Top seed Narayanan S L dominates IPS Academy 2nd Sultan Khan Cup

GM Narayanan S L won IPS Academy Online Blitz Open with an unbeaten score of 8.5/9. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. This was Narayanan's third Open Blitz event triumph, hosted by ChessBase India. IM Mitrabha Guha scored sole 8.0/9 and he was placed second. GM Diptayan Ghosh secured third position 7.0/9 as he had a better tie-break among the group of twelve players with the same score. A total of 170 players including 6 GMs, 12 IMs, a WGM and 4 WIMs participated in this event from five different countries across the world. For the first time, a ChessBase India event took place on Tornelo, and it was quite a successful one.

Aimchess US Rapid QF1: Carlsen and Firouzja blaze Duda and So

Leinier ended Artemiev's unbeaten streak at the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Aimchess US Rapid. The American beat the Russian in their second game, however Artemiev delivered the equalizer in the fourth game to tie the first set. So lost to Firouzja 0.5-2.5 which is the inverse of their score in the Carlsen invitational earlier this year. Firouzja has never played a Semifinal in this season, and he is in a good position to advance. Duda lost the first set against the world champion without scoring a single win. Aronian and Mamedyarov had four decisive games and the Armenian won the first set. Can Duda, So and Mamedyarov make a comeback? Second set of the Quarterfinals start today at 8:30 p.m. IST. Raunak Sadhwani clinches 5th Innsbruck Open and crosses 2600

GM Raunak Sadhwani won 5th Innsbruck International Open with an unbeaten 8.0/9. He performed at 2692, gained 10 Elo rating points, crossed 2600, taking his live rating to 2604.8. Raunak scored seven victories and two draws, including a draw against the Austria no.1 Markus Ragger. He finished a full point ahead of the competition. FM Fulvio Zamengo (ITA) 7.0/9 and FM Mike Ivanov (CAN) 6.5/9 were placed second and third. That's not all. He also finished second in the Blitz event scoring 7.0/9. GM Nikita Meshkovs won the Blitz 9.5/11, FM Magnus Arndt (GER) was placed third according to tie-breaks. Aimchess US Rapid Day 3: Duda-Carlsen rematch in the Quarterfinals

Vladislav Artemiev won the Prelims of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Aimchess US Rapid. He scored an unbeaten 10.5/15. Carlsen missed a win against Duda in the queen ending, which ended in a draw. It resulted in them facing each other once again in the Quarterfinals, where they will play plenty of games. Aronian, Firouzja, So, Mamedyarov and Leinier are the remaining players to advance to the knockout stage. Despite having his best day of the event, Vidit was unable to advance. Iniyan clinches double at 6th Noisiel International Open

Iniyan scored a double triumph at 6th Noisiel International Open as he won both Classical and Blitz event. This tournament is special to Iniyan, because this is where he became India's 61st GM almost 2.5 years ago. He finished at second place then. This time, Iniyan improved his statistics at Noisiel by winning both events. He won two trophies and €1450 cash prize in total. Last month, Iniyan made his fantastic debut at the biggest FIDE World Cup by eliminating Sebastian Bogner in the very first round. Iniyan has annotated three games of his from the tournament where he showcases his skill in strategy, endgame knowledge as well as tactical alertness.

Aimchess US Rapid Day 2: Artemiev's hat-trick springs him to the top

Vladislav Artemiev scored three consecutive wins to sprint to the top of table 7.5/10 at the conclusion of the tenth round at Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Aimchess US Rapid. Artemiev finished the day with a solid draw against the world champion Carlsen, who appreciated the Russian's play. Carlsen and previous day leader Aronian share the second place 7.0/10 each. Vidit started the day with a win, then he made three draws before losing the final game of the day against Leinier. He is now at 4.5/10. To qualify to the Knockout stage, he needs to have his best day of the event, today. Giri finished the day with a win after making seven draws. Round 11 starts today at 8:30 p.m. IST. The first day of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Aimchess US Rapid witnessed plenty of exciting games. Thankfully, there were no theoretical short draws. Carlsen was involved in two checkmate finishes. Once again he managed to escape from the jaws of defeat against Vidit. The world champion is definitely going to push his limits since his world title defense is less than 90 days away. It was evident from the very first game of the day against So. Carlsen and Artemiev are at a half point behind the sole leader Aronian at 3.5/5 followed by Leinier, So, Firouzja and Mamedyarov at 3.0/5 each respectively. Giri started with five draws 2.5/5. Help 10-year-old chess player Sanjay fight Osteogenesis Imperfecta

10-year-old Sanjay Sivakumar suffers from Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI). It's a disorder that is quite rare and affects one in 10,000 to 20,000 people across the world. Sanjay has bones that are brittle and break very easily. He has till date suffered 57 fractures. While growing up Sanjay became the under-7 Karur district champion in Tamil Nadu. However, due to his health condition, he has had to give up playing over the board chess. His father Sivakumar is a chess coach, arbiter and an organizer. For Sivakumar, the Covid-19 pandemic has been rough and he is finding it tough financially to continue Sanjay's treatment. Here's a humble appeal to all our readers to help the youngster fight this deadly condition.

Magnus Carlsen, Anish Giri, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, the newly crowned FIDE World Cup 2021 winner Jan-Krzysztof Duda and Vidit return to the tour after missing the previous event Chessable Masters due to the biggest World Cup in history clashing with the schedule. The last Regular event of the season will feature the debuts of Chessbrah CEO Eric Hansen, Daniel Naroditsky and one of the top junior of the USA, Awonder Liang. He was the runner-up of the recently concluded Kramnik Challenge. Superb Sethuraman clinches Barcelona Open 2021

Top seed Sethuraman made three consecutive draws between round four and six, which put him 1.5 points behind the sole leader Aram Hakobyan 6.0/6. However, Sethuraman showed his strength and won the last three rounds including a win on-demand in the final round to beat Hakobyan and win Ciutat de Barcelona 2021 Open. Things would have been different if Aravindh lost his final game against Yuffa in the last round. Aravindh showed his tenacity to salvage a draw ensuring Sethuraman wins the tournament on tie-breaks as both him and Yuffa finished at 7.5/9. Five players finished at 7.0/9. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave wins Sinquefield Cup 2021

Maxime Vachier-Lagrave has won the Sinquefield Cup 2021 by making a draw in the final round against Mamedyarov. He became the first beaten champion since the tournament became a part of Grand Chess Tour in 2015. Starting out the season at a tied last place finish in Bucharest, Romania due to health reasons, the Frenchman made quite a comeback by winning the last two events and finishing overall second in the entire season with 35 points. As mentioned yesterday, Wesley So won the Grand Chess Tour 2021 scoring 36.6 points, Mamedyarov was placed third 26.5 points. Gukesh crosses 2600 at the age of 15 years 2 months and 27 days

He narrowly missed the mark of becoming the youngest GM in the world when he achieved the title at the age of 12 years, 7 months and 17 days. Gukesh's chess career was on the rise and he was gaining rating points quickly inching towards the 2600 mark. That's when the Covid-19 pandemic struck and the young boy was prevented from playing in tournaments for the next year and a half. However, the moment things opened up, Gukesh participated in a series of events, gaining 25 Elo points and pumping his Elo from 2578 to 2603! The Chennai lad has managed to cross 2600 at the tender age of 15 years, 2 months and 27 days - third youngest in India after Pragg and Nihal. 

Wesley So wins Grand Chess Tour 2021

Wesley So has won the Grand Chess Tour 2021 with final round to spare in the Sinquefield Cup 2021. Since he is guaranteed to get a minimum of seven GCT points irrespective of final round result, he cannot be overtaken mathematically by the nearest rivals Mamedyarov or Vachier-Lagrave in the GCT points table. The Frenchman maintained his half point lead as all games ended in draws. A win over Superbet Chess Classic winner Mamedyarov in the final round, could still mean Vachier-Lagrave winning two GCT events consecutively of this season, which would be a really great finish. Arjun Erigaisi and Gukesh dominate 2nd Terras de Trás-os-Montes Open

Arjun Erigaisi scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 2nd Terras de Trás-os-Montes and finish a half point ahead of the competition. He performed at 2822, gained 18.7 Elo rating points, taking his live rating to 2626.6 which makes him the current India no.9. Gukesh's no-draw approach paid off as he scored eight wins and suffered only one loss against the eventual champion. He scored 8.0/9, performing at 2747, he gained 17.7 which takes his live rating to 2592.9. Gukesh finished a full point ahead of the field. They both have reached their career high ratings, and they have no plans of slowing down as they started playing their next event Guimarães Open in Guimarães, Portugal. Sinquefield Cup R7: Vachier-Lagrave emerges sole leader

Maxime Vachier-Lagrave gained the sole lead 5.0/7 as he beat Xiong convincingly in the seventh round of Sinquefield Cup 2021. He will be aiming to win his second consecutive Grand Chess Tour 2021 after his triumph at Croatia Rapid and Blitz last month. Caruana and Svidler also scored victories over Mamedyarov and Swiercz respectively. Caruana, So and Leinier are now a half point behind the leader at 4.5/7 each respectively.
