Vedant Panesar becomes the latest International Master from Mumbai

20-year-old Vedant Panesar became India's latest International Master in December 2023. The Mumbai lad earned his maiden IM-norm at Maia Open 2022 in Maia, Portugal. A year, a month and half later, he earned his second IM-norm at Qatar Masters 2023. Ten days later, he started playing at Vezerkepzo Fall GM 2023, where he scored his final IM-norm. Vedant crossed 2400 rating barrier in December 2023 FIDE Rating list as his Elo rating showed 2445. He also scored his fourth and fifth IM-norms consecutively after earning his final IM-norm. Vidit Gujrathi to face Ding Liren in the first round of 86th Tata Steel Masters 2024

The first major chess event of the year 2024 is 86th Tata Steel Chess. Six Indians - three in Masters and three in Challengers will be seen in action. It is the highest ever, one more from last year. In Round 1 Masters it will be, Vidit Gujrathi vs Ding Liren (CHN), D Gukesh vs Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) and R Praggnanandhaa vs Parham Maghsoodloo (IRI). The Challengers section will have: IM Divya Deshmukh vs IM FT Stefan Beukema (BEL), IM Eline Roebers (NED) vs GM Leon Luke Mendonca and GM Marc Andria Maurizzi (FRA) vs GM Harika Dronavalli. 2nd Indore GM Open 2024 R5-6: Fedorov emerges sole leader, Deepan in pursuit

GM Alexei Fedorov is the new sole leader 5.5/6 at 2nd Indore GM Open 2024. He defeated IM Ratnakaran K and GM Hesham Abdelrahman (EGY) in Round 5 and 6 respectively. The veteran GM is followed by GM Deepan Chakkravarthy, IM Arash Tahbaz (IRI) and GM Boris Savchenko at 5/6 each. There are 16 players including 13 Indians at 4.5/6 each. FM Goutham Krishna H and FM Kashish Manoj Jain are the only non-GM/IM among them. Deepan will face Fedorov inevitably in the seventh round. Kartavya Anadkat scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win Mark Dvoretsky Memorial Rapid Rating Open 2023. He finished a full point ahead of the competition. Six players - Hrithickkesh Pr, GM Laxman R R, FM K Senthil Maran, Dhanush Ragav N S, FM Syed Anwar Shazuli and Karthik E scored 6.5/9 each. They were placed second to seventh respectively according to tie-breaks. Kartavya defeated Hrithickkesh in the penultimate round and drew against Laxman in the last round. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹16000 + trophy, ₹15000 and ₹14000 each respectively. Kartavya and Laxman remained undefeated among top three. 2nd Indore GM Open 2024 R4: Deepan subdues Savchenko, gains early sole lead

GM Deepan Chakkravarthy defeated GM Boris Savchenko to emerge sole leader 4/4 at 2nd Indore GM Open 2024. Deepan made a sound exchange sacrifice to gain two pawns and open his light square bishop's path. He converted his advantage into a win comfortably. Both GM Alexei Fedorov and IM Ameya Audi had a solitary chance each, to gain decisive advantage against their counterpart. WGM Nandhidhaa P V had a grueling battle against GM Hesham Abdelrahman (EGY). IM P Shyam Nikhil showed fine technique in the opposite color bishop endgame against GM Igor Glek (BEL). Local player, Prakhar Bajaj made the most out of his opportunity against IM Kushagra Mohan. Deepan will face the top seed Iniyan in the fifth round. Today will be the last double round of the event. Breakfast at Anands! - The start of a new tradition?

How difficult is it to get together 15 GMs and 21 titled players in one house on a Sunday morning for breakfast? Sounds impossible, doesn't it? What if we said it was not only possible, but 3 out of these players are top 25 in the world! This can happen only in one city in the world and that place in Chennai. The wonderful breakfast was hosted by Vishy and Aruna Anand and we bring you all the pictures from the this beautiful gathering. It not only had strong players, but also their family members who joined in. IM Sagar Shah shares the pictures from the day and also writes about his experience of visiting Gukesh's home later in the evening.

Vignesh N R victorious at Basel Christmas Festival 2023

GM Vignesh N R scored an unbeaten 7/9 to win Basel Christmas Festival 2023 Master (Above 2050). He finished a half point ahead of the rest. FM Gabriele Lumachi (ITA), GM Boris Chatalbashev (DEN) and FM Enis Zuferi (GER) scored 6.5/9 each. They were placed second to fourth respectively according to tie-breaks. Vignesh drew against both eventual runners-up, Lumachi and Chatalbashev. The total prize fund of the tournament was CHF 8000. The top three prizes were CHF 2000 + trophy, 1500 and 1200 each. Apart from Vignesh, GM Venkatesh M R and Vignesh's younger brother, GM Visakh N R made a top ten finish. 2nd Indore GM Open 2024 R2-3: Nandhidhaa makes a perfect start

IM Ratnakaran K, GM Deepan Chakkravarthy, IM Ameya Audi and WGM Nandhidhaa P V are the four Indians to make a perfect start at 2nd Indore GM Open 2024. Total eight players are at 3/3, four of them are Indians. Nandhidhaa won a long battle against IM Neelash Saha. Kartavya Anadkat missed a win against IM Ilamparthi A R. Daaevik Wadhawan continued his momentum by winning against IM Ayush Sharma. However, the 13-year-old lost his third round battle against Ameya. However, just before he took his flight to Amsterdam, Vidit decided to spend a day at Ambit House in Mumbai. Along with meeting the top management team of Ambit, Vidit played a simultaneous exhibition with 17 opponents. Daksh Goyal and Mrittika Mallick are National Sub-Junior Open and Girls 2023 Champions

Daksh Goyal (DEL), Jihan Tejas Shah (GUJ) and Samyak Dharewa (WB) scored 8.5/11 each at 48th National Sub-Junior Under-15 Open 2023. Daksh won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Jihan and Samyak were placed second and third respectively. Only Daksh remained undefeated among them. Mrittika Mallick (WB) scored 9/11 to become champion in 39th National Sub-Junior Under-15 Girls 2023. Despite losing the fourth round and scoring a half point in the next round, she won the next five games and finished a half point ahead of the rest. Her statemate Sneha Halder (WB) secured second place 8.5/11. Sannidhi Ramakrishna Bhat (MAH), the only girl to beat the eventual champion, Mrittika, finished third 8/11. Bharat Kumar Reddy Poluri scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win 1st Marvel Rating Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Six players - GM Saptarshi RoyChowdhury, Kartavya Anadkat, Naitik R Mehta, Suresh Duvvala, Badrinath S and Vigneshwaran S scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed second to seventh respectively according to tie-breaks. Bharat drew against the eventual second runner-up, Kartavya. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹600000. 2nd Indore GM Open 2024 R1: Daaevik, Saurabh and Vivaan score upsets

Daaevik Wadhawan, Saurabh Choubey and CM Vivaan Vijay Saraogi scored upset victories in the first round of 2nd Indore GM Open 2024. They defeated IM Ritviz Parab, Sri Lanka no.2 - IM Thilakarathne G M H and IM Shahil Dey respectively. The top seed of the tournament, GM Iniyan Pa started his campaign with a smooth victory. A total of 131 players including 10 GMs, 23 IMs, 2 WGMs and 6 WIMs are taking part from 13 countries across the world. The total prize fund is ₹3500000, ₹2100000 in GM Open. Vaishali is the Arjuna Award 2023 recipient, Dronacharya Award for R B Ramesh in Chess

R Vaishali became the third Indian woman to achieve the Grandmaster title. She ended the 12-year-long wait for an Indian female to earn the highest title one can achieve in chess. Before fulfilling the GM title requirements, she won the FIDE Women's Grand Swiss 2023 and earned herself a spot in the FIDE Women's Candidates 2024. That's not all, she won Silver medal at 19th Asian Games 2022 before that and also won a team and individual Bronze medal at 44th Chess Olympiad 2022. GM FST R B Ramesh has a long list of accolades. At FIDE World Cup 2023, his student R Praggnanandhaa won Silver medal and also secured a spot at the FIDE Candidates 2024.
