World Championship 2024 diaries Game 13

The FIDE World Championship Match 2024 presented by Google, has concluded. It crowned the 18th and youngest undisputed World Champion in the form of D Gukesh. Game 13 could have gone Gukesh's way. GM Sundararajan Kidambi analyzes Game 13 in detail along with few inputs of Magnus Carlsen. He also takes a look at the interesting moments of the game. Chandar Raju wins 1st SPIT Rapid Rating Open 2024

Chandar Raju and FM Aakash Sharadchandra Dalvi scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 each at 1st SPIT Rapid Rating Open 2024. Chandar became champion due to better tie-breaks, Aakash secured second place. The penultimate round battle between them ended in a draw. Arvind Iyer scored sole 8/9 to finish third. He also remained undefeated. The total prize fund was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹20000, ₹10000 and ₹8000 each. The one-day nine-round Swiss league rating tournament was organized by SPIT Sports Committee at Sardar Patel Institute of Technology in Mumbai, Maharashtra on 17th November. This is Chandar's first tournament triumph of the year.

The Hanoi GM/IM/FM Tournaments are back in 2025

From 2022, GM Bui Vinh (VIE) and his team from the Future Grandmasters Club has worked closely with Vietnam Chess Federation and the various national and regional government sports and tourism authorities to organise no less than ten GM/IM/FM tournaments, nine in Hanoi, and one in Quang Ninh. Now, at the start of 2025, there will be two GM, two IM, and two FM tournaments, the first series from 3rd to 9th January 2025 and the second series from 10th to 15th January 2025. The Coronation of the 18th World Chess Champion - D Gukesh

D Gukesh etched his name in history a little less than 24 hours ago. He is the youngest undisputed World Chess Champion in history. He started the year as a 17-year-old teenager. First he won the Candidates, then he won double Gold and finally he defeated the 17th World Champion - Ding Liren (CHN) by 7.5-6.5, winning three games and losing only two. The World no.5 assembled a star-studded team for his second. A decade long sacrifice of his parents, father - Dr. Rajini Kanth and mother - Padma Kumari's tireless efforts have finally attained the alluring summit. Gukesh dreamt, worked towards it and realized it. Almost 24 years, Vishy Anand became the World Champion for the very first time. It inspired the nation and beyond. It has been a little over 18 hours since D Gukesh etched his name in the history. He is the second Indian after Vishy Anand to win the World Championship. Abhirup Saikia dominates 15th KIIT Chess Festival B Below 1900 Rating Tournament 2024

Abhirup Saikia scored an unbeaten 9.5/10 to win 15th KIIT International Chess Festival Category B (Below 1900) Rating Tournament 2024. The 13-year-old from Assam finished a whopping 1.5 points ahead of the competition. Jagdish Barik, Piyush Kumar and Sathwik D S S U scored 8/10 each. They secured second, third and fourth place according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the festival was ₹6000000, ₹1500000 for Category B. The top three prizes were ₹100000, ₹75000 and ₹60000 along with a trophy each. The four-day ten-round Swiss league rating tournament was organized by and at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology in Bhubaneswar, Odisha from 2nd to 5th December. Andrey Esipenko clinches Qatar Masters 2024, Arjun Erigaisi second

GM Andrey Esipenko clinched Qatar Masters 2024 as he drew with the World no.4, GM Arjun Erigaisi in the final round. World no.6, GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) defeated GM Leon Luke Mendonca to finish with the same score as Arjun 7/9 each. Arjun secured second place due to better tie-break score, Abdusattorov was placed third. GM Karthikeyan Murali scored a win over GM Shamsiddin Vokhidov (UZB) to finish fifth. GM Pranesh M was victorious over IM Ayush Sharma to be placed tenth. The total prize fund of the tournament was US$ 108250, $94250 for Open A (≥2300) and $14400 for Open B (≤2299). Gukesh bests Ding Liren in Game 14 to become the youngest and 18th World Chess Champion

The 18-year-old lost the first game in his first World Championship Match. He was prepared for it, he knew it could happen. According to him, it was humiliating. No matter how much one prepares to be okay with a loss, it was quite tough to handle it. On his way back, in the lift, Vishy Anand told him, "I had 11 games, you have 13." It reminded him that it was just one game and it's a long match and he will get his chances. He showed mental toughness and fortitude, overcame all obstacles to etch his name in the record books. D Gukesh defeated Ding Liren in Game 14 to become the youngest World Chess Champion in history. The former World Champion blundered in the relatively balanced rook and bishop endgame. Gukesh realized it, took his time, drank some water, calmed himself down when he realized months of preparation, years of hardwork has finally come to fruition. He won the match with a 7.5-6.5 score. Arav Baid perfect at Birmingham Open 2024

Arav Baid scored a perfect 5/5 to win Birmingham Open 2024. He finished a full point ahead of the competition. After a Bye in the first round, Arav won the next four games including a win over the top seed and eventual second runner-up, CM Jan Murawski (ENG). John M Potter scored sole 4/5 to secure second place. He also remained undefeated. The total prize fund was £1500. The top three prizes in each of the four sections were £180, £120 and £60 respectively. The two-day five-round rating open tournament was organized by Warwickshire Chess Association at King Edward VI Five Ways School in Birmingham, England on 17th and 18th November 2024. Can Arjun Erigaisi beat Andrey Esipenko to win Qatar Masters 2024?

GM Andrey Esipenko defeated GM Shant Sargsyan (ARM) to gain sole lead 7/8 at Qatar Masters. Esipenko won a hard fought battle which resulted in a four-knights endgame. GM Arjun Erigaisi won against his compatriot, GM Karthikeyan Murali to maintain his pursuit. Arjun is trailing the sole leader Esipenko by a half point 6.5/8. He is in a must-win situation to become the champion, while a draw is enough for Esipenko to clinch the first place. More than the championship, the valuable FIDE Circuit points are also hanging in the balance. So Arjun would undoubtedly go for maximum. Round 9 starts today at 12 p.m. local time, 2:30 p.m. IST. D Gukesh got a good opportunity in the penultimate game of the FIDE World Championship 2024, presented by Google. However, he missed it. Will the miss prove costly? Only time will tell. The world champion mentioned that he was quite tired after a long game. However, he seemed quite energised answering the questions and analyzing various position. The challenger on the other hand was evidently disappointed, as this could probably end up being his last opportunity in the Classical games. History can still happen tomorrow or the day after. Diptayan Ghosh dominates Tata Steel Chess Festival 2024 Blitz Open

GM Diptayan Ghosh scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win Tata Steel Chess Festival 2024 All India Blitz Open. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. IM Mayank Chakraborty and FM Aditya Vikram Paul scored 8/9 each. They secured second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. Diptayan drew with Mayank and defeated Aditya. The one-day nine-round blitz open was organized by Dhanuka Dhunseri Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy at Dhono Dhanyo Auditorium in Kolkata, West Bengal on 17th November 2024.
