Boris Savchenko on the verge of winning 15th KIIT GM Open
GM Boris Savchenko defeated IM Kaustuv Kundu to increase his sole lead by a full point 8/9. He just needs a draw in the final round against GM Sayantan Das, to win 15th KIIT International Chess Festival Category A 2024. Savchenko's game seemed to be heading towards a draw when Kaustuv did not exchange his knight with his opponent's bishop at the right moment in the endgame. It ended up costing him the game. In a complex queen, rook and minor piece endgame, IM Kaustuv Kundu (2427) needed to exchange the minor pieces on the board 38...Nf4+ 39.Kg3 Nxe2+ 40.Qxe2 Qd7 and Black would have been fine. Instead, he blundered 39...Kg7?? and the bishop proved to be menacing 40.Bc4 Qxe7 41.dxe7 Re8 42.Rd7 b6 43.Rb5 and GM Boris Savchenko (2473) extended his sole lead by a full point.
