Any Time Chess - A brand new concept for chess education

When Tarun and Trisha Kanyamarala started playing chess, they faced a problem - chess coaching was too expensive and even if they went for it the coaches were not able to give them dedicated attention. In such a scenario, how should they improve? The kids came up with a novel concept of ATC (Any time Chess). They invited players to come at one place and practice chess together. For this they even created their own ATC ratings and kept it as affordable as Rs.10 per game! As players started pouring in Tarun and Trisha got great practice at their home with a wide range of players which helped them to become stronger chess players.

India's best visually challenged player Kishan Gangolli about to quit chess

Kishan Gangolli is 75% visually challenged. But it has not stopped him from pursuing his passion - the game of chess. He is the five-time national blind champion, current Asian champion and two-time Olympiad medal winner. He is, perhaps, the greatest blind chess player that India has ever produced. The 25-year-old has always given the priority to chess over education. But, he has never received any recognition, sponsorship or support. Very reluctantly he has made a decision to quit chess and study for IAS. Can we save our star player? 

19 players from Maharashtra feted with the Shiv Chhatrapati Award

The highest sporting honour for any sportsplayer in Maharashtra is the Shiv Chhatrapati awards. Since last three years because of some irregularities, the award had been stopped. All Marathi Chess Association (AMCA) along with senior players and administrators of Maharashtra chess convinced the Government that different grading system should be put in place for chess players to receive the award. Hence all the GMs, IMs, WGMs and WIMs in the last five years received this prestigious award. Pranav becomes the second 11-year-old to score an IM norm at First Friday!

The First Friday IM norm closed Round Robin tournament in Kuala Lumpur organized by Peter Long had reached its third edition in February. The tournament is a small one consisting of just 10 players, but its repercussions on Indian chess are pretty huge. Two of our biggest talents D.Gukesh and V. Pranav made their maiden IM norms at this event. Thanks to this achievement their chess careers get a tremendous boost! Kishan Gangolli's fifth straight National 'A' Blind victory

He didn't come so well prepared for the event, but it didn't matter. Kishan Gangolli is in a class of his own and without much ado became the national blind champion for the fifth consecutive time! Ashvin Makwana from Vadodara grabbed the second place, Soundarya Pradhan was third and Aryan Joshi fourth. The fight for the fifth spot was intense in the last round and was taken by Subhendu Patra. These five players will represent India in World Team Championships in Bulgaria later this year. The tournament which had no sponsor at the start was funded by 114 individuals and the total collection was Rs.5,47,053. A wonderful collective achievement.

PSPB wins National Team 2018 with a perfect score

PSPB always performed strong in National Team Championship. However, this time they finished with 100% score 18/18 asnd 14/14 in both open and women's section respectively. Airport Authority of India scored 14/18 and finished in the 2nd position. Both RSPB-A and RSPB- B finished at 13/18 each. However due to a better tie-break score RSPB-B finished at 3rd position and RSPB-A at 4th. In the women's section, Air India finished at 2nd position with a score of 11/14 and Airport Authority of India scored 10/14 to secure 3rd position. All ten players of PSPB got a Board Prize each, followed by Airport Authority of India who got seven and Air India got five. On 18th of January 2018 ChessBase India completed two years of existence. We held a Facebook contest where we asked people to tell us the reason why they loved ChessBase India. We got an overwhelming response with more than 75 people sending in their reasons. We went through all of them carefully. There were three ChessBase India t-shirts to be won. We thought about all the comments carefully and chose the three winners. Of course, it was not easy and there were many more comments which were close to winning the prize. We have mentioned them as well in this article.  

Rahul Srivathsav becomes an IM at the age 15 years and 9 days

He was rated 2295 around August 2017 with no IM norms. Rahul Srivathsav stunned everyone by gained over 100 Elo points and gaining all his three IM norms within 6 months! PSPB wins National Team 2018 with a round to spare

PSPB wins National Team Chess Championship 2018 in both Open and Women's category with a round to spare. In both sections, PSPB maintainted 100% Match Point. PSPB won both 7th and 8th rounds emphatically when they defeated AAI 0.5-3.5 and whitewashed Odisha-KIIT team by 4-0. PSPB Women's team defeated LIC by small margin 1.5-2.5 but they also whitewashed KIIT-Odisha Women's team by 4-0, replicating Men's team score in the penultimate round. Adhiban remained a spearhead for the men's team scoring 7.5/8, followed closely by Murali scoring 6/7 so far. Among the women, Eesha and Nisha have been the spearheads where both scored 4.5/5 till now. PSPB maintains their lead at National Team 2018

PSPB stays ahead of the pack as they maintain a perfect Match Point in both Open and Women's category after the conclusion of 6th and 4th round respectively. Both Adhiban and Ganguly won both of their games to ensure PSPB wins each round emphatically. GM Sriram Jha of LIC, had to succumb to two draws in the 5th and 6th round today against two untitled players, Kaustuv Kundu of Bengal Chess-B and Baivab Mishra of Odisha-A. AAI jumped to the second spot after they whitewashed both Bengal Chess-A and Odisha-KIIT in consecutive rounds and LIC jumped to the third spot after they won both of their rounds. Among Women, AAI jumped to second position after Tamil Nadu lost to them 1-3 and LIC jumped to the third spot as Odisha MCF-5 lost by 1-3 score, making top 3 standings in both Open and Women's category exactly the same after the conclusion of round 6 in Open and round 4 in Women's category. GM Sriram Jha wins it big in Jaipur

A big tournament was held in Jaipur in the memory of Ankit and Sakshi Bhargava from the 29th of January to 2nd of February 2018. Four grandmasters - Himanshu Sharma, Saptarshi Roy Chowdhury, Pravin Thipsay and Sriram Jha, and three IMs Sayantan Das, Suvrajit Saha and Dinesh Kumar Sharma took part. The event was closely contested and three players finished with the same score of 8.0/9. It is GM Sriram Jha who won the event with a superior tiebreak and took home the top prize of Rs.80,000/-. We have a report with pictures, game analysis and information of all the prize winners sent to us by Rishi Kaushik. 

Vidit Gujrathi is the brand ambassador for blind chess in India

23-year-olds on non-working days are supposed to be having fun with their friends, or go out shopping or just having a relaxed time. But not Vidit Gujrathi. India's latest chess sensation proved that he was not just an excellent chess player (his rating of 2726 justifies this), but he is also a wonderful human being as he pledged his time and effort to spreading blind chess in India. He will be the brand ambassador of the All India Chess Federation for the Blind (AICFB) and his main task will involve boosting the morale of the visually challenged players and spreading awareness about them. Truly, a great young visionary.

You can see here India's top players battling side-by-side with their teammates against other contingencies from different parts of the country live in action in 38th National Team Chess Championship 2018 and 16th National Team Chess Championship 2018 for Women. The tournament will go on from 8th to 14th February 2018 in KIIT University, Bhubnaneswar, Odisha. Team PSPB who has dominated for five consecutive years from 2011 to 2015, made its return after skipping the event last year, will look to claim the championship and add one more title to their name.
