Commonwealth 2024: Sethuraman wins Gold, Vignesh N R Silver and India clinches a historic 107 medals
GM Sethuraman S P and GM Vignesh N R scored an unbeaten 7/9 each at Commonwealth Chess Championship 2024 in the Open category. Sethuraman won Gold on tie-breaks, Vignesh had to settle for Silver. Their sixth round battle against each other ended in a draw. WGM Mary Ann Gomes won the Women's event scoring 5.5/9. She also won a Silver medal each in both Rapid and Blitz events. WGM-elect WIM Sakshi Chitlange won Silver in Classical, Bronze in Rapid and Gold in Blitz. IM Soumya Swaminathan claimed Bronze. GM Mitrabha Guha won Gold in the inaugural Rapid event. Silver for GM Pa Iniyan and GM Laxman R R got Bronze. GM Swapnil Dhopade claimed Gold in Blitz. Silver for GM Mitrabha Guha and IM Hari Madhavan N B Bronze. India wins a lot of medals at Asian Youth, Western Asian Youth and World Youth. They range anything between 30 and 60. However, this time, Indian players have won a staggering 107 medals. All of them were individual medals and most importantly Indian players won a medal in each category (except Veterans as no veteran player was there in Rapid). The top three prizes in the Open category were LKR 650000, 500000 and 400000 each. In Women and Under-20 category, they were LKR 150000, 100000 and 50000 each. Coaches of the Indian team were - GM Ankit Rajpara and WFM Sangeetha M R. Head of Delegations - Manish Kumar, Joint Secretary, AICF.
Classical: Open - Gold and Silver
GM Sethuraman S P and GM Vignesh N R scored an unbeaten 7/9 each. Their sixth round battle against each other ended in a draw. Sethuraman won Gold on tie-breaks, Vignesh Silver. IM Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage and previous edition's Bronze medal winner, GM Deepan Chakkravarthy scored 6.5/9 each. Ranindu claimed Bronze due to better tie-break score.

Their sole draw was against each other in the fourth round. Ayaan won Gold in Under-8 Open on tie-breaks, Sarbartho Silver. They both finished a staggering 2.5 points ahead of the competition.
