World Junior 2024 R5: Divya destroys Narmin, joins the lead with Ayan

IM Divya Deshmukh defeated previous round sole leader Narmin Abdinova (AZE) in Round 5 of FIDE World Junior 2024 Girls. The top seed hunted her king successfully and checkmated her on 28th move. WIM Ayan Allahverdiyeva (AZE) won against WIM Sofiia Hryzlova (SUI) to join Divya in the lead 4.5/5. They are closely followed by eleven girls including four Indians - WFM Rindhiya V, Kashthuri Bhai R, WFM Sachi Jain and Mrittika Mallick at 4/5 each. In the Open event, IM Mayank Chakraborty held the sole leader, GM Jose Gabriel Cardoso Cardoso (COL) to an exciting draw in the Ruy Lopez Berlin Defence. IM Sanket Chakravarty, IM Ayush Sharma, FM Arjun Adireddy and Harshit Pawar drew with GM Jan Subelj (SLO), GM Emin Ohanyan (ARM), GM Aditya Samant and GM Luka Budisavljevic (SRB) respectively. Among the Girls, Kashthuri Bhai R and WFM Rindhiya V continues their good form. They drew against the former European Youth Under-18 Gold medalist WIM Mariam Mkrtchyan (ARM) and WGM Beloslava Krasteva (BUL) respectively.
