Srihari L R convincingly clinches 4th Athens of the East GM 2024, Nitin second

IM Srihari L R scored an unbeaten 8/10 to win 4th Athens of the East GM Tournament 2024. He started the year 2024 by winning 14th Chennai GM Open 2023. Now he ended by winning this event. Srihari won both events convincingly. Six players scored 7.5/10 each. Out of them, IM Nitin S and IM Uurtsaikh Agibileg (MGL) secured second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. The champion drew with both eventual runners-up. The total cash prize fund in the festival is ₹4400000 + two cars, six bikes and 100 cycles, for Category A (>2000) it is ₹2000000. Srihari starts and ends 2024 in the same way

Tamil Nadu’s IM Srihari L R won the Athens of the East 4th International GM Chess Tournament, organised by Ananthi Chess Academy, at Amika Hotel Madurai. With a quick draw with grandmaster P Karthikeyan, he scored eight points to be declared as the outright winner. Besides winning a cash prize of three lacs rupees, Srihari gained a valuable ten rating points, inching towards the coveted 2500 rating.

IM Nitin S drew with the top seed IM Aronyak Ghosh to head the 7.5 score bracket players to be the runner-up. After beating the fourth seeded IM-elect Md. Imran, Nitin never looked back.

On the second board IM Uurtsaikh Agibileg (MGL) drew with IM Raahul V S to win the third place. Nitin and Agibileg received two lacs and one lac fifty thousand rupees respectively. Agilibeg’s seventh round win over IM Srihari L helped him to climb up.

The fourth and fifth places went to the Grandmasters Duc Hoa Nguyen (VIE) and P Karthikeyan who also collected 7.5 points each. Playing the black pieces, Duc Hoa, the Grandmaster from Vietnam outwitted the French International Master Sevan Buscara by threatening to promote his pawn on the 43rd move, forcing the latter to resign. He also defeated Vaidyanathan Kannan (USA) in the ninth round.

Karthikeyan also scored two wins in the eighth and ninth rounds over the reigning National Junior champion Arjun Adireddy and Nithin Babu respectively.

IM Semetei Tologon Tegin (KGZ) was unfortunate to blunder under time pressure to lose to the eventual winner. His win against GM Duc Hoa Nguyen (VIE) in Round 8, was a consolation for him.

Vaidyanathan Kannan (USA) increased his rating by 172.4 points, Nihal Swarna 166.4, Jval Saurin Patel 164.8 and Jai Sankar Subramanaian 149.6 points.

 

Mr. Velmurugan, Regional Sports Manager, Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu and Dr. Raja, District Sports Officer, Madurai were the chief guests and distributed the prizes in the presence of P Pragadesh, Tournament Director and Mr. Vpnesh Bhardwaj, Chief Arbiter. Pragadesh, the bold and dynamic organiser, has assured to have a bigger tournament next year. This year the tournament has provided 44 lacs of rupees, two cars, six bikes and one hundred cycles, an astonishing achievement.

A total of 156 players including 10 GMs, 23 IMs and 3 WIMs took part from 19 countries across the world in Category A (>2000). The tournament was organized by Ananthi Chess Academy at Amika Hotel in Madurai, Tamil Nadu from 24th to 31st December 2024. The ten-round Swiss league Rating tournament had a time control of 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment from move no.1.
