Adam Tukhaev and Hesham Abdelrahman lead the IIFL WEALTH GM Open

The IIFL WEALTH International Chess Tournament is taking place from the 30th of December 2019 to 7th of January 2020 at the Cuffe Parade-colaba in Mumbai. The open event this year has attracted more than 150 players from as many as 23 different countries including 25 Grandmasters and 28 International Masters. Abhijeet Gupta, Vaibhav Suri, Abhimanyu Puranik, Sandipan Chanda are some of the big names competing from India; while Aleksej Aleksandrov, Yakubboev Nodirbek, Alexei Fedorov, and Adam Tukhaev are among the prominent foreigners vying for the championship title. Five rounds of the tournament are already over and in this pictorial article we bring you the highlights of the latest happenings.

Prantik Roy wins 21st MCA All Bengal Rapid Rating Open

Starting out as the top seed of the tournament, IM Prantik Roy scored 7.5/8, finished a half point ahead of the competition, remained undefeated to win 21st MCA All Bengal Rapid Rating Open 2019. He is also the reigning State Rapid champion and the runner-up at 1st SAARC Chess 2019. Five players finished at 7.0/8. IM Aronyak Ghosh and Arpan Das Jr. scored 7.0/8 each and they were placed second and third respectively. Total 294 players participated in this two-day All Bengal Open Rapid Rating event. Chess has been compared to mathematics time and time again, and figuratively it makes sense for the game no doubt embodies many elements which are distinctly mathematical in nature. Akshay Anand wins nurtr DCA Rapid Rating Open 2019

Akshay Anand scored 8.0/9, remained undefeated to win nurtr DCA Rapid Rating Open. He won ₹11000 cash and a beautiful trophy as a prize. Both Aradhya Garg and FM Aaryan Varshney also finished at 8.0/9, however they were placed second and third respectively according to their tie-break score. Total ₹101000 prize fund was distributed among the prize winners. Total 292 players participated in this two-day open Rapid rating event, organized by Delhi Chess Association at Arya Samaj Bhawan, New Delhi on 21st and 22nd December 2019. Harsha, Vidit, Nihal impressive at World Blitz 2019

Harsha Bharathakoti surprised by defeating Nihal Sarin in the final round of World Blitz 2019 and finishing with 13.0/21. Thus becoming the best Indian performer at World Blitz 2019, ranked 28th.  Why is it a surprise? Because Harsha finished day 1 of Blitz with only 5.5/12. Vidit Gujrathi and Nihal Sarin both were impressive and they did not disappoint with their performance. They scored some fine victories over Dmitry Andreikin, Sergey Karjakin and Ian Nepomniachtchi. They held their own against some of the best of the world. Among the women, both Humpy and Harika made a solid start. Humpy was in the lead till round 13. Upcoming tournaments in January 2020

Since 2019 was a packed year full of tournaments, the new year of the decade 2020 is supposed to be a well balanced calendar for all players. Women's World Championship starts on 3rd January at Shanghai, China and it will conclude on 26th January at Vladivostok, Russia. The 82nd edition of Tata Steel Masters will witness the new World Triple Crown champion Magnus Carlsen along with Vishy Anand and other Elite players in action. In the challengers section, Surya Sekhar Ganguly and Nihal Sarin will duke it out with other players. One of the strongest Open tournaments, Gibraltar International Chess Festival will start on 20th January. Yakkuboev wins Bhopal International GM Open, Venkatesh finishes second

Central India's biggest tournament of 2019, Bhopal International GM Open came conclusion by crowning GM Nodirbek Yakubboev of Uzbekistan as the champion of the tournament. He remained undefeated in all ten games. This was the most exciting finish in Bhopal International tournament history as six players finished with a score of 8.0/10. Tie-break scores decided the final standings. India's highest rated player in the event, fifth seeded GM Venkatesh M R secured the runner-up position to make his country proud. An overview of Indian performances at the World Rapid 2019

The Indian contingent failed to win any medals in the open section of the World Rapid Championship but that said many of the performances did reflect the bright hopes that the country has in the game of chess. Even though the highest rated Indian Vidit Gujrathi failed to make an impression, many of the other players, including the three talented youngsters Gukesh D, Nihal Sarin, and Raunak Sadhwani, impressively pulled off 2600+ performances. And among the more experienced players Surya Sekhar Ganguly and Adhiban Baskaran too performed commendably well. In this article we bring you a brief overview.  

The inspiring return of Koneru Humpy

Koneru Humpy gifted the chess community of India a huge honour yesterday by becoming the Women World Rapid Champion. The 32-year-old played some phenomenal bit of chess to score 9.0/12 and was tied for the top place along with Lei Tingjie of China and Ekaterina Atalik of Turkey. However, based on the tiebreak Koneru and Lei advanced to a play-off for the first position. The Indian and Chinese both exchanged blows in what turned out to be quite a dramatic play-off but ultimately it was the ever hungry Humpy who came out on the top. Magnus Carlsen is the World Rapid Champion

Magnus Carlsen is now not just the Classical World Champion, but also the Rapid World Champion! He played sublime chess, gaining 14 Elo points, reaching 2900 on the Elo scale to win the title one point ahead of his nearest rivals. Silver medal was won unexpectedly by Alireza Firouzja who scored 4.5/5 on the last day and Nakamura settled for the bronze. World Rapid 2019 Day two: Harika and Humpy in with chance for a medal

After playing eight rounds in the women section of the ongoing World Rapid 2019 Koneru Humpy and Harika Dronavalli have still kept the country's medal hopes alive. Both of them have scored 6.5/8 points each so far and are just half a point behind the leaders Irina Bulmaga, Tan Zhongyi, Lei Tingjie, and Mariya Muzychuk. In the open group Adhiban Baskaran has the highest score among the Indians; while players like Aravindh Chithambaram, Nihal Sarin, Raunak Sadhwani are stealing the show by holding their own against experienced higher-rated opposition.
