Vedant Panesar victorious at Tata Steel Qualifiers 2025

FM Vedant Panesar scored an unbeaten 6/9 to win Tata Steel Chess Qualifiers 2025. This triumph earned him a place in the Challengers section of 2026 edition. He finished a half point ahead of the field. FM Leandro Slagboom (NED) and FM Tim Grutter (NED) scored 5.5/9 each. They secured second and third place respectively. The top three prizes were New in Chess book voucher worth €90, €60 and €40 each respectively. More than the prize fund, advancing to the Challengers is a big deal for the champion. FM Nikhil Dixit and FM Ritvik Krishnan scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 each at 1st Chessniti Academy and The Playce Rapid Rating Open 2025. Nikhil won the tournament due to better tie-break scores. Ritvik secured second place. FM Anirudhha Potawad, CM Vedant Pimpalkhare and Nameet Chavan scored 8/9 each. They were placed third, fourth and fifth respectively. The total cash prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹20000 + trophy, ₹10000 and ₹8000 each respectively. The one-day nine round Rating Open tournament was organized by Chessniti Academy and The Playce at Marathon Futurex in Mumbai, Maharashtra on 26th January 2025. The 87th Tata Steel Masters 2025 is virtually guaranteed to have a winner between D Gukesh and R Praggnanandhaa. Yes, there is a mathematical possibility of Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) catching up with both of them and a three-way Playoff, only if both leaders lose their last round game which is practically highly unlikely scenario. Praggnanandhaa squashed Alexey Sarana (SRB) in 29 moves in the penultimate round. Gukesh drew with Jorden van Foreest (NED) which could have gone either player's way. Devindya Oshini Gunawardhana became the youngest Woman International Master of Sri Lanka last year. She was only 12 years 5 months old at that time. She also became the first Sri Lankan to win a Gold medal at a World Cadets tournament. Currently, she is Sri Lanka no.4 among active players of her country. Her dream is to become a Grandmaster and Women's World Champion. However, to achieve it she needs to travel a lot and play strong tournaments to increase rating and have norm chances. The 18th World Champion, D Gukesh is in a terrific form. He scored his second consecutive win at 87th Tata Steel Masters 2025. Gukesh surprised his opponent with 1...d6 in response to 1.e4. Max Warmerdam (NED) opted for 2.g3. Gukesh got a bit surprised momentarily but he realized that he must have prepared it for some other game before. A positional mistake of incorrect bishop trade offer with Gukesh's bad bishop, turned things in the leader's way. He converted his advantage smoothly to maintain his sole lead 7.5/10. R Praggnanandhaa bounced back with a win against Vladimi Fedoseev (SLO) in a wild game. Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) also had a crazy battle against Alexey Sarana (SRB) to stay in pursuit 7/10. They secured second to seventh place respectively according to tie-breaks. Swapnaneel Dowerah scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win DDCA Golden Jubilee Rapid Rating Open 2025. Five players - Rintu Brahma, Abhirup Saikia, Neelabh Jyoti Borthakur, Bijit Chetia and Dhruv Phukan scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed second to sixth respectively according to tie-breaks. Swapnaneel defeated Rintu in the penultimate and drew with Abhirup in the last round. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹160000. The top three prizes were ₹20000, ₹15000 and ₹13000 along with a trophy each respectively. D Gukesh defeated his compatriot, Leon Luke Mendonca in Round 9 of 87th Tata Steel Masters 2025 to gain sole lead 6.5/9. The world champion shared that he did not show anything special in the opening. However, a few positional inaccuracies by his opponent, allowed him to seize his advantage and outplay him. Gukesh's coleader, R Praggnanandhaa suffered his first loss of the event against Anish Giri (NED). Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) drew with World no.2, Fabiano Caruana (USA). Vladimir Fedoseev (SLO) defeated Pentala Harikrishna to join the chase with Abdusattorov. In the Challengers, IM Divya Deshmukh had a solid draw against GM R Vaishali.
