When we started ChessRanga Tactics back in 2024, the idea was simple. As a commentator, I get a front-row seat to some of the most beautiful tactics played in modern chess. Games from top tournaments are full of moments where a single precise move changes everything - and most of these moments vanish into databases, never to be seen again. I wanted to save them, one by one, in a form that would benefit the entire chess community.
That's how ChessRanga Tactics was born: a website where you solve positions from recent games of strong players. Every single puzzle is handpicked - no engine-generated fillers, no recycled classics you've seen a hundred times. Just fresh, instructive positions from real, over-the-board battles. Over time, the collection grew puzzle by puzzle, and today we have crossed 600 handpicked tactics - and counting!
And now, we're thrilled to unveil a completely revamped homepage that makes discovering and solving these puzzles better than ever. Here's a tour of what's new.
Tactic of the Day
Every day, we feature one special puzzle right at the top of the page. You'll see the position, the players involved, the themes at play, and a difficulty rating out of five stars. One click on "Solve Now" and you're in. It's the perfect way to start your daily chess routine - think of it as your morning cup of tactical coffee!
Special mention to the "Continue" button at the top - it magically takes you to the puzzle that you were solving last time you logged in!
Browse by Theme
Want to sharpen a specific skill? The new theme browser lets you filter puzzles by tactical motifs and patterns - Anastasia's Mate, Arabian Mate, Back Rank Mate, Bishop Endgames, Accurate Calculations, and many more. Each theme comes with its own beautiful visual, and there's a search bar if you're hunting for something specific. If you've always struggled with a particular mating pattern, this is where you fix it.

This is one of my favourite features. All puzzles are organized by the tournaments they came from - the Naroditsky Memorial 2026, the FIDE World Team Rapid and Blitz Championships 2026, the UzChess Cup 2026, and more. Just finished following a tournament? Now you can relive its most critical moments by solving the tactics yourself. It's like watching the highlights reel, except you get to find the winning moves.

Browse puzzles by player — from world-class grandmasters like Vladislav Artemiev and Bibisara Assaubayeva to rising Indian talents. Pick a player, and solve positions straight from their games. It's a wonderful way to study a player's style and test yourself against their calculation.

Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned tournament player, there's something for you. Puzzles are sorted into five difficulty bands, each mapped to a rating range:

Track Your Progress with Solved Statistics
The new dashboard shows you exactly where you stand. A clean visual breakdown tells you how many puzzles you've solved at each difficulty level, along with your overall progress through the entire collection. Watching that number climb is surprisingly addictive!
Build Your Streak 🔥
Consistency is the secret to improvement, and the new streak tracker keeps you honest. Solve puzzles daily and watch your streak grow. Miss a day, and the flame goes out! It's a small feature, but it's amazing how motivating that little fire icon can be.
Compete on the Leaderboard
Solving tactics is fun. Solving tactics competitively is even more fun! The new leaderboard shows the top solvers both weekly and all-time, complete with points and streaks. Your own rank is always displayed, so you know exactly how far you are from the podium. The weekly board resets regularly, which means everyone gets a fresh shot at the top spot.
Level Up with XP
Every puzzle you solve earns you XP, and XP takes you through a levels path — Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, and beyond. Your profile shows your current level, your XP progress, and exactly how much you need to unlock the next milestone. It turns your tactical training into a journey with clear goals along the way.
The Solving Experience — Where Puzzles Come Alive
The homepage is just the doorway. The solving page is where ChessRanga Tactics truly shines, because every puzzle comes with its full story.
When you open a puzzle, you don't just get a bare position. You see the names of both players, and complete game information - the event, the round, the date, and the final result. You know exactly where this moment came from. Was it a decisive round-nine encounter? A game played just days ago? It's all right there.
Every puzzle carries context. The full move list of the game is displayed alongside the board, often with annotations that tell you why this moment mattered. Some positions come with notes like "The crucial error that gave India its 98th GM" - because these aren't abstract exercises, they're turning points in real chess history.
Positions from the game - and from analysis. Here's a detail we're particularly proud of: not every instructive moment actually appears on the board during a game. Sometimes the most beautiful tactic hides in a variation - a line that could have happened. When a puzzle comes from analysis rather than the actual game, it's clearly marked with a "Variation" tag. That way, you always know whether you're solving a position the players faced over the board, or a hidden possibility lurking beneath the surface. Both are equally instructive - but honesty about the source matters to us.
Built for focused training. The solving page tracks your time and your tries for each puzzle, so you can measure not just whether you solved it, but how efficiently. And yes, there's a hint button - but here's the twist: it only unlocks after three tries! We want you to genuinely wrestle with the position first, because that struggle is where real improvement happens. Give it your honest best, and if the solution still eludes you, the hint is there to guide you home. Once you crack the puzzle, a satisfying "Solved" confirmation seals the deal.
