Abhirup Saikia dominates 15th KIIT Chess Festival B Below 1900 Rating Tournament 2024

Abhirup Saikia scored an unbeaten 9.5/10 to win 15th KIIT International Chess Festival Category B (Below 1900) Rating Tournament 2024. The 13-year-old from Assam finished a whopping 1.5 points ahead of the competition. Jagdish Barik, Piyush Kumar and Sathwik D S S U scored 8/10 each. They secured second, third and fourth place according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the festival was ₹6000000, ₹1500000 for Category B. The top three prizes were ₹100000, ₹75000 and ₹60000 along with a trophy each. The four-day ten-round Swiss league rating tournament was organized by and at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology in Bhubaneswar, Odisha from 2nd to 5th December. Abhirup finishes 1.5 points ahead of the rest

Abhirup Saikia was the sole leader 8.5/9, heading into the final round. He was a full point ahead of the pursuers - Mohit Kumar Soni, Himanshu Ranjan and Ranjith Pratap. Despite needing only a draw to become a clear champion, Abhirup went on to beat Ranjith in the final round to finish 1.5 points ahead of the field. Jagdish Barik defeated Mohit to secure second place. Piyush was victorious over Himanshu Ranjan to finish third. The reigning National Schools Under-13 Girls champion, Maitreyi Mondal scored an impressive 7.5/10 to be placed eighth. She is the only female finisher among top ten.

A total of 266 players from all over India and one each from Cyprus, Kenya and Nepal took part in Category B (<1900). The tournament was organized by KIIT University from 2nd to 5th December 2024 at KIIT University, Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The ten-round Swiss league tournament had a time control of 60 minutes + 30 seconds increment from move no.1.
