World Junior 2024 R2: Dakshita Kumawat stuns Rakshitta Ravi

by Shahid Ahmed - 04/06/2024

Dakshita Kumawat scored the biggest upset of FIDE World Junior 2024 Round 2. She found a nice tactic after her opponent WGM Rakshitta Ravi incorrectly pushed a pawn and limited her own bishop's movement. WFM Bhagyashree Patil drew a back and forth game against third seeded WGM Beloslava Krasteva (BUL). Both had their fair share of chances, Bhagyashree having more than her opponent. In the Open section, IM Ayush Sharma missed a very good chance to seize his advantage against IM Rudik Makarian. Mukund Hemant Agarwal made a nice save against IM Ilamparthi A R. Jeet Shah defeated IM Ethan Vaz. Round 3 starts today from 3 p.m. IST. Photo: Aryan Nanda

Shahil and Harshad draw against GMs

IM Shahil Dey and FM Harshad S drew against GM Jan Subelj (SLO) and GM Aditya Samant respectively. Harshit Pawar continues his great start. He drew with IM Anuj Shrivatri. Daksh Goyal made another escape. This time he drew with IM Aleksandr Domalchuk-Jonasson (ISL).

Dakshita - Rakshitta

Position after 23...c5?

Dakshita Kumawat (1928) found a nice tactic 24.Nd5 after her opponent WGM Rakshitta Ravi (2271) erred 24...c5? Nd5 threatens Ne7 fork and also c3 trapping Black's bishop, leaving Black with no choice but to sacrifice the exchange. The game continued 24...Bb5 25.c4 Rxd5 26.exd5 White converted her advantage into a win.

Beloslava - Bhagyashree

Position after 26.Rh4

WFM Bhagyashree Patil (1929) needed to improve her dark square bishop's position. 26...Bb6 pinning the d4-pawn against the queen and king would have been ideal for Black. The game continued 26...Rd6 27.Ne4 Bxe4 28.Rxe4 Qd7 29.Rxe8+ Qxe8 30.Rf3 Rd7? turned things in White's favor 31.Bf5! Nd5 32.Bxd7 Qxd7 after a back and forth play, the game ended in a draw via perpetual check.

Rudik - Ayush

Position after 37...Qf4

38.Qxf4 Rxf4 39.Rxa7 is fine for White. Instead, IM Rudik Makarian (2524) went for 38.Ng5? Rxd6 39.Qxf4 Rxf4 gave a substantial advantage to IM Ayush Sharma (2325). However, he could not convert his advantage and the game ended in a draw.

Ilamparthi - Mukund

Position after 22...Nc3+

Mukund Hemant Agarwal (2196) found a nice response 22...Nc3+ to IM Ilamparthi A R's (2446) 22.Nxf7. White needed to find the counter-intuitive 23.Ka1 to maintain his decisive advantage. Instead, 23.Kc1 Nxd1 24.Kxd1 b3 25.axb3 Rxb3 26.cxb3 Qc1+ 27.Ke2 Qxb2+ 28.Ke3 Qxf2+ 29.Kxf2 Bxf7 and the game meandered into a draw.

Jeet - Ethan

Position after 24...Bb4?

IM Ethan Vaz (2420) made a mistake 24...Bb4? His opponent Jeet Shah (1946) capitalized on his opportunity 25.h3 Nxe3 26.Nxe3 Rfd8 27.Rxa6 bxa6 28.Rxb4 and White used the power of his double knights against the rook to win the game.
