Diptayan Ghosh dominates Tata Steel Chess Festival 2024 Blitz Open
GM Diptayan Ghosh scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win Tata Steel Chess Festival 2024 All India Blitz Open. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. IM Mayank Chakraborty and FM Aditya Vikram Paul scored 8/9 each. They secured second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. Diptayan drew with Mayank and defeated Aditya. The one-day nine-round blitz open was organized by Dhanuka Dhunseri Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy at Dhono Dhanyo Auditorium in Kolkata, West Bengal on 17th November 2024. The total prize fund was ₹51000. Top three prizes were ₹15000 + trophy, ₹10000 and ₹5000 each respectively. This was Diptayan's sixth tournament triumph of the year. Photos: Shahid Ahmed

The reigning National Rapid and Blitz champion, GM Diptayan Ghosh scorched the field by scoring eight wins in-a-row. IM Mayank Chakraborty was the sole player trailing him by a half point. Diptayan drew with Mayank in the final round to become a clear champion, Mayank finished second. FM Aditya Vikram Paul defeated GM Deep Sengupta to finish third. WCM Arshiya Das scored 7/9 to become the sole female to make a top ten finish. She was placed tenth. The total number of main prizes were increased by five from 15 to 20 and Women's prize got an additional one more place due to the huge number of participation - 254.
Since 2022, one of the perks of winning the tournament is, receiving the prize on the final day of the main event - Tata Steel Chess India 2024 Rapid and Blitz. Apart from getting the prize from the legend and India's second GM in history - GM Dibyendu Barua, one gets to share the stage with another legend - Vishy Anand on the final day. Receiving the prize in front of star-studded world-class players is an added bonus apart from the usual cash and trophy prize. No wonder, every year, the festival events reach its capacity in no time once it is announced.

A total of 254 players including two GMs, four IMs and a WIM took part from various parts of the country in this one-day nine round Blitz Open tournament. It was organized by Dhanuka Dhunseri Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy at Dhono Dhanyo Auditorium in Kolkata, West Bengal on 17th November 2024. The time control of the event was 3 minutes + 2 seconds increment per move.
