Himal Gusain dominates 1st Genova International Chess Festival 2024

Top seed IM Himal Gusain scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win 1st Genova International Open A 2024. He finished a full point ahead of the field. IM Vilka Sipila (FIN) and IM Conor E Murphy (IRL) scored 6.5/9 each. They secured second and third place according to tie-breaks. Himal defeated both runners-up in sixth and fifth round respectively. The total prize fund combining three groups was €7000. The top three prizes were €1500, €1000 and €800 each. The seven-day nine round Rating Open A (>2000) tournament was organized by Circolo scacchistico Luigi Centurini at Stadium Genova in Genova, Italy from 13th to 19th July 2024. IM Nitish Belurkar, WGM-elect WIM Sakshi Chitlange and CM Joel Paul Ganta are three more Indians to make a top ten finish. Kumaran Charan wins the 2nd ChessBase India Chess Festival Blitz Tournament in Hyderabad

On a day typically dedicated to relaxation, Hyderabad's chess community chose to ignore the National Lazy Day and celebrate the 2nd ChessBase India Chess Festival. The event was held in the loving memory of Bishan Singh Ji. The location was The Shri Ram Academy International School in Gachibowli. The event consisted of a puzzle-solving contest and a blitz tournament in which 132 and 213 players participated respectively. The day witnessed intense competition as well as heartwarming felicitation of all the key persons responsible for the growth of chess in Telangana. Read the article to know more about the event.

Vaishali set to take on World's best women at FIDE Women's GP in Tbilisi, Georgia

The first leg of the FIDE Women's Grand Prix 2024-25 will start today in Tbilisi, Georgia. GM Vaishali R will be the sole Indian participant in the fray. The 10-player round-robin tournament will feature GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR), GM Mariya Muzychuk (UKR), GM Nana Dzagnidze (GEO), IM Sarasadat Khademalsharieh (ESP), GM Alexandra Kosteniuk (SUI), IM Alina Kashlinskaya (POL), IM Bibisara Assaubayeva (KAZ), IM Lela Javakhishvili (GEO) and IM Stavroula Tsolakidou (GRE) along with the previously mentioned Vaishali. Anna is the highest rated player of the event. In the first round, Vaishali will face the lowest rated player in the field, Stavroula. Round 1 starts today from 3 p.m. local time, 4:30 p.m. IST. Nepomniachtchi, Firouzja and MVL top Saint Louis Rapid 2024

Ian Nepomniachtchi, Alireza Firouzja (FRA) and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA) top the Rapid portion of Grand Chess Tour Saint Louis Rapid and Blitz 2024. They are at 11/18 each. Levon Aronian (USA) is following them at sole fourth place 10/18. Wesley So (USA) and Hikaru Nakamura (USA) are at 9/18 each. Fabiano Caruana (USA) and Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) are having 8/18 each. Praggnanandhaa continues to struggle at the bottom of the points table 4/18. Apart from Praggnanandhaa the difference of score between the leaders and eighth place is only of three points. With 18 rounds of Blitz games left to be played, anything can happen. Deep Sengupta and Yuri Solodovnichenko are cochampions at ØBRO & CXU International 2024

GM Deep Sengupta and GM Yuri Solodovnichenko (UKR) scored 7/9 each to win ØBRO & CXU International 2024. Since tie-breaks were not applicable, both players shared first place. Deep got the better of Yuri in the penultmate round. GM Eduardas Rozentalis (LTU) and FM Nicolai Kistrup (DEN) scored 6.5/9 each. They shared third place. WGM Rakshitta Ravi scored her final IM-norm. She is now 78 Elo rating points away from becoming India's next International Master. The first prize was DKK 7500 / €1000 which was shared between Deep and Yuri. Kartavya Anadkat scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win Smt. Chanchal Dad Memorial Rating Open 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Arshpreet Singh, Bhaavan Kolla and Kishan Kumar scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed second to fourth respectively according to tie-breaks. Top two remained undefeated. The total prize fund was ₹500000. The top three prizes were ₹75000, ₹40000 and ₹25000 along with a trophy each. The five-day nine-round tournament was organized by District Chess Association Bhilwara at Sri Ramsnehi Palace Vatika in Bhilwara, Rajasthan from 24th to 28th July 2024. Saint Louis Rapid 2024 R4-6: Abdusattorov and Caruana play a Queen endgame for the ages

If you have to study only one game from the second day of Grand Chess Tour Saint Louis Rapid 2024, then it would be the endgame between Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) and Fabiano Caruana (USA). Sure, the former World Rapid champion should have won that game in a thousand different ways. The fact of the matter is, it was not easy to calculate precisely in less time. It is an extremely complex queen endgame which Dr. GM Karsten Mueller would love to analyze and undoubtedly will go into many future endgame books. On the 10th of August, ChessBase India successfully organized the 2nd Chess Festival at the Shri Ram Academy International School in Hyderabad. The event consisted of a puzzle -solving contest, a Blitz tournament, and a felicitation ceremony. A total of 132 players participated in the event. The highlight of the tournament was the felicitation event where the chief guests GM Arjun Erigaisi and GM Harika Dronavalli, the chess players from Telangana who performed exceptionally on the National and International level in last year, coaches, organizers, journalists, and visionaries in the chess field were felicitated. Dinesh Rajan M scored 7.5/9 to win Aix-en-Provence Dole Trophy Below 2200 International 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. Sham R and Elise Tomasi (FRA) scored 7/9 each. They secured second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of three tournaments was €40000, €3120 for Group B. The top three prizes were €800, €550 and €350 along with a trophy each. It was organized by Echiquier du Roy René in Aix-en-Provence, France from 20th to 28th July 2024. Aronyak Ghosh wins 36th All India Railway Individual Championship 2024

Four players - IM Aronyak Ghosh (Eastern Railway), GM Diptayan Ghosh (Eastern Railway), IM Nitin S (Southern Railway) and GM Mitrabha Guha (Metro) scored 5.5/7 each at 36th All India Railway Individual Chess Championship 2024. The highest rated IM of the country, Aronyak won the tournament on tie-breaks. The remaining three were placed second to fourth respectively. Aronyak drew with the eventual runner-up, Nitin in the final round to become the champion. Top three remained undefeated. Saint Louis Rapid 2024 R1-3: A tough start for Praggnanandhaa

R Praggnanandhaa had a rough start at Grand Chess Tour Saint Louis Rapid 2024. He drew against Levon Aronian (USA) then lost his next two games against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA) and Ian Nepomniachtchi. In the first two games, he got himself a better position. Yet he was unable to capitalize on his chances. His tough form continues from Biel GMT. MVL has gained an early sole lead scoring 5/6. He is closely followed by Nepomniachtchi, Aronian and Leinier Dominguez Perez (USA) at 4/6 each. The defending champion, Fabiano Caruana (USA) also had a forgettable start. He could only muster 1/6. GM Pranesh M scored 7.5/9 to win Aix-en-Provence Dole Trophy International A (>2100) 2024. It was the biggest chess tournament in France in a long time. Four players - GM Pierre Laurent-Paoli (FRA), GM Abhimanyu Puranik, GM Maxime Lagarde (FRA) and GM Bharath Subramaniyam H scored 7/9 each. They were placed second to fifth respectively according to tie-breaks. Pranesh defeated compatriot Iniyan in the final round to become. Abhimanyu's draw against Pierre, helped Pranesh to become champion. Pierre was the only player to beat the eventual champion, Pranesh. The total prize fund of three tournaments was €40000, €30000 for Group A. The top three prizes were €8000, €5500 and €3500 along with a trophy each. The defending champion, Fabiano Caruana (USA) will be seen in action along with Hikaru Nakamura (USA), Ian Nepomniachtchi, Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB), Alireza Firouzja (FRA), Wesley So (USA), R Praggnanandhaa, Leinier Dominguez Perez (USA), Levon Aronian (USA) and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA). Eight players scored 8/9 at 1st Pro Skillcraft Rapid Rating Open 2024. They are - IM Anuj Shrivatri, IM Aaditya Dhingra, Sudhir Kumar Sinha, IM Mayank Chakraborty, Santu Mondal, IM Aaradhya Garg, Harish Sharma and Daksh Goyal. Anuj won the tournament on tie-breaks. The remaining seven were placed second to eighth respectively. Anuj, Aaditya, Santu and Aaradhya remained undefeated. The total prize fund was ₹640000. The top three prizes were ₹50000, ₹30000 and ₹20000 along with a huge trophy each. The tournament was organized by Skillcraft and Eminent Chess Academy at Thyagraj Indoor Stadium in New Delhi on 27th and 28th July 2024.
