Group e4 - Vishy Anand's initiative to support young talents financially

Becoming a grandmaster at chess is not an easy journey. It requires a lot of funds and resources. Parents often pour in all their finances to ensure that their children are able to get the right training and play in the appropriate events. However, sometimes practical difficulties just make it impossible to pursue the sport. In such cases it would be highly beneficial if someone would be able to support you on the journey. This is exactly what Vishy Anand has managed to do with Satya Prabhakar as they launched Group e4. The Group has a very interesting model as more than 135 families have come together and a whatsapp group has resulted in raising over Rs.38 lakh and financial support for over a dozen Indian chess players! Sumer Arsh wins the Arjun Erigaisi Death Match 2.0 scholarship of Rs.3,25,000

When the ChessBase India Originals Death Match 1.0 ended GM Anish Giri donated Rs.2,00,000 (a part of his prize money) as a scholarship for a talented and upcoming player. This was won by Ilamparthi AR. Keeping up with the tradition, the winner of Death Match 2.0 Arjun Erigaisi also donated his prize money. Arjun went a step ahead and donated his entire prize money of Rs.3,25,000. The Arjun Erigaisi Death Match 2.0 scholarship was won by Sumer Arsh Shaikh, a talented 14-year-old boy from Telangana. Sumer is the one who defeated Arjun and Gukesh in their tandem simul exhibition at the DreamHack 2022. Vignesh N R dominates 24th NordWest Cup 2023

IM Vignesh N R scored an unbeaten 6/7 to win 24th NordWest Cup in Bad Zwischenahn, Germany. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Nine players finished 5.5/7. His brother, GM Visakh N R was among them and he was placed fifth according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund combining three groups was €5000. The top three prizes in Group A (>1850) were €1200, 800 and 600 along with a trophy each respectively. Vignesh won ₹106208 approximately. Airthings Masters 2023: Nakamura takes the alternate route to the Grand Final

Arjun Erigaisi missed a draw against Wesley So in the first game of the Losers Semifinal. The teenager was lost in the second game too. However, So decided to draw the game as it was enough for him to advance to the Losers Final where Hikaru Nakamura was waiting for him. The reigning World Fischer Random champion missed a win in the first game. After a quick theoretical draw in the second, the match went into Armageddon which was won by Nakamura. Munich GP Round 7: Nana Dzagnidze reduces the gap

GM Nana Dzagnidze scored the sole win of Round 7 against IM Alina Kashlinskaya. The Georgian scored a fine victory in the King's Indian Defence where she outplayed her opponent. The remaining five games ended in draws. Thus, Dzagnidze moved to sole second position 4.5/7, one full point behind the tournament leader, GM Alexandra Kosteniuk 5.5/7. GM Koneru Humpy is in sole third position 4/7 after her draw with WGM Zhu Jiner. Five players including GM Harika Dronavalli are at shared fourth place with a 50% score 3.5/7. MPL 42nd National Team Open and 20th National Team Women Chess Championship 2023 preview

The strongest nationals after the National Premier championship – the national team championship boast the participation of several grandmasters, IMs, WGMs and WIMs. The venue is Dr. Mahalingam College of Engineering & Technology, Pollachi whose founder Dr.N. Mahalingam was a former president of All India Chess Federation and Tamil Nadu State Chess Association for many years. The dates are from 10th to 16th February 2023. In the absence of the strong PSPB team in 2022, the Airports Authority of India won the title and the Railway Sports Promotion Board clinched the second and third places. 10-year-old Niladri Banerjee becomes the youngest ever West Bengal State Rapid Rating 2023 champion

The reigning West Bengal State Under-11 Open champion, Niladri Banerjee created a record on 29th January 2023. At the age of 10 years 5 months and 4 days, the little kid from Howrah District became the youngest West Bengal State Rapid Rating 2023 champion. He won the tournament with a perfect score 8/8 and finished a full point ahead of the competition. Defending champion Subhayan Kundu and Bishal Basak scored 7/8 each. They were placed second and third according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹58400 + trophies. Airthings Masters 2023 LQF: Arjun Erigaisi eliminates Gukesh

Arjun Erigaisi defeated D Gukesh 1.5-0.5 in the Losers Quarterfinals. He will face Wesley So in the Losers Semifinals and the winner of that match will face Hikaru Nakamura. The reigning World Fischer Random champion, drew all four Rapid games against Magnus Carlsen. The Norwegian won the bid for Armageddon by 1 second and opted for Black. Carlsen missed several winning chances throughout the day, it was no different in Armageddon either. It ended in a draw and the World no.1 advanced to the Grand Final which will take place on Friday. Praggnanandhaa lost the Winners Final against Sam Sevian in Division 3. However, he Oleksandr Bortnyk and bounced back to the Grand Final to face Sevian again. Munich GP Round 6: Six draws

All six games of Round 6 ended in draws at Munich GP 2023. No one made any big mistake in all the games. Only GM Zhansaya Abdumalik and GM Harika Dronavalli had some upper hand against GM Alexandra Kosteniuk and GM Tan Zhongyi respectively. However, neither of them translated to anything substantial. Kosteniuk maintains her sole lead 5/6, followed by GM Nana Dzagnidze and GM Koneru Humpy at 3.5/6 each. Then six players are at 3/6 each. Arjun Erigaisi started the Airthings Masters 2023 Semifinal with a loss. He drew the second game against Magnus Carlsen and then beat him in the third. The fourth game ended in a draw which forced Armageddon. Arjun could only manage a draw in a must-win situation, although he was lost at one point. Thus, Arjun will now have to take the alternate path towards the Grand Final. He will face Alexey Sarana in the Losers Quarterfinal. Rauf Mamedov lost to D Gukesh 1-2. Thus, Gukesh will face Wesley So in the LQF, as he continues towards the Grand Final. Carlsen vs Nakamura in the Winners Final starts tonight from 9:30 p.m. IST. Stany G A wins Republic Day Cup Rapid Rating Open 2023

GM Stany G A and IM FT Harikrishnan A Ra scored an unbeaten 8/9 each. Due to better tie-breaks, Stany became champion at Republic Day Cup Rapid Rating Open 2023. FM Ritviz Parab and FM Sharan Rao scored 8/9 in the Blitz Open. They secured first and second place respectively. GM Stany G A scored sole 7.5/9 to finish third. The combined total prize fund of the Rapid Rating and Blitz Open was ₹230000. Airthings Masters 2023 QF: Arjun Erigaisi squashes Firouzja, sets up a clash with Carlsen

The world no.4 Alireza Firouzja lost to Arjun Erigaisi in three consecutive games at Airthings Masters 2023 Quarterfinals. Arjun played outstanding chess in all three games, seized his opportunities to a score a 0-3 whitewash. He will face the world no.1 Magnus Carlsen in the Semifinals. Carlsen defeated Alexey Sarana 2.5-0.5, although he was winning the third game too. D Gukesh lost to Hikaru Nakamura 0.5-2.5. He won the Swiss stage Play-in scoring an unbeaten 7.5/9 and finished a full point on 3rd February. On the very same day he defeated the 14th world champion, Vladimir Kramnik thrice. Harika Dronavalli got herself very close to ending Alexandra Kosteniuk's unbeaten streak. However, the former could not capitalize on her advantage and Kosteniuk escaped with a draw. She is still in the sole lead 4.5/5 and 1.5 points ahead of the field. GM Mariya Muzychuk could not spot her opponent IM Alina Kashlinskaya's blunder and eventually she went on the to win the game. Fourth seeded IM FT Harikrishnan A Ra scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win Velammal Republic Day Celebration Rapid Rating Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field. IM Ajay Karthikeyan scored sole 8/9 to finish second. Three players - Ilamparthi A R, GM Laxman R R and GM Vishnu Prasanna scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed third, fourth and fifth respectively. The total prize fund of the Rapid event was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹30000, ₹20000 and ₹15000 each respectively. The one-day Rapid Rating tournament witnessed the participation of 267 players including 3 GMs and 5 IMs. It was organized by Rooks and Knights Academy of Chess.
