Deep Sengupta wins Tata Steel Chess Festival 2024 Rapid Rating Open

by Shahid Ahmed - 06/12/2024

GM Deep Sengupta, GM Diptayan Ghosh and IM Mayank Chakraborty scored an unbeaten 8/9 each at the Tata Steel Chess Festival 2024 All India Rapid Rating Open. Deep won the tournament on tie-breaks, Diptayan and Mayank were placed second and third respectively. Deep drew with both runners-up. The top six finishers were only GMs and IMs. The two-day nine-round rapid rating open was organized by Dhanuka Dhunseri Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy at Dhono Dhanyo Auditorium in Kolkata, West Bengal on 16th and 17th November 2024. The total prize fund was ₹300000. Top three prizes were ₹50000 + trophy, ₹30000 and ₹20000 each respectively. This was Deep's fourth tournament triumph of the year. Photos: Shahid Ahmed

Top three score 8/9

The rapid rating open made a return after 2022. Last year, a Classical rating tournament took place instead, due to the longer duration of the main event. Due to the change in venue to Dhono Dhanyo Auditorium, more players could participate. Previously 150 used to be usual capacity, this year it was increased to 250. Total 282 players registered, out of them 277 turned up from over ten different states and units across the country. The reigning two-time Najdorf Memorial champion, GM Deep Sengupta won the tournament, his second event of the year in Kolkata. This was also the strongest rapid event to take place in the festival's history.

Champion - GM Deep Sengupta 8/9

Since 2022, one of the perks of winning the tournament is, receiving the prize on the final day of the main event - Tata Steel Chess India 2024 Rapid and Blitz. Apart from getting the prize from the legend and India's second GM in history - GM Dibyendu Barua, one gets to share the stage with another legend - Vishy Anand on the final day. Receiving the prize in front of star-studded world-class players is an added bonus apart from the usual cash and trophy prize. No wonder, every year, the festival events reach its capacity in no time once it is announced. Unfortunately, Agnivo missed that opportunity as he had a plan to play another tournament which was in a different city.
