1st Bangalore GM 2024 R7: Sethuraman and Short make it a four-way with Abhijeet and Mitrabha

Top seed GM Abhijeet Gupta made a quick draw against GM Mitrabha Guha in the seventh round of 1st Bangalore GM 2024. It allowed GM Sethuraman S P and GM Nigel Short to catch up with them. Iniyan loosened his grip on the position against Sethuraman which allowed his opponent to get back in the game. The English legend defeated IM Ilamparthi A R with ease. The four leaders 6/7 will face each other in the eighth round - Sethuraman vs Abhijeet and Mitrabha vs Short. Untitled Nithin Babu continues his great momentum. Nithin Babu continues his impressive run

GM Diptayan Ghosh ended IM P Saravana Krishan's unbeaten run. He needed to find precise continuation in an interesting knight vs bishop endgame to secure a draw. Pushkar Dere got back to his winning ways by defeating IM Kaustuv Kundu.

GM Sethuraman S P persevered a tough position to win against GM Iniyan Pa

The only time GM Iniyan Pa (2515) defeated GM Sethuraman S P (2594) in a Classical rated game was almost five years ago. Although Iniyan managed to get a firm grip on the position, he could not maintain it with his bishop pair.

26.a3? dropped the momentum for White as Black got an opportunity to regroup Rc8 27.Bb3 Nd7 28.Qg5 Nxe5 29.Qxe5 Black got rid of one of the dangerous bishop which reduced the intensity of the attack. What White needed to do 26.Qh6 Raf8 27.Rc1 a5 28.Rg2 to maintain the pressure.

The eight-day ten round GM tournament is being organized by Bengaluru Urban District Chess Association at Sri Kanteerava Indoor Stadium in Bengaluru, Karnataka from 18th to 26th January 2024. The time control of the event is 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment per move.
