Sandipan and Gukesh make a steady start at 23rd OIBM Tegernsee

Witnessing the participation of over 500 players in Indian tournaments is a common happening, however Offene Internationale Bayerische Meisterschaft also known as OIBM at Tegernsee in Germany is witnessing a mammoth 504 participants in the 23rd edition of the tournament. Sandipan Chanda and Gukesh D are just a half point behind the four leaders at 3.5/4 each. The highest rated Indian at the tournament Sethuraman suffered a defeat in round 4. 12-year-old CM Prraneeth Vuppala had a dream start by holding the former World Cup winner Gata Kamsky to a draw in the first round. Sandipan and Gukesh are close behind the leaders

23rd edition of Offene Internationale Bayerische Meisterschaft Tegernsee witnesses a record breaking 504 players from 26 different countries including 24 GMs. The Indian charge is currently led by GM Sandipan Chanda and GM Gukesh D.

In round 4, Sandipan made a short work of his opponent, FM Volker Seifert (GER, 2300) in just 27 moves employing his favorite Dutch Defence.

Gukesh scored a fine over FM Stephan Buchal (GER, 2274) in round 4.

The highest rated Indian in the fray, GM Sethuraman S P suffered a loss against GM Vugar Asadli (AZE, 2503) in round 4.

Here Sethuraman opted for 27...Qe6, after which White gained insurmountable advantage and eventually win the game after 52 moves in an opposite color bishop endgame.

Among the Indian women, Padmini made an undefeated start with 3.0/4. She defeated Dirk Viebahn (GER, 2137) in round 4.

The only other Indian woman participating in this event, IM Nisha Mohota has also made an undefeated start with 2.5/4. She drew with Polish GM Grzegorz Nasuta (2534) in round 4.

12-year-old Prraneeth Vuppala (2149) couldn't have asked for a better start as he drew with the legendary Gata Kamsky in round 1 of the tournament.

The tournament is played in 9 rounds Swiss System, however round 1-5 will have accelerated pairings in Baku method.
