Raahul V S triumphs at Talent Chess Academy 1st Open Rating

Raahul V S of Tamil Nadu edged ahead of IM Sayantan Das and CM Rajarishi Karthi, all three of them scored 8.0/9 each, due to a better tie-break score, Raahul clinched the championship. Sayantan and Rajarishi had to settle for second and third position respectively. Total 361 players including 4 IMs, 2 FMs, a WFM and CM each from 12 different states, 2 union territories, a player from USA participated in this event. Kartavya Anadkat and Fathima Abdeen win National Amateur 2019

Kartavya Anadkat of Gujarat and Fathima Abdeen of Kerala are the National Amateur champions in open and women section respectively. Five players scored 8.0/10, Kartavya came out at the top due to a better tie-break score, suffering only one loss in the penultimate round against the eventual runner-up Srikanth K of SSCB who also finished with the same score. Indrajeet Mahindrakar of Maharashtra was placed third. Among the women, Fathima Abdeen of Kerala scored 7.0/10 to win the first position in her category followed by Femil Chelladurai of Tamil Nadu and Dhanashree Rathi of Maharashtra finishing at 6.5/10 each to secure second and third place respectively. Breaking the Carlsen juggernaut

There are some opponents who are just very difficult to beat. For Ding Liren it has been Magnus Carlsen. While the World Champion has scored 19 wins over the Chinese GM (in different formats), Ding has only been able to inflict two defeats to Magnus Carlsen. Psychologically Carlsen has always had an upper hand over Ding Liren. Bengal Chess is witnessing a controversy where the state's first grandmaster Dibyendu Barua has levied some serious allegations against the Bengal Chess Secretary Atanu Lahiri. These allegations include not giving permission for the organization of chess events, banning players from participating in tournaments, banning top GMs of the state - Surya Ganguly and Deep Sengupta from attending ceremonies organized by Bengal Chess, no elections held, and misappropriation of funds. AICF has condemned the actions of Atanu Lahiri and has issued a press release. India's medal hopes in World Cadets 2019 rests on Vivaan

Vivaan Vijay Saraogi has emerged as one of the leaders of the under-8 open after the penultimate round at the ongoing FIDE World Cadet Chess Championships 2019. One of country's upcoming talents, Vivaan has scored an impressive 8.0/10 points so far in the event and shares the lead with Kazakhstan's Tulendinov Dinmukhammed and Russia's Lebedev Artem S. Among players of other categories, Yash Bharadia too is performing commendably and has registered four victories in a row from rounds seven to ten. But unfortunately in the final round of the tournament he has been paired up against compatriot Ilamparthi A R which dwindles the country's medal hopes in that category. 

Upcoming tournaments in September 2019

The month of September will witness the biggest official tournament of the year, FIDE World Cup. Total 10 Indians will take part in this 128-player knockout event. Thus FIDE Grand Prix and Grand Chess Tour will take a break in September. The total number of tournaments listed in September is only 84, for the above mentioned reason. However we have Western Asia taking place at New Delhi and World Youth Rapid and Blitz at Spain. Udaipur and Ahmedabad will host 1st Lakecity International GM Open and 2nd Gujarat International GM Open respectively, making September an action packed month for all Indian chess players.

Ding Liren wins Sinquefield Cup 2019

Ding Liren carried the day in Saint Louis, surprising spectators by winning a rapid and blitz tiebreak against World Champion Magnus Carlsen. Carlsen was consistently behind on the clock which proved a decisive factor, as a tentative move in the first blitz game actually resulted in his losing on time, despite the 3-second delay. After that Ding needed only a draw to secure his first Sinquefield Cup and a nearly certain ticket to the Grand Chess Tour final in London later this year. How do you know that India is becoming one of the strongest chess nations in the world today? Well, if you are a diligent follower of chess then you can't possibly miss how frequently Indians are excelling in international events of note on foreign soil. The level of participation these days is impressively high and the domination unmistakable. In this month itself we have had the Abu Dhabi Chess Festival and the Riga Technical University Open where some of largest representations and best performances came from the Indian contingents. During almost the same time, from 5th to 12th of August, seven more Indians were fighting it out in another very important tournament taking place about 6000 kilometers away from their homeland in the Polish city of Suwalki. It was the 3rd International Irena Warakomska Memorial, and guess what! of all the 97 participants in open A section, it was once again an Indian, Grandmaster Harsha Bharathakoti, who won the event.

Carlsen comeback leads to playoff

The tense last round of the Sinquefield Cup ended in a dramatic way, with emotions and competitive tension taking centre-stage rather than skills. Magnus Carlsen completed his comeback in the tournament with yet another victory - with black pieces too - to jump to the top at the last minute and tie for the first place with 6½ points and force playoffs against Ding Liren for Thursday. Ding held his nerve to hold Shakhriyar Mamedyarov to a draw, while Karjakin missed a chance to finish at the top by not converting an advantageous ending against Caruana. Dhruv and Dakshita win ARCA State under-19

Dhruv Dak and Dakshita Kumawat wins ARCA State under-19 FIDE Rated in boys and girls category respectively. Dhruv scored an unbeaten 7.5/8 and finished a full point ahead to win the tournament, while Dakshita scored 6.0/8 to win the girls section. Arun Kataria and Aditya Kumawat scored 6.5/8 and they were placed second and third according to their tie-break score. Akshita Jain also scored 6.0/8 but due to a lower tie-break score, she had to settle for second place among the girls while Anisha Jain secured third position with a score of 5.5/8. Another intense day of fighting chess and drama in the tenth round of the Sinquefield Cup. Ding Liren shot into sole lead with six points out of ten games. Boris Savchenko registers second consecutive tournament victory this month

Russian Grandmaster Boris Savchenko is the winner of Tetrasoft Hyderabad Marriott GM Tournament 2019 that came to conclusion yesterday on the 27th of August. This was his second tournament victory in a row this month after Athens of the East International Open which was held in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. The Hyderabad Tetrasoft GM was dominated by foreign players as the top places were all acquired by them, but as is customary these days several Indians stole the limelight from time to time by unexpectedly toppling their higher rated opponents. Particularly noteworthy were performances by Odisha's Utkal Ranjan Sahoo, Tamil Nadu's Hari Madhavan N B, and West Bengal's Kaustuv Kundu all of whom finished just half a point behind the leaders. IM Raja Rithvik R and thirteen-year-old Pranav V also managed to grab eyeballs by beating top seeded Savchenko and Pavel Smirnov in the fifth and fourth rounds of the event.
