead with 6.5 points each at the end of the eighth round of the Athens of the East 4th International GM Chess tournament, organised by Ananthi Chess Academy, Madurai. Six players including the top seed IM Aronyak Ghosh and GM Alexei Fedorov are at a half a point behind the leaders.

 

In the seventh round, the clash between the top seeds Aronyak and Srihari ended in a quick draw, both players repeating the moves. But Agibileg defeated the other IM Srihari (Srihari L) to move to the forefront.

The sixth and seventh rounds on the fifth day witnessed two contrasting games from the former Asian Junior champion Deepan Chakkravarthy, the sixth round game exhibiting his best techniques against Allayar Shirliyev (TKM) and the seventh one plummeting from completely winning to a drawn and then to a total lost position against Nithin Babu of Kerala. Nithin moved to second position with the unbelievable win.

After conceding two draws in the fourth and fifth rounds, the top seed IM Aronyak Ghosh returned to winning ways by beating GM Manik Mikulas (SVK). He is trailing the leaders by half a point.

IM Nitin S and GM Duc Hoa Nguyen (VIE) drew their seventh round encounter to keep their chances alive.

IM Raahul V S defeated the upcoming youngster from Telangana to collect 5.5 points in seven rounds and join the close followers of the leaders.

IM Ratnakaran K lost to Pondicherry’s first and only IM Srihari L in the sixth round and fought a losing battle to V Sarveshwaran, with a bishop and three connected pawns against the latter’s queen.

A total of 156 players including 10 GMs, 23 IMs and 3 WIMs are taking part from 19 countries across the world in Category A (>2000). The tournament is being organized by Ananthi Chess Academy at Amika Hotel in Madurai, Tamil Nadu from 24th to 31st December 2024. The ten-round Swiss league Rating tournament has a time control of 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment from move no.1.
