The Saravana Krishnan fireworks at Sivakasi!

At the Hatsun Idhayam 2nd SCS Fide rating tournament held in Sivakasi, Saravana Krishnan was not the favourite to win the title. He started as the fifth seed with one GM and three IMs ahead of him. But such statistics didn't matter for the boy from Tamil Nadu, who played some scintillating chess to win the tournament with a score of 8.0/9. Ram S. Krishnan scored the same points but had to settle for the second spot. Cheating incident mars Delhi under 1600

After winning a roller coaster game in the final round at a below 1600 tournament, Nitin Pai went to the arbiter M.S. Gopakumar to share his excitement, but the chief arbiter had something even more interesting to tell. He had busted a cheat on the top board! An otherwise well organised event was marred by a cheating incident caught red handed by the vigilant arbiters of the Delhi Chess Association.

Sangli: Sameer Kathmale steamrolls the field

The Southern Maharashtrian city of Sangli has been a major hub of Indian chess for well over four decades. Continuing the long tradition, the 49th edition of the Late Babukaka Shirgaonkar Memorial, Sangli’s marquee event, was held from 6th to 11th May. A total of 180 players participated, with the local boy IM Sameer Kathmale ‘doing a Caruana’ and winning the event in a dominant fashion! Pictorial report with Kathmale’s analysis.

Bharat Singh Chauhan is a noted International Organiser and the President of Delhi Chess Association. He is also the CEO of the All India Chess Federation (AICF), Deputy President of the Asian Chess Federation, Chairman of the Commonwealth Chess Association, and the Chairman of the FIDE Technical Commission. To the chessplayers in India, he is better known as the organiser of the best tournament in India in terms of quality and the prize fund. The forty-fourth edition of the Tamil Nadu State Women’s Chess Championship was organised by the Tiruvarur District Chess Association on behalf of the Tamil Nadu State Chess Association. The Tournament attracted 112 Entries out of which 84 players were rated (!). Check out this illustrated report.

Asian Juniors: Aravindh and Uurtsaikh Asian Champions

By the end of the seventh round, the tournament had turned into a street fight in both the sections and the games were critical, played under extreme pressure. In the end, there was a tie for the top spot between two young grandmasters—Narayanan and Aravindh, which the latter won on tie-break. Mongolian girl Uuriintuya Uurtsaikh took gold with 7.0/9. The Asian Blitz Championship was won by S.L. Narayanan and Vaishali R. An illustrated report.

India has heard of Panama Papers scandal, that reportedly caught some Indian names red handed. A new set of data was released this week. The data, collated by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), comes from the Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca. It is among more than 200,000 offshore account details that went online at 7pm on Monday. And chess has a glaring presence in the leaks!
