Magnus Carlsen conquers Casablanca Chess 2024

Fischer Random/Freestyle Chess - Won. Casablanca Chess - Conquered. Magnus Carlsen is synonymous with winning chess tournaments. Be it in any format - Classical, Rapid or Blitz, or the ultimate chess tournament - FIDE World Cup, as it has all three formats. Now, Carlsen is winning variants too. "Anything that has to do with chess, I usually want to be reckoned with", said the World no.1. It is clear that the world's best played player only distanced himself from the Classical format but certainly not from chess. He scored an unbeaten 4.5/6 to win Casablanca Chess 2024. 7th Sharjah Masters R6: Aravindh Chithambaram maintains his sole lead

GM Aravindh Chithambaram drew with GM Samuel Shankland (USA) to maintain his sole lead 5/6 at 7th Sharjah Masters 2024. The top seed of the tournament, GM Arjun Erigaisi got back to his winning ways. He defeated GM Daniil Yuffa (ESP) to register his fourth win of the event. GM Pranav V won against his second consecutive 2664+ opponent, GM Samuel Sevian (USA). GM Pa Iniyan made a nice tactical save in the endgame against the Czech Republic no.2 - GM Thai Dai Van Nguyen. In the Challengers, IM Divya Deshmukh shared the point against GM Neuris Delgado Ramirez (PAR) in a position where she could have continued. IM Nitish Belurkar defeated GM Hesham Abdelrahman (EGY) and IM Viani Antonio Dcunha scored a victory over IM Mukhammadzokhid Suyarov (UZB) to join the five-way lead 5/6. Sham R dominates 2nd Dr. KCG Verghese Memorial Rating Open 2024

Sham R scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 2nd Dr. KCG Verghese Memorial Rating Open 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Teenager Saravanan scored sole 8/9 to secure second place. Vijay Shreeram P and Dinesh Rajan M scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed third and fourth respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹300000. The top three prizes were ₹40000 + trophy, ₹30000 and ₹20000 each. The five-day rating tournament was organized by and at KCG College of Technology, Chennai from 1st to 5th May 2024. Casablanca Chess R1-3: Carlsen makes a great start

Magnus Carlsen (NOR) made a great start at Casablanca Chess 2024. He scored 2.5/3 in the first three rounds. The world no.1 defeated Vishy Anand, drew with Bassem Amin (EGY) and then won against Hikaru Nakamura (USA). The positions were from Chigorin - Steinitiz, World Championship 1889 in Round 1, Xie Jun - Alisa Galliamova, Women's World Championship 1999 and Karpov - Kasparov, World Championship 1985. Nakamura is at 1.5/3, followed by Bassem and Anand at 1/3 each. Will Carlsen dominate the second half of the tournament too or someone will fight back? GM Aravindh Chithambaram continues his great form at 7th Sharjah Masters 2024. He defeated the UAE no.1 - GM Salem Saleh to emerge sole leader 4.5/5. Salem loves to attack, Aravindh took the game to him. He struck when the opportunity arose and did not allow his opponent to play his natural style. GM M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI), GM Hans Niemann (USA), GM Bardiya Daneshvar (IRI) and GM Sam Shankland (USA) are in pursuit at 4/5 each. GM Arjun Erigaisi and GM Sankalp Gupta drew with GM Volodar Murzin and GM Samuel Sevian (USA) respectively. They both are at 3.5/5 each. IM Divya Deshmukh defeated IM Aradhya Garg in the Challengers. Nikhil M clinches 2nd Queenstar Rating Open 2024, Indrajeet Mahindrakar second and Swapnil Dhopade third

Nikhil M scored 9/10 to win 2nd Queenstar Rating Open 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. Five players - Indrajeet Mahindrakar, GM Swapnil S Dhopade, Dandeniya D D L N (SRI), Sivathanujan S (SRI) and Rajawasal R U D Janith Dulmina (SRI) scored 8.5/10 each. They secured second to sixth place according to tie-breaks. WIM Chandreyee Hajra is the only other Indian to make a top ten finish. She scored 8/10 to finish seventh. The total prize fund of the tournament was LKR 2.3 Million. The top three prizes were LKR 200000, 150000 and 100000 along with a trophy and medal each. The five-day ten round rating tournament was organized by Queenstar International Chess Coaching Academy from 27th April to 1st May 2024 at Laknara Grand Hotel in Kadawatha, Sri Lanka. Casablanca Chess introduced by Casablanca Stock Exchange starts today in Casablanca, Morocco. The starting positions of each game will be equal positions inspired by historical gems - some renowned and others less so. Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, Vishy Anand and Amin Bassem will play three games on Saturday 18th May and Sunday 19th May. In the first round, it will be Carlsen vs Anand and Nakamura vs Bassem. 7th Sharjah Masters R4: Aravindh survives a big scare against Tabatabaei

The top board clash between GM Salem Saleh (UAE) and GM Hans Niemann (USA) witnessed a quick 13-move draw in Round 4 of 7th Sharjah Masters 2024. GM M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI) missed a win against GM Aravindh Chithambaram. Thus, Aravindh continues to lead with Salem and Hans with a score 3.5/4 each. GM Abhimanyu Puranik and GM Sankalp Gupta held GM Sam Shankland (USA) and GM Volodar Murzin respectively. The top seed, GM Arjun Erigaisi scored his second consecutive win of the event. He defeated GM Manuel Petrosyan (ARM) on his way back to the top. In the Challengers section, IM Viani Antonio Dcunha won the All-Indian clash against IM Sammed Shete to emerge sole leader 4/4. A celebration of Chess - The Big Chess Summer Camp 2024

It has been 4 days since the Big Chess Summer Camp kicked off in the Phoenix Marketcity Mall, Kurla, Mumbai. The Camp started off on 13th May, and will come to an end on 19th May 2024. This space has been dedicated to the ChessBase India Chess Club sessions since early 2022, A deathmatch, numerous simuls! But the big chess camps held here (3 so far) have always been very close to our heart and the chess community. Close to 350 people have already joined us to learn chess at their own pace with several other like-minded people - completly free of cost! In this article, we try to cover what has happened in these four days - starting from the guests who came in, the amazing people who are a part of it, and some very cool stories. If you are in Mumbai/nearby the city, hopefully this write-up will persuade you to join the camp and discover the fun for yourself!

Abdulla Gadimbayli wins Ljubljana Chess Festival 2024, Harikrishnan A Ra second

GM Abdulla Gadimbayli (AZE) and IM Harikrishnan A Ra scored 7.5/9 each at Ljubljana Chess Festival 2024. Abdualla won the tournament as he won against Harikrishnan in the seventh round. Direct encounter was the first tie-break. Thus, Harikrishnan had to settle for second place. GM Jan Šubelj (SLO), IM Domen Tisaj (SLO) and GM Imre Hera Jr. (HUN) scored 7/9 each. They secured third to fifth place respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the festival was €13000. The top three prizes were €3000, €2200 and €1500 each. The eight-day nine-round tournament was organized by Tajfun - ŠK Ljubljana, Šahovska Šola Zmajcek and Goldenchess at Hotel Lev in Ljubljana, Slovenia from 27th April to 4th May 2024.

7th Sharjah Masters R3: Sensational Salem flattens Fedoseev

UAE no.1 GM Salem Saleh scored sensational win over GM Vladimir Fedoseev (SLO) in 7th Sharjah Masters 2024 Round 3. Salem played in his usual sharp style and scored a beautiful victory. This game should definitely make into the books. Computer may not understand what Salem and can refute it but only a human mind will appreciate his artistry. GM Hans Niemann (USA) defeated GM Nikolas Theodorou (GRE) to score his third win in-a-row. GM Aravindh Chithambaram almost had the opposite of what Salem did. As his opponent, GM Marcin Krzyzanowski's (POL) attack backfired. Salem and Hans will face each other in Round 4, while Aravindh will be up against GM M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI). Md. Imran dominates 1st Spark Chess Academy Rating Open 2024

15-year-old Md. Imran scored an unbeaten 9.5/10 to win 1st Spark Chess Academy Rating Open 2024. He finished a full point ahead of the rest. 12-year-old Sree Shaunak Chanda scored sole 8.5/10 to secure second place. He also remained undefeated. Six players scored 8/10. Out of them, another 15-year-old Sri Charan Sandipagu claimed third place according to tie-breaks. He is the only person to snatch a half point from the eventual champion, Imran. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹500222. The top three prizes were ₹70000, ₹40000 and ₹25000 along with a trophy each. The six-day rating tournament was organized by Spark Chess Academy from 25th to 30th April 2024 at Shamrock International School in Kanuru, Vijayawada. Srinath Narayanan triumphs at MLA Chashak Rapid Rating Open 2024

Six players - GM FST Srinath Narayanan, IM Arghyadip Das, GM Sankalp Gupta, Siddhant Gawai, GM Laxman R R and FM Gaurang Bagwe scored 8/9 each at MLA Chashak Rapid Rating Open 2024. Srinath won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. The remaining five were placed second to sixth respectively. His sole loss occurred against the eventual runner-up, Arghyadip. All six of them suffered a defeat each. The only untitled among top six, Siddhant managed to beat two podium finishers - Arghyadip and Sankalp. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹401000. The top three prizes were ₹51000, ₹35000 and ₹21000 along with a trophy each. The two-day rapid rating tournament was organized by Jai Sai Welfare Foundation Nagpur on 27th and 28th April 2024 at St. Vincent Palloti School in Nagpur, Maharashtra. GM Nikolas Theodorou scored the biggest upset of the second round of 7th Sharjah Masters 2024. The Greece no.2 defeated the top seed GM Arjun Erigaisi with ease after the latter misjudged the intensity of his opponent's attack. Neglecting the proper defense of a key pawn led to his king's demise in the next four moves. GM Aravindh Chithambaram is the sole Indian to have won both of his games. He disposed GM Mahammad Muradli (AZE) without much difficulty. GM Sankalp Gupta seized his opportunity when his opponent, GM Shant Sargsyan (ARM) blundered in the endgame. GM Abhimanyu Puranik, GM Aditya Mittal and Sankalp are at 1.5/2 each. In the Challengers, Kush Devnani won a back and forth battle when GM Hesham Abdelrahman (EGY) blundered a mate in two.
