Odisha Open R8: Alexei emerges sole leader, Deepan and Vignesh Advaith in pursuit

GM Alexei Fedorov defeated one of his coleaders, IM Neelash Saha to gain sole lead 7/8 at Odisha Open 2024 Category A. Neelash could not get out of the gate as he misplayed in the opening. GM Deepan Chakkravarthy defeated IM Semetei Tologon Tegin (KGZ) to move his score 6.5/8. IM Sambit Panda misplayed in a winning position against Vignesh Advaith Vemula. The teenager snatched a win from the jaws of defeat. He is also at 6.5/8. FM Quoc Hy Nguyen (VIE) drew with GM Cristhian Camilo Rios Gomez (COL) to stay in the hunt 6.5/8. Vignesh swindles Sambit

IM Srihari L handed GM Mitrabha Guha his first loss of the event. FM Setumadhav Yellumahanthi defeated IM Kaustuv Kundu. IM Ameya Audi won his game against GM Manik Mikulas. WIM Mrudul Dehankar continues her good run as she won convincingly against GM Attila Czebe (HUN).

IM Neelash Saha (2458) needed to return his king back to e8. Instead, he went 13...Kg8? which put his king into more peril. 14.Bf4 Qb6 15.Ng3 e5 16.Bg5 h6 17.Qf3 e4 18.Nxe4 dxe4 19.Qxe4 gxf5 20.Rxf5 Qe6 21.Rc5 Nc6 22.Bc4 and things fell apart for Black.

IM Semetei Tologon Tegin (KGZ, 2358) made an incorrect rook exchange offer 26...Rd8? 27.Rxd8+ Nxd8 28.Bf4 Nc6 29.Bxh6 Bxf6 30.exf6 and White had no trouble converting his advantage into a win.

In a winning position, IM Sambit Panda (2381) missed a win when he played 26.Qh7 Qe7 27.Bb4?? allowing Black to get back in the game Nxb4 28.axb4 f5 29.Qxg6+ Kd7 30.Qh5 Rh8 31.Qe2 Qxb4 32.Nf3 Rag8 33.Kf2 Bh4+ 34.Ke3 f4+ and it's over. 26.Rdf3 and Vignesh Advaith Vemula (2276) would have been on the brink of a loss.
