Senthil Maran K becomes the latest International Master of India

FM Senthil Maran K became the latest International Master of India. The 25-year-old crossed the 2400 and earned his final IM-norm at the same event - Slovakia Open Piestany 2024. The Chennai lad got a published rating of 2411 in the August FIDE Rating list. The first IM-norm was scored at 26th Abu Dhabi Masters 2019 in UAE. Almost four years later, he secured his second IM-norm at 96th Paris IdF Masters 2023. Exactly a year later he earned his final IM-norm with a round to spare on 16th July in Slovakia. When he defeated GM Titas Stremavicius (LTU) in the third round, he surpassed 2400 in the live ratings. Senthil's journey will continue towards the coveted GM title. Photo: Aditya Sur Roy

Iniyan clinches Latvian Chess Federation and FIDE 100-Year Anniversary Blitz Open 2024, Ilamparthi third

GM Pa Iniyan scored 10/11 to become a clear champion at Latvian Chess Federation & FIDE 100-Year Anniversary Blitz Tournament 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the field. IM Jakob Leon Pajekon (GER) scored sole 9.5/11 to secure second place. IM Ilamparthi A R finished third scoring 9/11. Ilamparthi was the only player to beat Iniyan in the ninth round. The total prize fund for the Blitz event was €1200. The first prize was €170 and a trophy. FM Niranjan Navalgund earned his final IM-norm in the GM Open A tournament with a fantastic performance. Karthik Venkataraman conquers 61st National Championship 2024

GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly (PSPB) and IM Aronyak Ghosh (RSPB) drew with IM Himal Gusain (RSPB) and GM Lalit Rohit (RSPB) respectively in the last round. It created a window of opportunity for GM Karthik Venkataraman (AP) to win the tournament. He defeated the reigning Commonwealth champion, GM Mitrabha Guha (RSPB) to become the champion. Surya finished second on tie-breaks. IM Neelash Saha (RSPB) scored a comfortable win over IM Sammed Shete (MAH) to finish third. The top three finishers scored 9/11 each. Sinquefield Cup R8: Alireza Firouzja wins Grand Chess Tour 2024 with a round to spare

All five games of the penultimate round at Grand Chess Tour Sinquefield Cup 2024 ended in draws. Thus Alireza Firouzja (FRA) won the 2024 season of Grand Chess Tour with a round to spare. He still has a full point lead 5.5/8, going into the final round. Only Fabiano Caruana (USA) has a mathematical chance of catching him. Firouzja had the longest draw of the round when three out of the five games were drawn in 28 moves or less. Firouzja will face Praggnanandhaa in the last round. Avirat Chauhan wins 1st Uin Sports Rating Open 2024

9-year-old Avirat Chauhan and Shriraj Bhosale scored 7.5/9 each at 1st Uin Sports Rating Open 2024. The former National Under-8 Open champion, remained undefeated and won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. Shriraj secured second place. Six players scored 7/9 each. Out of them, Sourabh Mhamane was adjudged third. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹601000. The top three prizes were ₹71000, ₹50000 and ₹30000 along with a trophy each. The six-day nine-round tournament was organized by Uinsports India Pvt. Ltd.  at MIT Academy of Engineering in Pune, Maharashtra from 30th July to 4th August 2024. This was Avirat's first tournament triumph of the year.

Meet the 'Deo' who donated books to the Temple of Chess

On the 15th of August 2024, as Indians celebrated Independence Day, another celebration quietly took place in Mumbai. While one group was busy hoisting the National Flag, the other group was busy cutting the ribbon to launch a special place. GM Vidit Gujrathi inaugurated the ‘Temple of Chess’, a new concept by ChessBase India for all chess lovers. The main attraction of this place is the vast collection of books. A very kind and generous person named Deodatta Modak from Nashik donated thousands of books to this temple. ChessBase India's Rasika Ratnaparkhi traveled to the home of Deodatta Modak and had the privilege of speaking with him about his chess journey, book collection, and his views on the Temple of Chess. Alireza Firouzja (FRA) defeated Ding Liren (CHN) to increase his sole lead 5/7 at Grand Chess Tour Sinquefield Cup 2024. The world champion broke the center wide open at an inopportune moment. It cost him two pawns and made things worse. Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) scored his first win of the event against Wesley So (USA). So also lost his game similarly when he dropped one pawn too many. It cost him the game. Fabiano Caruana (USA) missed an opportunity to push for a win against D Gukesh. Praggnanandhaa made a quick 19-move draw against Ian Nepomniachtchi. GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly (PSPB) was held to a draw by IM Aronyak Ghosh (RSPB) in the penultimate round of 61st National Championship. IM Neelash Saha (RSPB) outplayed GM Sethuraman S P (PSPB) after the latter made a mistake in the endgame. Thus, dashing Sethuraman's hopes of retaining the crown. IM Himal Gusain (RSPB) defeated Utkal Ranjan Sahoo (ODI) by playing some attacking chess. He will pose the final challenge to Surya who is aiming for his seventh National title. GM Karthik Venkataraman (AP) defeated IM Ajay Karthikeyan (TN). GM Lalit Rohit (PSPB) made a short work of IM Nitin S (RSPB) in just 21 moves. Final Round 11 starts today at 10:30 a.m. IST. Aleksandar Indjic wins Timișoara Grand Prix Rapid 2024 via Armageddon, Leon Luke Mendonca second

GM Aleksandar Indjic (SRB) and GM Leon Luke Mendonca scored 8.5/10 each at Timișoara Grand Prix Rapid 2024. Indjic won the Armageddon with black pieces against Leon to become the champion. This is the fourth leg of the Romania GP 2024. Nine players scored 8/10. GM Gleb Dudin (HUN) secured third prize due to better tie-break score. The total prize fund of the tournament was €30000. The top three prizes were €5000, €3000 and €2000 each respectively. A total of 378 players including 36 GMs, 26 IMs, 5 WGMs and 2 WIMs participated from 25 countries across the world. He played enterprising chess against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA). However, there was no clear path for him to earn a full point. Alireza Firouzja (FRA) drew with Wesley So (USA) to maintain his sole lead 4/6. Ian Nepomniachtchi fell for a very common idea in the Sicilian Dragon. He made a mistake which club level players make, allowing Fabiano Caruana (USA) to score a win. Both Caruana and So are now at 3.5/6, a half point behind the sole leader. India's highest rated IM Aronyak Ghosh (RSPB) played outstanding positional chess to beat FM Arjun Adireddy (TEL). He is now just a half point behind 7.5/9 the sole leader, GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly (PSPB) 8/9. Surya drew with his unit-mate GM Sethuraman S P (PSPB). Aronyak will face Surya in the penultimate round. IM Sammed Jaykumar Shete (MAH) sacrificed an exchange, used his strong knights to stir up trouble and beat GM Pa Iniyan (TN). Currently, 13 players are at 7/9 each. Suvradeepta Das scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win XVIII Santa Eugenia de Ter Below 2000 Rating Tournament 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. Ambarish Sharma scored sole 7/9 to secure second place. Juan Alber Garcia Caro (CAT) edged past three other players to finish third on tie-breaks. The total prize fund was €3100. The top three prizes were €750, €500 and €250 along with a trophy each. The five-day nine-round tournament was organized by Club d'Escacs Santa Eugènia at Espai Marfa in Santa Eugenia de Ter, Catalan, Spain from 29th July to 2nd August 2024. Srinath Rao S V wins Jönköping Chess Festival 2024

IM Srinath Rao S V scored 7.5/9 to win Jönköping Chess Festival 2024 - Standard. FM Emerik Vapenstad Roulet-Dubonnet (NOR) also scored 7.5/9. The Norwegian was placed second according to tie-breaks. IM Vilka Sipila (FIN) scored sole 7/9 to finish third. Only Emerik remained undefeated among the top three. The top three prizes were SEK 7000 + trophy, 5000 and 3000 along with a medal each. The eight-day nine-round tournament was organized by FT NA Saadah Ahmad and Jordanian Swedish Chess Academy at Quality Hotel Match in Jönköping, Sweden from 25th July to 1st August 2024 This was Srinath's fourth overall, third individual rating tournament triumph of the year. GM Diptayan Ghosh (RSPB) brought an end to GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly's (PSPB) unbeaten streak in Round 8 of 61st National Championship 2024. Both players tried their best to squeeze a win, yet neither budged to slip for a moment. Hence the game ended in a draw. Two of the strongest IMs of the country - Himal Gusain (RSPB) and Aronyak Ghosh (RSPB) held GM Sethuraman S P (PSPB) and GM Karthik Venkataraman (AP) to a draw each respectively. IM Ajay Karthikeyan (TN) outplayed GM Abhijeet Gupta (PSPB). GM Neelotpal Das (PSPB) missed a win against GM Mitrabha Guha (RSPB).
